A good all around deer rifle or centerfire for anything, would be a .308 or 30-06, bolt action, with a 1-4 scope. Lesser calibers may work well but why use a lesser round when you can have a flat shooting rig that will kill a deer at any reasonable range and angle? Slower rounds may need adjustment for range, smaller rounds may not fully penetrate from any angle, and I like wounds on both sides. That said, for less recoil a smaller round will do the job. You have to consider more possiblities with your shot. More so the slow rounds. If you prefer a different action, sights or centerfire round that's not wrong. I've killed deer with several different weapons from .357, shotgun, .223, 30-30, 7.62 x 39, &mm, 30-06 and more. They all work, how many limitations do you want.
