For sometime I’ve wanted to explain why we all need to fight for the AR-15, we need to really fight the anti’s on the stigma they have assigned to the AR. I’ll ask everyone to please read the entire post, and I ask specifically because I think I’m going to tick off almost everyone at some point but I have a reason for doing so.

First I will say, I don’t really like the AR-15. I have owned three, sold two of them and the third sits in my safe and has probably been shot less than 50 times. It’s just not my cup of tea, many of the things others like about it are why I don’t like it..
Low recoil, I’m grown and I like to know when it fires.
It’s Light, that’s right I feel like a child playing with a $10 China made toy and I like real guns not toys.
The caliber just sucks for anything I use a gun for, if all .223 ceased to exist I would sleep just fine tonight.
It’s versatile, true its the jack of all trades, but the master of none. Every time I need a rifle for something The AR always stays in the safe because their is always a better option for the situation.
Their are only 2 reasons I own one, the main reason is because it’s a bit of a statement simply to own an AR-15 in this day an age, the other reason is simply because I get tired of explaining to coworkers who see me as “the gun guy” why I don’t own one, this is rural Alabama everybody owns one. Nevertheless, It is my opinion that the AR-15 is quiet simply the most overrated gun ever manufactured.

Now, I had a reason for going into a little detail about my opinion of the AR. I want it to clear I am not just an AR fan boy, quiet the opposite. I want people in the boat with me to pay the closest attention. It’s easy for people to care less about things that don’t affect them as much. For instance a 10% company wide pay cut want bother you as much if your the only exempt person in the company, that’s just human nature. So anyway, if your not an AR fan this is for you.

The anti’s favorite gun to hate is the AR, it looks scary, it shoots fast, mass shooters give them plenty of fodder. For the average anti gun, or even uneducated “don’t really care” people It is seen as the easiest to gun build a case against. As a result it’s the main (not only) attack point for every assault weapons ban from the federal legislation to several states. It is the gun the media reference every time they want to try to bring up a scary gun. It’s the gun anti politicians mention every time they get in front of a camera. It’s the “weapon of war” it is so to speak the tip of the spear.

All that leads to the point where I get say, as usual their wrong, the AR-15 properly understood is going to be the hardest rifle to ban, ever. They can’t say it’s not good for self defense, their are to many documented cases of it being used, Stephen Willeford comes to mind right off the bat!
They can’t say it’s not a hunting rifle, I personally know many, many people that hunt everything from deer to coyote to beaver. Literally hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of people hunt with a AR style rifle, so much so that many companies market their AR’s specifically to hunters, Remington comes to mind.
They can’t say it’s not a sport rifle, it’s used in more shooting contest and matches than any other rifle in the world. (My speculation, but I’d bet the farm on it) Even if I’m wrong, it’s still one of the most popular in the competition community.
It is the most popular rifle In the US, hands down. More people own a AR than any other gun. As much as I love a Garand, the AR really is America’s rifle.

And as a result, I argue, (now listen you who don’t like AR’s) the AR will be the absolute hardest to get, if they can get the AR-15 banned on a federal level then they have gotten the most popular gun in America banned... think about that for a second. They will have have one of the most popular (if not the most popular) hunting rifles banned, again... think about that...

I submit to you, if they can get the AR-15 banned it will be, in the long term, the first domino. The rest will be easier to get than most popular, sounds reasonable right?

So you non-AR guy and gals, if you want to protect your revolvers, your M1 Garand, your hunting rifles, or your pump shot guns. The absolute best, the easiest thing you can do is fight harder for the right to own an AR-15 than you would for any other gun you own, get off your selfish butt’s and fight for the soldiers on the front line, or when they’re gone you’ll be there and you want have help. Hold up the AR-15, and defend it to the bitter end, even... especially, if you don’t even like it!

Ok, I feel better now, I’ve been wanting to get that off my chest but I’ve been lazy. Knew it’d be long post.

Thank you for posting this. I believe as you do.

I resisted the AR craze for years. Sure, there was a part of me that wanted to add our most recent military arm to my old bolt action WWI and semi-auto WWII and 'Nam rifles. But, other than that, I couldn't justify it to myself. Then, I bought the first one to "play with".

The platform lends itself to being a fun range toy, a good defense weapon, a really good competition rifle, an adequate hunting rifle for small to medium game and an outstanding prairie dog rifle when built to whatever your specs call for. Modern Sporting Rifle is just about the perfect description of the AR.

