I am about three-quarters of the way through the first of THR member Larry Correia's Monster Hunters International (MHI) series of books and loving it. For those that don't know it, the premise is basically that all those fictional movie monsters do in fact exist and there are folks that get paid to hunt them.

At one point, one of the main characters explains that since silver bullets are so expensive, they only have them made in three standard calibers--.45 ACP for pistols and SMGs, .308 Winchester/7.62mm NATO for rifles and 12 gauge buckshot for shotguns.

With those calibers set in stone--really, those are your only options--what guns would you choose for your MHI four-gun set?

1. .45 ACP pistol
2. .45 ACP SMG or carbine
3. .308 rifle
4. 12 gauge shotgun

If you are motivated, you might choose two sets. One set for everyday carry, briefcase, trunk of car, etc. so concealability and light weight are important. The other set for when you are loaded for bear and heading into the vampire's den in full-on combat mode. Or some combination of the two.

Cheers,

Matthew

I'd say you want 5. Two pistols, one for EDC and one for your combat rig.
I'm going with Glock G30 and G21, Mossberg for the shotgun. I really don't know much about about the other two. While I've shot full auto Uzis and MP5s those are the only subguns I've actually shot. I'll say a Kris Vector because of what I've read about the lack of recoil and I can use the same magazines in my Glocks. .308 rifle, again I'm pretty ignorant, so from what I've read, a SCAR.

FWIW, they didn't say it's .45 ACP and .308 Win, they said it's .45 and .308 bullets--they would load them into other cartridges, but didn't want to pay to have other projectiles made. Thus things like Sam's .45-70's.

:)

That said, I'd be using things the characters already did.

a CZ85 or XD pistol
a UMP (I don't know many other .45 SMG's, and the Thompson is heavy!)
An AR10 or VEPR
and a Mossberg 500, but I'm not picky on shotguns.

I might change those last two for a SCAR and a Saiga.

And that's assuming MHI and not the Fed's MCB, with their 10mm and 5.56x45. :D [/geek]

for the .45s hunting monsters, I'd go with a pair of double action double stacked 1911 clone akimbo style.

SMG, I'd bring it old school with a Thompson.

.308, I'd go with a Rem 700. Keep it classic.

and the 12 gauge, since we're playing pretend and all, I'm grabbing an AA-12.

Since it's a fictional universe, I'll go for the sexy.

1. FN FNP .45
2. H&K UMP (but they still hate me)
3. FN SCAR-H
4. AA-12

окау, I'll play too

as said above, 2 pistols (Owen style ;)
say, Colt Combat Commander with 8-rd Wilson mags as EDC/CC + ParaOrd P14.45 as a holster duty gun
rifles... tuned and de-bugged Kel-tec RFB. Short gun, relatively long barrel. Plus QD sound moderator and good sights, i.e. EOTech + 3X magnifier of QD mount
Shotgun... pimped-up Vepr-12 with 42cm/17" barrel. I mean, better shoulder stock (factory one sucs in ergonomics, at least in my opinion), good red-dot (EOTech will do), good flashlight, forward grip, Abomination-style silver-coated flip-up bayonet

;)

You're absolutely right, I stand corrected. Others correct if I'm wrong (I know next to nothing about reloading) but I think that would add .45 Long Colt as a handgun option not to mention a mare's leg version of a .45-70 Marlin Guide Gun. What would that do for rifle options?

Great books for fans of guns! If I'm fighting back the zombie hordes (literally!) I think these would be my choices.

  1. .45 ACP pistol - Glock 21 & Glock 30 (I know the author and main characters are all 1911 fans, but I prefer my Glocks.)
  2. .45 ACP SMG or carbine - HK UMP 45 (Never actually shot one, but damn they look cool).
  3. .308 rifle - SCAR 17 (FN FAL is cool, but I like the SCAR better)
  4. 12 gauge shotgun - Saiga 12 (who has time to load a standard shotgun round by round, when the zombies are pouring through the door!)

i think he should switch from .45 to 9mm ;) a lot less silver to pay for :D

OK, here are mine...

