Which compact pistol??

ehh. I've shot my small but fair share of Glocks.. Just can't fall for bricks that go bang. I NEED something with a little more of a soul than a brick.

He suggests a com-block brick of ugliness then derides Glock, heh. :D

In all seriousness, the Shield 9 seems like a good answer and I've even seen them consistently on Grabagun and PSA at reasonable prices.

Still see some 365s and Hellcats around at not too outrageous prices either.

Though, you'll probably have better luck finding ammo for the Mak

If you want a cheap 9mm for $200 or less, try a Diamondback. I bought one at Academy for less than $200 and it has a good trigger and is accurate at short range.

If you want a milsurp, I highly recommend a CZ-82. A bit heavy, but it's an excellent pistol, and you'll have a better chance of finding ammo for it during droughts.

If you want a new, modern gun and can't be persuaded into a Glock, then Shield for the win. Too bad times/prices are so crazy. When the Shield 2.0 first came out, you could find NIB Gen Ones for $250.

Walther PPS Gen 1 , yes my son and I both like the Gen 1 better, we carry them EDC, I used to carry a Shield, the PPS is better. I have a .40 and a 9mm PPS, in normal times they were less than $400 for a Gen 1 like new with mags, try your luck with this at your budget 5 minutes before auction ends :)

I carry my Diamondback DB9 the most as it is as big as I can pocket carry. It DEFINITELY isn't a plinker though! It is so lite it beats you up pretty good!

I would recommend the Kahr CM9! It is small and lite enough to carry in the neck bag on my bicycle but big enough to be a real nice as well as fun shooter. With the extended magazine and pinky rest it is a very enjoyable range gun!

The Springfield XD mod 2 compact in .45acp is another great range gun with the 13 round extended magazine and nicely concealable with the 9 round magazine but bigger and heavier than I want to carry with me on my mountain bike.

In my opinion the CZ75D compact it too big and way too heavy to carry on a bicycle.

Bad time to be hunting for a pistol and/or ammo, hope you find something. My suggestion is a S&W Shield or a Kahr CM9. While Makarovs are rugged reliable pistols they are not the most pleasant to shoot because of the recoil due to it being a blowback.

More facts. I would add OP is looking "plinking" and bag carry, so range pleasantness prolly not a priority. Generally pistols with <4" barrel/small frame guns >.22lr , 100 rnds max @ range is normal. I have no experience with "real" maks as the CZ82 is dbl stack and, imo, upgrade from traditional maks. Ergo is nice, but not range gun for sure.
I shot the Kahr prior, and it certainly is not a joy after a couple mags either.

That glock is going to go for a ridiculously high price. It's been on there for less than a day and it's already bid up over $330 and has 9 days left.
Watching both, I'll let ya know...'Normal 'retail is about $500..some for $550-$600..no astronomic, IMHO.

One central Texas Academys had a G30 and a G17 in store for just above pre panic prices. I recently saw a G30s in an auction go for $900 plus. I guess at least two people couldn't wait for a deal.

Definitely agree for the smaller single stack and micro guns.

But subcompact double stacks like the Glock 26, Ruger SR9c, M&Pc, 320 Subcompact etc I can shoot all day and I think they shoot very much like full size options.

Speaking of, the Ruger SR9c is a great option.

I think you could win it at less than $400 if you try a few minutes to the end.Try $401.99 and I am sure I could get it, few know how good they are :)

I went through the exercise of measuring a bunch of .380's to find the smallest one for pocket/pouch carry.

Ruger LCP.

Now if larger size is okay, then I'm with the Shield and P365 people. But also think the Makarov and CZs are neat alternatives.

But like Hartkopf, my soul belongs to revolvers. An S&W M60 is also a very reliable pouch gun.

If you're not afraid of buying used and you can find one, my pick for your needs would be a Smith "Third Generation" Model 6906: reliable as the sun rising in the east, well-made, affordable and built like a tank.

Since you mention Makarov, there's the Radom P-64. Makarov caliber, all steel, compact, and, when you can find them, they're
around 200$. Hammer fired, nice little de-cocker safety, slides right into your pocket.

That said SwampWolf is right, the 6906 is a tough pistol to beat. A little bigger than the P-64, but not much.

If you like the 9x18 cartridge or Walther PP style pistols, The Hungarian FEG PA-63 is another option. The PA-63 is basically a copy of the Walther but chambered in 9x18. FEG did make them in 380 and 32 caliber versions.

My first choice for a small carry pistol would be the Springfield Armory Hellcat. My second choice would be the Sig 365, but I would need to change the sights as they are too dim and too small for my eyes, A better gun (but lower capacity) than both would be the Boberg/Bond Arms Bullpup if you aren't concerned that it doesn't like uncrimped ammo. This gun is fantastic for concealed carry and is the fastest from a draw concealed carry gun I have ever shot.

Cheap? Look for a used Detonics Auto 9. It is a heavy gun but extremely well built and easy to conceal.

If you're looking for milsurp, perhaps one of the Star BM's? Looks like J&G still has them available.

I got one when they had them for $200 (199.99 :))

Likely the best “range” pistol I have bought in that price range.

They are out of them now and the last asking price was $230. Still lots of worse choices for more though.

Certainly not as featherweight as other $199, 9mm or 380 pistols I have but that’s what makes it a better “shooter”.

Any of them would be way under your budget and fit in a bag on a bicycle though.

I bought a lot of Military Surplus guns during the C&R "Golden Age".and if you like the all metal, work every time guns. either a CZ82 or Makarov would be perfect. The CZ 82 is more refined (except for the East German Makarov's) and carries 12 rounds to the Makarov's eight. The 82' s DA trigger is better and the gun seems like more of a commercial one than a surplus. Avoid the P-64. I bought.two and sent them back. The only C&R purchase I ever did that with. Terrible DA, and almost too light SA. Kicks like a .45 Derringer and the sights are impossible. I would suggest the Hellcat, but mine was $565.00 OTD the door, so pricey. The CZ's and Makarov's will last forever with a little care.
