Hey guys so if you were offered a pre 64 model 70 Winchester best grade available in 30 06 or a best grade early Remington 700 custom BDL also in 30 06 what do you pick and why?

Model 70 for me. I have several M70's and Remington 700's in various calibers. I can't say why, but I just like the M70's better.

the pre-64 hands down. the only thing that comes close is the 40xb.

I'd be happy to get either, but given the choice I'd pick the Winchester. No objective reason, I just like them better.

The Winchester has an action almost 3 times stiffer than the Remington, better safety, ease of maintenance and reliability, resists twisting in bedding better and clearly out performed the Remington 7XX actions in 50 years of high power match rifle competition.

Their pre-'64 factory barrels were there only weak point; wide range of accuracy as they were broach rifled and those made with a new broach had groove diameters a bit too big for best accuracy. Tight bores made at the end of the broach's life were pretty good. If you can slug the bore and it measures .3082" or less, it's a good one. Some I've measured are .3085" or more; one reason why Western Cartridge Company make 30 caliber match bullets .3088" diameter so they would shoot very accurate in such barrels.

You and me both. And changing the safety so it DOESN'T lock down the bolt is no solution.

You can buy an after-market 3-position safety for the Remington 700 -- but I'm not going to shell out extra money for something the manufacturer should provide.

Sorry, but I definitely prefer the 700 with all the perceived safety problems. I've had mine since 1972 and have since shot Mule deer, Whitetails, and even an elk. Never had a problem with the safety in all those years. Incidentally mine is the 700 BDL Custom Deluxe in .270 caliber.

I know this will be sacrilege to some, but I'd rather have a high grade model 70 so I could sell it to some of you pre 64 model 70 nuts and use the money to fund something more interesting. Model 70 just for the horse trading potential.

Model 70, hands down. Not that I have anything against the Remington but the model 70 is a significant step up.

I have a M70 in '06 and one in 300 WSM, also an older 700 in 243 and a Remington 788 in 22-250.

But I have a W.A. Sukalle custom with a Fabrique National Mauser action in '06 that's just plain nice.....I just have a soft spot for Mauser actions. :)

I picked "blank" because I'd rather have a Remington Model 725 over either of the other two options. My second choice would be the pre-64 Model 70.

I went with the Remington and my reasoning is simple. I still have all my tools and fixtures for working on Remington actions. If I want to accurize a Remington action or true it up I already have the tools. That is about my only reason for making the choice I made.

I chose the model 70 because... All of the above seem like good reasons, but honestly, I think it is the O'Connor (whom I have never read) factor in my case, good reputation. I have never handled either. Maybe I would actually prefer shooting the Remington, who knows?

Honestly either are fine. But in my family it's always been Remington. Oh, and for me personally, Winchester doesn't now, nor to my knowledge have they ever, made a left handed version.

Interesting question. I have a pre 64 M70 30-06, and a couple newer 700 BDLs. What were the distinguishing characteristics of the older BDLs?

Having handled examples of the pre-'64 Model 70, and older Model 700's I'd pick the pre-'64. Not even a contest, the workmanship on the Winchester is just better, a lot better. Even if it needed a new barrel to get the best accuracy out of it. Hell as long as the action and stock weren't in bad shape I could forgive a pre-'64 if the barrel were toasted completely.

remingtons new stuff has been crap lately, so an older, better made one i may find more value in than the new stuff theyre putting out, the same could probably be said for winchester as well, if i had to pick one of the two id probably take the winchester
