What can one man and a pistol do?

This thread makes me look like such a pessimist. FP-45 was an idea that flopped in real life. And Francesco Possenti never pulled off that cinematic pistolier scene. So to answer the question, I guess one man and a pistol can be the basis of a good story perhaps.
 
He can teach others to shoot, thereby creating a new generation of shooters who hopefull will not have to rely on someone else for protection.
 
To be technical, it may have occurred but it is highly unlikely. It is only mentioned in one biographical account of the Saint and the author of the piece admitted to embellishing some stories and even making some up. It is generally agreed that this was one of the made up ones since nobody else ever mentions this feat (surely several more would make mention of such a fantastic event) coupled with the fact that when this supposedly occurred the Saint was near death from tuberculosis and in no condition to go running around pistol fighting.
 
I fully understand the purpose of the (excellent) discussion around the "Liberator", but just for interest's sake I was under the impression there was no documented use of it against an enemy combatant...is that true?

From what I know, that is pretty much it. I could be wrong but I don't believe there was any documented use in Europe and it made an insignificant impact in China and the Philippines with resistance groups there. Then again it wasn't designed for use there. Japanese occupation was a little different than German occupation in Western Europe where the piece was designed to work in theory.
 
i did a search and most of the results were stories of men being killed while attempting to use a pistol to stop the enemy.as stated earlier,the best use of a pistol is to use it to get a rifle.i came across a story of a guy with a 1911 that took out 6 men,and a guy with a 9mm that got 9 or something along them lines but i can't find it again.it was the record.

Any dedicated man in the right state of mind, with proper knowledge/training and enough motivation can either preserve the lives of many people or unleash all kinds of havoc. Of course the type of pistol/ammunition also plays a BIG role in your scenario.
 
Wasn't there a Romanian Olympic pistol shooter who took out a LOT of government thugs using his match gun their Revolution? Help me out here, folks.
 
Against one adversary one man has a chance to win.

Against two adversaries pick the one to drop and then prepare to be shot!

Against three or more adversaries, run like hell!

Against a gang one man is bad straits, that is why police call back-up! One lone HCP carrying civilian on a street at night has no such option. Run, hide, call police, shoot only if somebody just gets too darn close.

All those fancy drills at the training schools do not have targets actually shooting at you with intent to kill. You best weapons in anything more than one on one are your head and feet . Use them!

Flash! Rambo is not real , he is really a rather short middle aged movie actor and the s--- he is doing doesn't happen in real life. A gun doesn't make you superman and awareness is worth far more than hollowpoints. The gun is for when you can't run fast enough or far enough.

Where I originally came from, this IPSC competitor became the target of a kidnapping for ransom gang. Kidnappers then more often than not, murdered their victims even after being paid ransom.

So one afternoon as he was driving into his garage, a carload of would-be kidnappers met him with guns drawn. The intended victim fortunately carried his compensated 1911 racegun cocked, locked and within arm's reach.

Within seconds, 4 thugs were down. Our hero survived with nary a scratch.
His awareness, presence of mind and condition one mindset plus his skill saved the day. And yes I think he was superman and rambo rolled in one!
 
The IPSC guys are a rare breed,myself I could practice from now till doomsday and I would never be that fast or accurate.
