What is the Ultimate Deer Rifle?

The one rifle that you can shoot well and trust . Back in the days when people have to save a year's pay to get that particular gun. The only gun in the house that they depended on for self defense and hunt with.

A good all around deer rifle or centerfire for anything, would be a .308 or 30-06, bolt action, with a 1-4 scope. Lesser calibers may work well but why use a lesser round when you can have a flat shooting rig that will kill a deer at any reasonable range and angle? Slower rounds may need adjustment for range, smaller rounds may not fully penetrate from any angle, and I like wounds on both sides. That said, for less recoil a smaller round will do the job. You have to consider more possiblities with your shot. More so the slow rounds. If you prefer a different action, sights or centerfire round that's not wrong. I've killed deer with several different weapons from .357, shotgun, .223, 30-30, 7.62 x 39, &mm, 30-06 and more. They all work, how many limitations do you want.

Life's too short to read 79 opinions. As someone who does not yet own a deer rifle, could someone kindly summarize this thread?:)

I will attempt! There are several great deer cartridges. There are several wonderful configurations of rifles that fire these cartridges. Pick a cartridge/rifle combo that best suits you. Body geometry, skill level, personal tastes, and opinion all come into play. The most important characteristic of a great deer rifle is the level of confidence that you have in it.

Let me try.

The ultimate deer rifle is a 7mm Ultra Mag semi-auto with a 28" bull barrel and topped with a 2x26 power Nightforce scope that shoots one hole groups at 400 yards. It is 30" long, weighs under 7lb and has the recoil and muzzle blast of a 22LR. It has a switch barrel setup that can be done without tools and keeps it's zero. The whole package sells for $200 each and I just happen to have a few hundred for sale, PM me for the PO box # in Nigeria to send your checks to.

Some people hunt big mulies at long range and some people hunt Coes, Blacktail or Southern Whitetail where 100 yards is a long shot. Some don't notice recoil and some do. Mine will of course work well in both scenarios unlike your American rifles.

I don't have any idea what the ultimate is. I have been using a Winchester model 70 Ranger (the cheapest model Winchester made when I bought it in '89) in .30-06 for years. This rifle is one of the push feed versions of the model 70 that many folks don't like. It has worn an old Tasco World Class 3x9x44 scope since the late 90's. It has never failed me.

I have a neighbor that swears that his model 70 in 7mm mag that has a $600 Bushnell scope on it is the ultimate though. Says it keeps him from having to look for deer. From what I can tell my deer are just as dead as his are & don't travel any farther after being shot than his. I also used to know a guy that loved using a .243.

Abel nailed it find what works for you & go with it.
