Have you ever had a gun you don't know what to do with?

No.

Before I buy a gun, I make sure I have a reason for the purchase and I carefully research what it is that will meet my needs (or my wants, as the case may be) so that when I make the purchase, it is something I have reflected upon for months, maybe even years, before actually spending money on.

That said, I have bought a gun that didn't prove to be what I expected it to be. The particular example that comes to mind is a Charter Arms AR-7. I wanted a gun for the boat that would float if dropped in the water. I didn't have a chance to shoot one before I bought it and was very disappointed with the clunky trigger. I sold it to a friend but later bought it back from him and gave it to my fiance (before she became my wife) and she used it to defend her apartment against a home invader so it became "her" gun after that.

I think everybody's had a gun or seven
they didn't know what to do with,
at one point or another. I've got a handful,
as we speak. And boy, are they ever a
handful. Ones a jammomatic I'm finessing,
that should only tie up 3 years of my spare time.
I've got a couple Garand types giving me
accuracy headaches. I could go on and on, but
I imagine most of us here know the all to familiar
drill, get it dependable and accurate, or get it gone.

If I have guns I don't know what to do with, I sell them.

It seems that the OP's problem is that he bought a nice gun - a CZ P01 - then immediately invested money in it (several hundred $) to make it nicer. That immediate investment means he likely can't sell the gun without taking a big loss. Or at the very least, he'll have to hunt a pretty long time to find a buyer...a buyer who wants exactly the same mods he had made. Let's face it - $600 or $700 guns are a lot more liquid than $1100 guns. A quick browse of gunbroker verifies this.

I never invest money like that in a gun, let alone one that isn't broken. If he was shooting competitively with it, it would be ok, but it sounds like he isn't. I have a few guns over $500, but not many. I like them as collector pieces or because they serve a meaningful purpose that no other gun I have does.

The only guns I've bought that have vacated my possession...were bought for my sons and they took them when they got their own homes.( imagine that ! ). All the guns in my safe are shot...well except that one bolt action shotgun. I like to shoot so if it goes bang it goes to the range once in a while.

I can't help you with your problem. I'm in the "keep it/shoot it" camp! You'll love it. Its a gun. Treat it nice, but, shoot it!

I look at a gun with no holster or training wear, and my first thought is "junk".

If the pistol was good, it would be used. Use your CZ, it's NOT too good to be carried.

I think you have hit the conceptual problem that is at work here squarely on the head. Unless someone is a serious collector, a gun is a tool, not an investment. Like a circular saw or surveyor's transit, a gun was bought for a particular purpose (target shooting, self-defense, etc.) and it should be used for that purpose regardless of how much it cost.

So.... Pro Package, Night Sights, "trigger is amazing", sights are nice and bright, "Happy as a clam" but you don't want to carry the gun? You built a carry gun and don't carry it? Oh please, just carry your nice carry gun and be happy.

What are you now carrying?

Not carrying it because "It's too pretty" is the same as the guys who buy a car they have always wanted, and then never drive it in the rain, etc. It sits there half the year or more, and that alone isn't good for it, and it depreciates every year and then when they get to the old geezer stage and sell it, it's not old enough to be a "classic", so they get a decent, but not great price for it, and they're mad at themselves for not driving it daily and actually enjoying it.

Early last year I sold a Glock and decided I was going to replace it with something nice. Really nice. Ended up buying a CZ P-01 from Cajun Gun Works and had them work their magic on it with their Pro Package, along with a set of night sights.

Congrats. Good decision. :)

It's too nice to carry, and it's not something I want to keep in my glove box for fear of it getting stolen. (I got another Glock for that!) It's really not a target pistol either, so pretty much it just sits in my safe collecting dust.

A home defense and range gun, then. Enjoy shooting that CZ!

One of the few guns I sold was too pretty to use. Sat in the safe. Didn't want to scratch the stock.

If I had it and went through the trouble and expense to customize it you better believe I would shoot it. And shoot it a lot. Why do all that work and save it for someone else to enjoy?

Have you ever had a gun you don't know what to do with?

No.

I have always been able to figure out how the bullets go in and where they come out.

I have a stock cz p-01, and straight outta the factory they are too nice to carry, but you know it hasn't stopped me... Honestly, over it's life you will spend more in ammo than the cost of the gun. CZ makes amazing firearms, go burn 300 rounds through it this weekend and carry it all week. The new wears off quick and then you just enjoy your quality pistol...
Btw, i just went through this with my switch from the p-01 to the cz 97b. Now in that case weight and size come into play, but the 45 felt so good.... Enjoy your p-01, there meant to be used...

All together it came out to about $1100 if I remember right.

Carry and enjoy. If it becomes too dinged up for your taste in the future, have it refinished.

I have 2. One a cheap and I mean cheap 38 revolver that's in pieces. I can't even figure out what brand it is, but it is old since my Dad gave it to me. He gave me another one too, a Sharps .32 4bbl derringer that dates to the 1860's I think. I don't mind keeping the Sharps and I could always sell it but the .38 is probably destined for a buyback somewhere. It is truly worthless.

I know what to do with every gun I own. But some I don't shoot because they are collectibles. Some I don't shoot because I never get around to it. This is not a big problem for me. As far as your gun goes, shoot it if you want to. Carry it if you want to or carry something else. No big thing. I wouldn't sell unless you need to.

While all this discussion is great, how many of you have thought that If you Actually have to use your high dollar baby of a pistol how it will be handled by the police in the evidence room. Will they etch an evidence number in it? When will or will you ever get it back? That's why my primary carry is a $400 pistol.

My life is worth more than my high dollar carry gun (when I carry my Wesson) and a gun can be replaced. My life or that of my wife and child cannot.

At the end of the day a gun is just a tool.

Well you can sell it or shoot it. OR...I have a Python that I shoot very rarely, too pretty, too perfect. You can also own things just for pride of ownership or beauty. No rule to why you have to own anything.
