Why dosen't the .30-30 get any respect?

again the original topic is not whether or not it is better or worse in it's capable range. it was why do people hate on this legendary cartridge..
Just my .02
Maybe it's because of the "newer is better" herd mentality, combined with enough disposable income to be able to play around. I personally love the loadings that have stood the test of time. 45/70, 30/30, 30/06, they haven't been around for more than a hundred years because they are inadequate. I own them all, along with a few more modern loadings as well, 7mm Rem.Mag., 7mm08, I like them all. But if I had to trim it down to just a couple, the "old guy's" would win hands down. And my "brush gun" would most likely be my 30/30.

There's an old saying "One can beat a dead horse but it's still a dead horse". The .30-.30 is an effective round within it's limitations and the limitations of those that use it. Nobody is claiming the .30-.30 is the best, just that it is utilitarian. Levers and bolts each have their place. SO we should agree to disagree and move on instead of picking apart every comment made. This is THR and let's keep it as such.

I direct this at no single post/poster and am grateful this forum exists because it's members, like their knowledge, are invaluable when it comes to information located in one online forum. I'm not a moderator and haven't ever even played one  on TV.

Quote from natman: "All of them. The greater variance in point of aim caused by shooting offhand is added to mechanical variance, it doesn't cover it up. In other words, if you can hold your point of aim to within, say, 6 MOA shooting offhand and your rifle shoots 2 MOA, then your groups will be 8 MOA."

I beg to differ. The combination of the two distributions represented by the 6 moa from offhand and the 2 moa from your rifle, do not add together in the normal sense. For practical purposes, these can be treated as independent distributions, so the root-sum-square technique gives us the combined moa:

In spreadsheet terms: combined moa = sqrt(6^2 + 2^2) = sqrt(36 + 4) = sqrt(40)

My sheet gives 6.3 moa for the offhand shot with a 2 moa rifle.

Most of us use 3 or 5 shot groups to check accuracy. I can assure you that this difference is so small that you would conclude the lever is more accurate almost half the time!