I too believe the attack on the AR is just the beginning of the disarming of America. All things have a beginning and an end. We should not allow the beginning to be the AR because I fear the end.

Had to stop reading after the first couple of paragraphs, too silly.

If you have some kind of point to make you might want to try and be more succinct, and less inflammatory.

I didn’t mean to be inflammatory, that was not my intent. I simply stated my opinions, if your not mature enough to even read opinions that differ from yours, that’s not my problem.

I have no interest in ARs or other semi autos. I have an M1 Garand for historical reasons, but not for the action. I have a Ruger MK512 bull barreled pistol for newbies who might be more comfortable with a semi auto.

HOWEVER, it is not about the AR, semi autos or anything else. The debate is about personal freedoms and free choice.

And you are probably correct that one day the lynch mob will realize that a semi auto is a semi auto and go after all of them. A huge percentage of firearms currently owned. Then they will realize that a bench rest rifle, a deer rifle, a varmint rifle are sniper rifles and weapons of war and ban those. Then they will realize that revolvers don't leave evidence and are stealth guns, so they will ban revolvers.

Or maybe they will just soon realize that just about every firearm civilian own are based on military weapons and wet their pants over that.

I submit to you, if they can get the AR-15 banned it will be, in the long term, the first domino. The rest will be easier to get than most popular, sounds reasonable right?

Actually not – this fails as a slippery slope fallacy.

And AR platform rifles won’t alone be subject to a ‘ban,’ as such measures would also include other semi-autos.

Attempting to ‘justify’ owning an AR is a poor strategy – it comes off as desperate and contrived.

Indeed, citizens are not required to ‘justify’ exercising a fundamental right as a ‘prerequisite’ to indeed do so.

The best course of action is to cite facts, such as the fact that less than two percent of gun crime and violence is committed with long guns, even fewer with AR and similar rifles, where 'banning' them would therefore have little, if any, effect on reducing overall gun crime.

One of the "justifcations" that the anti gun crowd use is that that framers of the Constitution meant muskets in the 2nd amendment as they could not have foreseen an ar15. Therefore they should be banned.
Well, using that same logic, the 1st amendment, freedom of speech, doesn't cover anything but a newspaper and someone standing on a corner talking.
They could not have foreseen tv, internet, radio.
Therefore, by their logic, there can be no freedom of speech on radio, tv, or the internet.
Try and get the liberal weenies to accept that argument and watch them go crazy.
What is good for their argument, is not good for our argument.

Where have you been, RIP Van Winkle? Asleep? This fight has been going on for a long time. Me and the rest of the choir here are glad you’re joining us. Now stop preaching to us and start writing letters to your governmental critters. Letters? Yes, pen and paper. Add somewhere in your letters how many votes you represent. Such as like minded family and friends that you will discuss their reply to this letter with. Grow that number of family and friends. Educate them, take’em shooting, whatever it takes. This is the simplest of starts that anyone can do.

Appears your ignorance of the MSR may be why you don’t appreciate it more than you do. It comes in more than one caliber and configuration. Broaden your horizon here.

“They can’t say...” Yes they will. Those types who oppose the 2nd Amendment don’t use logic or facts. We have to beat them in the polling booth. Turn to the audience and deliver your sermon there. See family, friends, and increasing numbers mentioned above. Our enemies of the 2nd Amendment have gained control of our education system. They start their indoctrination process early and deliver it all the way through to college. We have our work cut out for us in educating “family and friends”. We’re losing ground here, fast. Again, that’s the least we can all be doing.

Educate yourself more on the MSR platform. You will be better at defending it if you have a better understanding and appreciation of it.

Know who our opponents in this struggle are and what types of people they are. Don’t project onto them. See them for the irrational indoctrinated zombies they are.

I don't own an AR but I oppose banning them because I know it would only be the begining. If the AR was never invented the antis would be after all the other semi autos now like I believe they would be after a successful ban of the AR. A lot of the antis don't know the difference between a semi auto and an automatic in the first place. If they saw a demonstration of how fast a mag can be dropped and another slapped in maybe they'd realize the ban on high capacity mags is pretty ineffective.

Well written.
Great points. Well except for one.

As an AR owner, I love my ARs for all the reasons you hate them. I will add though, the one point you make about the AR being a horrible caliber is mistaken. I say that as one of the great strengths about the AR is it can fire so many different calibers just by changing the upper. If you don’t like 223 then 300 Blackout, 6.5 Grendel are options. Go to the AR15s big brother the AR10 and 308, 6.5 Creedmore and others are options. Back on the AR15 if you want to shoot cheap 22LR is an option.

