.45 acp with .357 mag and .44 mag a close second and third.
.45 because of self defense, .357 because it's a great, all-around, easy to pack cartridge for protection/hunting in the woods - 2-legged and 4-legged, and .44 mag for real hunting.
.380. I caqn keep 'em in 4" at 25 yards with mine. I know it's considered "marginal", but I think all hand gun rounds are marginal. consider the .30 US Carbine--criticized for being marginal, but delivering more energy to a target than .44.
At least with the .380, I can hit them. I can't do that with a heavier caliber. (old injry to my arm.)
My favorite caliber is 9x23 Winchester. It is the ballistic duplicate of the 357 Magnum in a case that can be fired through a semi-auto. I even reload with 158gn and 124gn 357 bullets.
