Never seen a Contender or Desert Eagle???

"Pistol" is a term much older than automatics and Sam Colt marketed his lovelies as "revolving pistols".
I thought Desert Eagle came in 357mag ,44mag and 50 , ?

ahw.... you are right forgot the Contender , that opens this up for anything , 7mm-08 35rem 45-70 ect ect ..... lol ....

This is super tough!!

38 special because it's mild recoil make it easy to shoot but enough pop to still make it interesting. Plus loading 1 cylinder at a time makes you make every shot count. Also police carried it for half a century with many, many other available calibers so it must have it's merit as a lethal round. Did I mention fun to shoot?? Plus many very fine and inexpensive revolvers to choose from.

This thread originally began in the Revolver section and at some point was moved by a friendly moderator. Most of the original replies focused on revolver cartridges since it was the revolver section.

Heck, just pick a cartridge. :)

Strictly for the sake of playing "favorites?

Lacking any other criteria, it'd have to be the .22LR and the gun would be my stainless Ruger MK II Government 6 7/8".

It's fun, easy on the hands, ears and pocket-book, can be used to fill the pantry, and in a pinch using 40 gr. "solids", self-defense*.

*Before anyone loses their minds, yes, yes, I know it is nowhere near the optimal choice for SD and that there are better choices for that role, but my choice here is simply upon it being a "favorite".

.22 LR, by far, is my favorite. I virtually never carry a .22, but recreational shooting is so very important, for several reasons. My .22 handgun is an S&W Model 17, which besides being fun to shoot, is an excellent understudy and training gun for my more serious DA revolvers and DAK duty SIG. I have a .22 conversion unit to fit 1911 pistols. Sometimes, also, I shoot my wife's .22 Ruger auto.

As cumulative recoil gets to be more of an issue, as my wrists get older, I may purchase a .22 conversion unit for my duty pistol, if I keep wearing the badge long enough to justify the expense.

Pistols are handguns. Semi-automatics and revolvers are both pistols.
Yes, indeed! Sam Colt patented revolving pistols. In Texas, where Colt revolving pistols played such a large role in our history, we have not forgotten, and often one still hears "pistol" in reference to revolvers. :)

#3 post in favor of 10mm. How could Sonny Crockett be wrong? (Although I believe it was a Bren Ten .45ACP he was wielding in Miami Vice) My logic when I started collecting 10mm was pretty simple - there have been somewhere around 25 different models manufactured total, excluding everybody-and-their-dog's over-priced, custom 1911 in 10mm. Much easier to get one of each of 25 than one of each of - how many models of .45ACP have been manufactured?:what:

.22LR would have to be close second based on volume and bang for the buck. Shooting is a perishable skill and practice is mandatory.

.45 acp, no question.

As a handloader, I load probably 10x the number of .45 acp as anything else. If I had not sold my M25-2, there is a small chance that I would have never loaded anything but .45 acp.

Nah, probably not... :)

I really like them all, or at least the common ones. I probably wouldn't buy .25acp or 32acp because I don't see much point to them (.380s are just as concealable, ie), but still basically like them.

If I had to pick one, I'd go with 10mm. It has speed, and it has power. It's more effective than most handgun calibers, and is made for pistols (just like them more than revolvers). Handgun calibers are so far less effective than rifle calibers, that I'll gladly take about as good as I can get. Additionally, Glock chambers it, and I've had good success with Glock.

Back in the early '80s, I shot 10k+ of .45acp a year, all through 1911s. Still my sentimental favorite, and my 1st choice for a defensive round.

9mm. 45acp is bigger and i know people love to debate 9mm vs 45acp but i can have 20 rounds of 9mm in a glock 17 that is the same size as a 1911 with an 8 round mag.

Here in CA, I carry a G30 (.45acp) - and it holds same number of cartridges as a G17.....

10+1 is all we get.
