What is the Ultimate Deer Rifle?

There is no "ultimate deer rifle". Nada. Zip. Keep searching, won't find it.

There are hundreds of rifles which will do merely the same thing, however. That being, kill a deer at 300 yards.

Ultimate it subjective....

my preference is my Ruger 77 MKII international 30-06.

all the power i need for anything out to 350 yards, accurate, and with the 18 inch barrel, compact!

......plus it is just friggin beautiful to look at.

i have a .243 wssm, that thing shoots flat and fast, about 3800 fps with a 100 grain SST. that has plenty of punch to take out a deer, but if you want to migrate to something larger to take out bigger game, i recommend a 300 win mag or a .338. lapua, winchester, others make .338s. those things are nice. plenty of punch if you decide to take on elk, moose, grizzly, etc. the U.S. marines are partial to the 300 win mag, and are testing the .338 lapua as the next long range, mid caliber sniper cartridge.

The biggest caliber you can shoot TOTALLY FLINCH FREE.

I shoot .458 Lott, 500 gr. solids flinch free. It's too big for deer.

"Deer rifle" is like shoes. Some days you need to dance in them. Some days you need to muck out the stables. Pays to have options in footwear . . .

Used to use my self-sporterized Springfield .30-06, Redfield 3 x 9 x 40 scope, Winchester 150-gr Silvertips for deer.

Tried out a Kimber-sporterized 6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser, which came with a cheap Silver Antler 3 x 9 x 40 scope, 140-gr soft noses...and have never used the Springfield since for deer! Incredible accuracy to 300-yds...which is the fartherest I've taken shots...all one-shot kills. They just spread their legs and fall down. I handload Nosler Accubond bullets.

Will go Canadian elk hunting this fall with the Springfield and 180-gr Nosler Partition PP or Barnes Triple-Shock bullets.

Lots of good choices depending upon the terrain, cover, hunting method etc. Out of a blind or high hunting stand a good bolt (Ruger, Remmington, Tikka, Savage, etc) in .308, .243, .270 or 30-06 are hard to beat. For stalking, driving, and moving around a small lever gun like the Winny 94, or Marlin 336 in 30-30 are real good, especially with the new Leverevolution ammo! A real good either/or gun is the BLR in .308 or .243. Gives you real nice quick handling almost as good as the smaller Winny/Marlin, plus the added range and accuracy of the bolt gun and the pointy bullets!

i'd say a rem 700 or savage Model 10GXP3 in 7-08 rem, a (insert brand) 4-12x40 scope. or simular. lower recoil than 308 or .270, still plenty good for what you want. for ammo... if you have the money, hornadys interlock or SST ammo works pretty well, remington coreloct, swift Scirocco, the list never ends (almost)

My favorite is the Model 700 BDL in 270 win. Ultimate? Who knows? But, I'd buy another if I lost it.

Well let's face facts. The CZ 550 Ultimate Hunting Rifle, I don't have any experience with it but clearly that answers your question

If the safety on the 550 is azzbackwards, like it is on the CZ RF's, then it's far from the "ultimate" to me.

That there is a 336C from 1971 with a Ramline stock and a Nikon 2-7x32mm. She shoots Hornady LE 160 FTX 30-30. Out to 200 yards is no problem.

I know of a west Tx hunter, he uses a Krag jorgensen 30 40 and has bagged many deers with since childhood. And this is with open sights. One time he gave me a link of venison sausage and it was the tastiest ive tried.

I've shot a lot of deer and a bolt action 30-06 is as good as it gets with a 150 or 165 grain bullet for knock um down 1 shot kills. A Leupold variable scope 3.5 to 10X works good. Make sure the scope is not set too far forward so you have instant view of the target with heavy clothing. A recoil pad like the Pachmayr F-325 is a must. Make sure your stock is short enough to use with heavy clothing because there's nothing worse than a stock that is too long. BW

The rifle your most at home with and can shoot accurately. For me that is a Remington 798 in 300 wm with a Nikon Monarch scope.;)

Let me just settle this now. As you can plainly see this is of course the ultimate deer rifle. 6.8 SPC of course. 120 grain SST hand loads running at 2550 fps out of an 18 inch bbl. ATC AR Gold trigger 2x7 Redfield in Leupold QD rings. Etc, etc.

Well I can't get the pic to show up. Poooo!

What does that quarter look like at the 300 yard mark? Yes, I'm being a smarta$$

Depends on the deer? Coastal deer run small (~100 lbs) so a 243 or 6.5mm is fine. TX and AZ can get bigger by a bunch, so I'd be stepping on the caliber a bit.

All around, I'd say 308 :)

I got my first rifle in 1949. Over the years I have used single shot , pump, semiauto, lever, and bolt action rifles with 4X,6X,2.5-8X,3-9X, 4-12X power scopes. Seven different types of cartridges were used to take deer. My closest shot was at about 35 Yds and the longest about 375 Yds. How should I know what the Ultimate Deer Rifle is, its unlikley that my old body will last so I can try all the other good deer cartridges that I have not used.
