Naming Guns

I haven't named any of my guns. Or at least, not yet.

I understand the idea. If I had any particular attachment to any of them, or if any of them had any real significance, I might consider it. But for the moment, they are all "just tools" and it would be silly. Might as well name my toaster or hex bits.

Can't say that I have. People are free to do as they wish, but the whole concept just seems goofy to me. Like something people do to try to "fit in" because its something they've heard others do. I have the same opinion when it comes to a lot of slang. Something that you say as part of your natural vernacular is fine, but every once in a while you run across a person who will use 10 different slang names for the exact same thing in one conversation and you can tell they're doing it just to prove how many of the slangs they know.

I guess I can see where some people will take care of something with a name. A blender will be abused until it breaks. Stacey the STI Spartan may get extra care.

Actually I have heard of one excellent reason to name a gun.

If you are one of those folks that don't go armed 24-7 and you happen to get into a developing 'social situation' that might be decided more in your favor if you were armed, it is nice to be able to tell the spouse to "Go get Jimmy" and have her return with a loaded 357. This will work much better that "Go get the 357" which might bring things to a climax right then. If Jimmy is not needed, no harm, no foul. But if 'he' was needed, and the spousal unit quietly, unobtrusively, slipped 'him' to you before things got dicey then at least you have an equalizer.

Yes, this has happened to me, no shots were fired and the only way anyone ever found out about it was when my #1 son asked why "Dad didn't stand up for him better" and was told what had occurred that neither he or the angry neighbors had noticed!
Yes, I was prepared to use lethal force to protect him from a neighbor twice his size that thought he 'needed a whooping'.

Or one can just accept that some folks do things that they do not understand or that they would not do. It is nothing to get wrapped around that axel about. Why do some people use PGO shotguns? Why do some people like Glock? Why do some people like AKs? I dunno, but it is their life and I guess they can like whatever they want without permission from me or anyone else.

I've never named a gun either. I have Saiga, WASR, SKS, etc. Pretty easy to keep them straight and the wife and kids know which is which too.

I haven't named any guns, but plenty of people do. It is no business of mine if they do, nor are we here to talk about others choices in a negative way. We are here to talk about guns, not each other.

Well said Walkalong.

Besides naming the occasional firearm is just fun, go ahead give it a try... :D

There's some Very interesting psychology at work with this topic.

I've never named any gun I own/ed or used, or a car, or a hammer, or a toaster; but I can easily see how it might benefit someone greatly given their circumstance...

I don't name them all, but I named my new rifle "Sam".

The shortened version of Samantha, FWIW.

Long and smooth, plenty curvy. she can put it right where its needed anytime, anywhere, as long as I ask nicely and press the button right.

Hope the rifle lasts longer than 'er namesake.

Well, I can't imagine anyone making fun of the men who owned Ticklicker and Old Betsy, more than once.

Ever hear of Fluffy?

How do you react to a Marine who has named his rifle?

I have a firearm that was named by its' maker - a man I never met - back in the 1950's. It is a .30 cal flintlock called "the Little Beauty".

But, maybe flintlocks have a little more character.

the only gun I own that has a name is my S&W 629-4 with the 3in. bbl. When I say I'm going to bring "THUMPER" to the range, everyone knows what gun I'm bringing ! :D

I have a 22-250 on a Choate Stock that I have Named:

"VARMINT POPPEN EARGESPLITTEN LOUDEN BOOMER"

Hows that for a name ?

Good Shooting

Every gun I have gets a name once ive killed something with it. It took a life so I gave it a name in once place. Dad did it grampa did it and my kids prolly will too. From my 22 to my M4 to the MK 19 on my truck. The mark is name bridget the B**CH because she always would jamp when i needed her the most lol.

Couple of decades ago I named my 6 pound sledge hammer with a 12 inch handle "Thor".

Don't name my guns though, just call them by make, model or caliber.
Ha! I did the exact same thing. About a 100 year old hunk a iron on a many times broke stub of a handle. A few years ago I fitted a new handle to it though.

Funny, a friend of mine has a 45/70 Marlin 1895 guide gun with the ported barrel. I call it "The God of Thunder", or "Thor" for short. It lives up to the title.

Conversely I've referred to my SGL-21 as "Heavy Metal" since I got it.

For the short time I had a Chiappa 1911-22 I called it a paper weight. That's about all it was good for.

Some folks do, some folks don't. Nothing to get emotionally invested in whether they do or don't.

I have a ParaP12 that was dubbed "Stumpy The Clown Car" because it seemed that more than it should hold kept coming out of it. That's the only firearm that's gotten a name and only because of friends.

So, some do and some don't and it really doesn't matter, does it?