AR15s aren’t the cheapest guns out there, but when you figure in how flexible they are and how inexpensive many accessories are, they’re a great value. So while a high end AR may be too expensive for most people, a good base gun is within the reach of most people.

I couldn’t agree more! The AR will not be the sole subject of a ban, but it will be the most referenced in that debate, which is good for us because it’s one of the easiest to defend.

And I’m not saying to justify owning an AR, I couldn’t care less who owns one. I’m saying it’s importance and relevance have it a unique place as the main point of attack while also being easily defendable with.... facts.

I bought an AR because it is the rifle I am probably most comfortable with. Having spent 8 years as an Infantryman. And after the Florida shooting I will be holding onto my "evil black assault rifle" regardless of what the media thinks they know about firearms.

I’m not sure why you think you know me so well, but the fact that anti’s are out there isn’t a new revelation to me. I’ve been fighting for quiet a while, I think I made my first call to my senator about gun issues just over a decade ago, how about you? I will admit, I don’t hand write letter as often as I should, phone calls are my go to.

When I said “that can’t say...” well obviously, what was implied was they couldn’t say it and it withhold scrutiny. They can say it, and their arguements can be defeated easily. Let’s face it, the anti’s want be converted but the overwhelming population just doesn’t care one way or the other, that’s who we have to win.

And for what it’s worth, I’m not sure you know how familiar I am with AR style rifles.... are you stalking me?... but Im familiar enough with it to know it’s not my favorite platform, even in different calibers it still has many attributes I just don’t care for. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. But that doesn’t mean we should get all defensive, they’re subjective opinions for Pete’s sake.

Lastly if you think I’m preaching to quire, maybe you need to stop projecting. Their are many people here, though a definite minority, that just don’t care much for any semi auto. People like you are are already fighting for it, and most people like me agree with you but just aren’t passionate enough to do anything, I’m simply trying to convince them it’s In their best interest to help you with more that lip service.

There is a saying in cattle country – it's not the machine it's the operator. It's a hard fact of life that any one of our employees could create more havoc with a log chain and a 9570 John Deere tractor than a schoolboy could with AR 15. However, none of our employees are the type to raise havoc and cause accidents with machinery or they wouldn't be put on the machinery to begin with. The state of Florida had a couple of dozen chances to put Cruz away from society for the protection of that society. However, they didn't want to spoil his chances of a "successful" life. Unfortunately his idea of a successful life was to shoot up the school. If you want to ban something for the betterment of society, ban idiot school administrators and leave the peaceful citizens alone.

(My name is Selena and I am a ranter. )

One of the "justifcations" that the anti gun crowd use is that that framers of the Constitution meant muskets in the 2nd amendment as they could not have foreseen an ar15. Therefore they should be banned.

THIS is something we need to really jump on. This is based on the idea that single shot, muzzle loading muskets were the only known firearm technology at the time. Wrong.

1. Lorenzoni lever action, multi shot flintlocks had been around since 1660.
2. Cookson repeater, an updated design that was safe to use was manufactured and sold in Boston in 1756.
3. The Puckle gun was a multi shot, magazine fed flintlock long arm demonstrated to the British Navy in 1722.
4. The Girandoni repeating rifle was developed in 1780, used by the Austrian army by 1790 and by Lewis and Clark in 1804.

The 2nd Amendment was ratified 1791. Muskets were far from the only technology known at the time. The more advanced technology was not more commonly used due to the expense given the manufacturing methods at the time.

I can remember back in the 70's I had a few pistols. Back in those days the AG crowd had pistols as their poster boy. I had a lot of peer pressure because of that. I rolled with liberal college academic types (my wife was one) and so were a lot of our friends. I really wasn't as conflicted about that as the OP seems to be with his AR. I didn't own them because it was some sort of statement about my RKBA, I owned them because I truly enjoyed shooting them, no other reason. It wasn't a necessity for survival either as I've never had to use one for SD. I hunted but I used a rifle or a shotgun for that. My pistols were nothing but range toys, as most AR's are.

So why all the gnashing of teeth over your AR? No need to make excuses for it or yourself. Just don't have one for the wrong reason. If you don't use it you may have it for the wrong reason. Because I can isn't much of a reason.
