Thanks dewalt-2, thats a very nice '47 you got too and looks like you done a great job! My '47 didnt have the scope & mount when I bought it but I lucked up and found a scope and mount still together and only payed $25.00 for them. It is VERY accurate!

I just got done putting the scope back on and noticed something I never saw before... the scope sits about 1/8" to the left of center of the barrel. I can't believe I never noticed it before in all these years. I've pulled it back off again and stashed it.
Since it's Christmas time and my wife keeps asking what I want I told her a peep for my old rifle. She blessed the purchase, so a Marbels tang is on it's way.
Funny how as you get older, and it's just the two of us, the giving comes early, and the surprises are little things under the tree.

For those that may not remember me (I've been gone a while) I'm an avid model 39 fan.
I have a 2002 39As that's fitted with a semi-custom Game Reaper scope mount and a Leupold VX1 3-9X40 that's had the parallax set at 50 yards for rimfire use.
I also have a 1950 39A that I bought in poor condition and cleaned up.
I should be posting here pretty regularly (The place where I was posting seems to have disappeared) and I hope to get to know some of you guys.
I have a 2002 39As that's fitted with a semi-custom Game Reaper scope mount and a Leupold VX1 3-9X40 that's had the parallax set at 50 yards for rimfire use.
I also have a 1950 39A that I bought in poor condition and cleaned up.
I should be posting here pretty regularly (The place where I was posting seems to have disappeared) and I hope to get to know some of you guys.

I feel a bit like I signed up for a great vacation deal... and just landed at an airport in some distant country where a battle had just been fought and the dust began to clear. I found this Marlin 39 thread, made some friendly posts to it... and then woke up a week later to find that, not only was the entire thread moved to a different website, but that all of my posts were vaporized!
I'm not really aware of the nature of this clash between the titans--nor do I really care. What I DO care about is the Marlin 39A , so I will start over and make some posts to this thread in it's new--or is it old?--location. I am obviously confused.

I "gave up" on the 1/2" wide (non-standard?) scope rail that came with my 1961 39A---and decided to go for something a bit easier to deal with.
I recently received a Nikon 4X32 rimfire scope, and am awaiting a Weaver #90 Base, a nice older pair of Weaver rings (low, detachable) I found on eBay, and a Grovtec hammer extension. I should be getting this together in the next week or so... and will be back with a report.

I think I tried the weaver base. It has notches cut in it for the rings to lock into, right?
That base will work, but I suspect that the steel base would be more rigid.
Before it went away over there, there was a pretty involved discussion about those scope bases.
Many people (maybe even most) are OK with the aluminum scope bases, but I found that they were too flexible to maintain a good zero when a full sized scope is mounted on them.
There is a long, weak, unsupported arm that rides out over the barrel, and it allows flex.
If you can find a way to use the steel base, I recommend it. I found what I feel to be the best solution, but it was pricey... more than most folks would feel good about spending on a scope mount.
These rifles are capable of fine accuracy, and will shoot nice small groups if the shooter does things right.
Having a rifle that shoots small groups isn't worth anything at all if the scope moves around on the rifle and puts the group in a different place all the time.

The old steel rail also had that unsupported area. While I have no real expertise in the relative merits of aluminum and steel alloys, I would hope that Weaver does. Success or failure is riding completely on those two little screws at the rear. I'm certainly going to use some LocTite and torque them properly. I would also think that a perfect metal to metal contact area is paramount.
I'm wondering if a little bit of something in that gap area might tend to dampen any possible vibration that could lead to loss of accuracy.
Anyway, it's nicely reassuring to know that you did that pioneering work with the DNZ folks---and that option remains open.

Jag, I respect your choice but it saddens me, I feel like we lost our star player. I can't look at a 3x5 card without smiling and thinking about you and the original and BEST ever 39 club match. Your membership in this club is foundational and helped set the stage for its success. Your absence will be felt.

I've been digging around in this thread. It looks like I jumped ship on page 56.

One of my biggest regret about the whole affair, Frank, is loss of your posts, especially the story about the custom scope mount saga. If I could pay money to have them archived here, I would. (At least Mo posted most of his in both places.)
But alas, life is but a Tibetan sand painting: when the wind blows, ya' just have to start over again.

I have some pics that were seen on the other forum, but not here.
This is Todd, a friend's son. We went out for a little training. He was going deer hunting with a scoped Winchester .30-30 and it was decided that a general shooting session with my scoped model 39 would be a good way to learn about handeling the rifle, dealing with the scope, and everything else.
He did just fine and had fun too.

This is Ken. He's the one that gets me in the woods. He wanted to take some squirrels but didn't have a .22 to use.
"No Problem" I said.
When I opened the gun case and showed him my 1950 Marlin 39A, he wasn't impressed. At all. Not even a little.
When I told him it was 60 years old, he acted like I was pawning off some P.O.S on him and keeping the nice stuff for myself.
He warmed up to it pretty quick.
After firing a few rounds and realizing it was reliable and accurate, he started having fun.
After blipping a turtle off a log at 100 plus yards, he started bragging on it.
I think he wants one now.

This is Alex, My Grandson.
Here he is on his first outing ever. He did pretty good for a first timer.
In my opinion, this is the model 39's best role... breaking in a new shooter.

As far as I know, this is the only one ever installed on a model 39. I had it designed for me, and bought the only one ever sold.
There is one other, still sitting at DNZ.
Notice the one piece base, the extra thick support for the front ring, and the beefy clamps for the scope body. This thing is solid as a rock. There's just no room for anything to shift or flex, and it doesn't.
It solved all my complaints and problems and improved this rifle tremendously.
Look how beefy this setup is!
And it NEVER shot this good before.(Five shot groups @ 25 yards)

This is how it looked in the beginning.
Same rifle- after.
I used a product called "Classic Cloth" to remove the rust. It's a cloth impregnated with some solvents and a very mild abrasive. it was easy, and it didn't take off the blue at all.
I used Birchwood Casey's cold blue on the scratches and wear spots.
I took the dents out of the wood with a hot iron and a wet rag, but that removed the oil from the wood.
I used Tru-Oil to re-oil the wood.
It looks pretty good now, and I'm happy.

I love it! it's a pure joy to shoot.
I kinda like the way it looks, too.

Great to see these again, Frank. So glad you've shared them in this house. Made me smile to read them (on a night when I'm having trouble sleeping ... it's after 3 am here).
Those are indeed a good sample of highlights (even if the story behind the scope mount is much, much longer, but that conveys the gist of it).