Everyday and/or concealed carry

1. Kahr P45 (black, night sights, belt holster) and Kahr PM45 (same options, ankle holster), 7-round TP-45 mags for reloads. Small guns, but I have small hands
2. KRISS Super V Vector SMG
3. Serbu Super Shorty 12 gauge
4. Springfield Armory SOCOM 16 (in the trunk of the car)

And when SHTF

1. Same pistols
2. H&K UMP SMG
3. Mossberg 590A1 12 gauge with bayonet
4. FN SCAR-H CQC (or FN MINIMI 7.62 T.R. Sliding Butt when you need solutions that come in belts, not magazines)

Or if feeling very old school

1. GI Colt 1911 or S&W M1917 revolver
2. Thompson M1A1 or M3A1 Grease Gun
3. Winchester M1897 Trench Gun
4. Indian Ishapore Lee Enfield 2-A1 (or a Bren L4A1 in 7.62 NATO)

I can't believe no one wants there own abomination.

I'd go
1. a pair of XDM's in 45.
2. UMP 45
3. LWRC AR in .308
4. My own abomintation. lol

I lost suspension of disbelief when 9mm and 5.56 were not included in the list. The popularity of those two calibers demands they be included, especially when cost is a factor

1. 1911
2. UMP wouldn't be against a Thompson though.
3. Crusader Broadsword .308
4. 870

Sorry, not according to the book. Presumably the larger calibers were choses because evil monster killing demans more oomph than 9mm or .556mm can deliver. YMMV. ;)

Mr. Correia figured that all out. It's not that they're buying silver bullets themselves--they're constructed like CorBon Pow'r'Ball. A JHP with a silver ball pressed into the nose. The thought being that it otherwise works like a JHP (you don't need silver for zombies or chupacabra, but it's fun!) with "just enough silver to cause some damage."

I figure they went .45 instead of 9mm because it can hold a larger ball, it was what they had when they started doing that probably in the early autoloader years and, however much I like it for people, I wouldn't trust 9mm against a yeti.

Then again, I wouldn't want a lever-action, either. :)

I'm not sure they'd be limited to 12 gauge shotguns, either, but they do mention that they use 00 or 000 magnum, and that would give a decent payload. The slugs would still be stuck for what they have made.

And the Federal Monster Control Bureau does use .223 (or at least AR's, IIRC. And the French team has their Famas) and 10mm Glocks (Franks does. The others may have .40 available.)

[/nerd] :D

I just had a thought. If it's .30 cal bullets, not just .308 Win, then I want to cross the fictional dimensional barrier into the Grimnoir-verse and get the bullpup BAR made for Jake "Heavy" Sullivan.

Yeah but the Feds use a sintered/frangible silver/lead combo that isn't available to the private joes like MHI. A Fed anti-monster 9mm probably has more overall silver than an MHI silver Pow-R-Ball .45 ACP.

You could load any variation of .45 bullets, even GAP.

I'm as big a 9mm fan as anyone, its what I carry, but when your standing at the gates of hell with unspeakable horror from beyond staring you in the face with the intent of unmentionable indignities I can see the point of maybe having more gun.

:DI'll play:

matched set of Springfield 1st gen Operators in 460 Rowland
1928 Thompson chambered the same, gotta love 50rd drums.
870 borderpatrol model

Mustn't forget the WWIII Kukri and Ryan combat hawk.

Other variations in mind just don't have the time to type. Gotta cast more silver
Cheers,

ts

Just finished reading the third book of the series "Alpha", basically an adventure for Earl Harbinger. All three books have been a great read!

Put me down for:

1) Pair of 5" 1911 pistols backed up with beau coup 8 and 10 round magazines
2) Bushmaster's new 16" rifle in 7.62x51mm
3) Remington M870 12" with pistol grip stock/pump
or
3) a MAC-10 in .45acp, 1200 rpm of silver slinging psuedo chain gun. ;)

And I'll take a silver inlayed double bitted battle axe as icing on the cake please.
