What would he carry?

HK P7M8. Small, accurate, high end, reliable, somewhat exotic. Sounds like the perfect choice for a Bondish type character, without becoming Bond.

One of the Sigs would be the other choice, with a Makarov (good pick Vern) as another option.

For a large gun, I suggest a Coonan Cadet .357 automag. For a small gun, an SP101 357 mag modified to 10mm (which you can also shoot 40 S&W out of).

Interesting!

You would choose a Pistol shooting a revolver cartridge, and a Revolver shooting a Pistol cartridge.

The Coonan pistols shot the the 357Magnum. Not the 357 Automag.

Go figure.

The selection of a weapon is not only a highly personal decision, but can also change depending on circumstance. Without knowing a lot more about the character and what situations he's facing, it's difficult to make any kind of selection. Having said that, I would tend to go with a slightly customized version of one of the more commonly available autoloaders, or something that is a veritable classic. Otherwise, make up an experimental custom model from one of the higher quality mfg's.

How about something like a CZ P-01, which is a relatively new model, but built in stainless or with a Tenifer or like finish, and chambered in .40 S&W (none of which are offered by CZ)? Or a Beretta Cougar Inox? A Glock with a custom made steel frame (or a Kahr K-series)?

On the classic side, you could go with a custom shorty 1911-based design, maybe in an unusual caliber. The Walther PPK, or something as pretty as a SIG-Sauer P232, would never be out of place at a formal event.

The last route to consider is something completely generic that would be so widely available that tracing it's origin would be difficult. Any of the more popular modern autoloaders would do.

Mauser HSc if it's to be a new gun, Sig 232 if you want the modern version. Very small, classy gun.

If silence is golden, a (old fashioned) silenced Nagant Revolver (about the only revolver that can be successfully suppressed) or the OTS-38 - a Russian j-frame-sized gun firing integrally suppressed ammunition. Laser's mounted on the side, it's fed with moonclips, and it does have a safety.*

*N.B. European revolvers are all weird. They start out strange but recognizable in England, and go completely berserk by the time you hit Belarus.

The Baby Browning is a must for BUG. Classy in the extreme.

For an alternate idea - a Mauser 712 with a supressor. Has the capability for FA fire if the situation dictates, runs with 10rd or 20rd detachable mags, has a shoulder stock for more accurate fire... or maybe I'll write my own book.

I'm going to say the Beretta Bobcat Inox. It's got a cool name... and it's small and silver. It's built from exotic metals. But when you see it, you know it's built to kill. Quickly.

Someone said Walther P99 on page one - I say NO, just for fear of the author being accused of "ripping off" James Bond. (FWIW, Bond carries the P99 in the books AND movies now).

To say anything MORE helpful, requires sleep. *My* 'dream guns' have problems - ASP was also used by Bond, and a Titanium Gold Desert Eagle is not a practical carry gun! ;)

Colt 1903 if american
Sig 232 if German
Walther PPk if Brit

if the gun is disposable ( IE field expediant) pick something underdog. webley revolver for instance

if the gun is a grab take something german. people like to think bad guys use german handguns and russian rifles

Mateba Unica 6.. Semi Auto Revolver.. it is Italian and very euro cool...

And big and with issues that make it a less than ideal carry gun. The Unica 6 in 357 is bigger than a S&W N frame in several dimensions, so thing guy better be big.

Here's mine:

Might be a tad bit Bondish but I would say the new walther PPS nice and slim tuxedo gun for everyday carry.

How 'bout for close up work he has a Bearcat modified with an exotic cylinder, frame and barrel to handle 5 rounds of .32Mag in a DA mode????

I know, it's really late for me to be up.

I like the H&K P7M8, or the SIG 232. Both fit the bill for your spy: concealable, elegant, classy, yet perfectly practical at the same time.

I have an idea. If you don't know the difference between "waved" and "waived" then you should not be critically appraising a writer's works.

hes a technical advisor. not an editor. he barely has to speak english so a miss spelt word here or there is her problem not his.

Hk P7M8, safe reliable gun, that is exotic enough to appeal to the fan boys.

Someting with a bit of 'flash' rather than the usual 1911

Ouch! that hurts. A gold plated Kimber compact would be kinda flashy? But then again... a spy really isn't really supposed to use flashy type stuff right? For something unique, how about an air cooled belt fed blowgun with an Acog. It could shoot poison tipped ice darts that melt in the body. Out of all the spy weapons out there none beats Max Smart's judo chop!!!
