Welcome to the Rimfire Match for the month of August! This match is open to any and every 22 caliber (as well as 17 and 20 caliber) rimfire rifle including the perennial favorite .22LR, as well as the .22Short, .22Long, .22 Mag., .17HM2, .17HMR, and 5mm Rem RF Mag (as well as any oddball rimfires that you might have). This match is meant to be challenging and educational, but most of all FUN. Hopefully it will get you out to the range and shooting your rifle. If you have one handy, make sure an bring a friend too.

There are Two Optics Divisions:
->Iron sights and non-magnified optics and red dots. Shot at 50yds.
->Scopes and other magnified sighting devices. Shot at 50yds.

*Note that both Irons and optics are shot at 50yds in this match. It should make for a good comparison between the two sighting methods.

There are Two Rifle Classes:
->Unlimited/Target Rifles (highly modified rifles, rests, target sights, high magnification optics- over 10x [in the appropriate division] may be used)
->Sporting Rifles (Includes All Non-Target Class Autoloaders, Bolt Actions, Single Shots, Pumps, & Lever Rifles)

Both classes can be shot from any position. Rests/Sandbags/bipods are permitted in the Target Class only. Shooting stick(s) are now permitted for both classes (either crossed or walking stick style). Use of a sling is encouraged.

50 Yd. (Irons) Target: See attachment below. Considering the difficulty of last months endeavor I decided that it might be best to make this one a bit easier (and less taxing on the ammo supply). Scale to 100% on standard 8.5x11in. paper (for best results print from Windows Photo Viewer with "fit picture to frame" deselected). The objective is simple...just fire 5 shots at the bulls. You only need to break the line to earn the indicated point value (1-25; indicated by each ring), for a maximum score of 125pts!

50 Yd. (Optics) Target: Same as above.

If you enjoyed this match and want a bit more challenge check out the concurrent Centerfire Match using the same target at a bit more distance.

When you are satisfied you've done your best post/attach (or shoot me a PM) a photo or scan of your target with as much of the following information as possible: Forum name (or name you want posted in the results), Rifle, make, model, vintage (if known), Sights/Optics (with magnification if applicable), Ammo, Position, Distance, Conditions (in/outdoors, wind, temperature...). Multiple submissions are allowed (in same or different division/class with same or different rifles).

Self-scoring is encouraged and appreciated. All submissions due before August 32nd. ;)

Looks like fun, and a whole lot easier than last month. Just to make sure I'm printing it right; the center bull should be ~.500" wide right?

Lemme measure...be right back...

Using calipers the "master" copy measures .490in. or 12.45mm...which is pretty darn close to .5".

:)

Well, I guess I'll get us started. I managed to shoot a couple of these yesterday before some new shooters showed up and stole all my guns :). I nailed the first one with my Savage so I shot the rest with a new to me Marlin 39A.

Zoomed in on bullseye:

Looks like a 125 to me, but it's hard to tell for sure.

Same rifle as always:
Savage Mark II
Nikon 6-18x40 Buckmaster
Shooting off a Harris Bipod
Wolf Match ammo
at 50 yards

Next up is my contribution for unlimited non-magnified:

I counted 111 on this one. I'm really liking this Marlin.

Specs:
Marlin 39A
Williams Aperture Rear Sight
Shot off sandbags
Wolf Match ammo
50 yards

I'll have to try unsupported with the Marlin next week.

Well booger, maybe I made it too easy*. Good shootin', Jon!

*If it comes down to it we can go by group size.

:)

Just got back from the range, and none too soon, it started raining on me as I was taking down my best target of the evening. :)

The score is 115 (after reviewing the target more I don't think the bottom most shot is in the 23 ring). for my S&W M&P 15-22 with a no magnification primary arms M4 style red dot.

Target was shot at 50 yards from the prone position (magazine was resting on the ground due to necessity). I would guess sporting unmagnified class.

This is my best of 4 targets, but judging by how some THR members shoot I doubt it will be the winning score.

You'd be correct...and a fine display of marksmanship for that category.

The match has been running for all of two days and we already have more scores on the board than last match (though I am sure there were plenty of folks, like myself, that just blew it by not knowing their limits).

:)

Yikes.
Just realized the new match is up and running,
and there's already some great targets posted!

That's a nice looking little group there, Jon!

Will we be shooting for X's this month?.

I was thinking that we might have to end up using group size for a tie breaker, but that isn't a bad idea either. It would certainly make scoring easier...perhaps the best solution is to use a center-X count and (if necessary) break that tie with group size.

:)

It looks like there might be another shortage of targets entered now that you've spoiled it for the rest of us.

I thought about not posting until later in the month, but I decided that posting now would get more people to try and share the top spot with me. I suspect we'll see a lot of 125s this month.

Are X's hits on the printed '25' or shots that are entirely within the 25 ring?

Within the 25-ring. No sense in making it overly complicated and hard to determine hits.

:)

Decided to try my hand this afternoon. Couldn't get the printer to print fullsized. The center bull only is only 7/16". Could only print two targets because the printer ran out of ink. Shot it anyway for fun.

Beautiful day, mid eighties, very light left to right wind.

Unlimited class off a bench. Rifle is a Remington 540-X shooting Wolf Match Target.

Kinda proud of this one!

Great shootin' oldgold!
I had a chance to shoot a 540X last winter, those are nice rifles!!!

Looking at these targets, I wouldn't be surprised if some people end up measuring groups this month!?

oldgold Gooood group . Looks more like 2 controled groups . What did it measure? . I got to go to the range and try.

May very well come down to it judging by these last few submissions.

I'd sure hate to be a squirrel poking my head round the tree when you folks were heading down the trail. ;)

Looks like a 3x to me, but I'll wait for oldgold's judgement before jotting anything down.

It's been four days and we already have three 125s on the books...this promises to be an interesting match.

:)

I'd rather not add extra shots just because a few people that have already shot well may not have an opportunity to get back out to add a couple shots. If it comes down to group size I think OnTarget is a good idea.

:)

Got to the range this morning early - a bit humid, but wonder of wonders, NO WIND blowing in this part of Kansas! (Actually out of the South at 1-3 mph.)

50 yards as per rules, Savage Mark II heavy barrel in 17 Mach 2. BSA Sweet 17 4-12 X 40 scope set to 10 power, fired from the prone using a sling rested only on my elbow so It should qualify for sporting class/optics. Took me 5 targets before I got this one. Kept getting 1 or 2 fliers outside the 25 ring.

Score 125 with maybe 1 X depending on how X's are scored. Ammo was Eley standard 17HM2.

Xs are scored as completely within the 25pt. bulls. You have at least 3X, perhaps four. That Eley sure does perform doesn't it. When I had my .17HM2 everything was inconsistent (ranging from disappointing to dismal to improperly constructed )...then I tried Eley which did very well.

:)

I don't own one of the Springfield XD's in any flavor, but the guy I teach concealed carry with here in KS has one in .45ACP. The second class we taught, he had it on the range when we were doing the qualifications. It's not the prettiest of handguns, but it sure is accurate. I like Springfield's system better than the Glock as they added a grip safety. Much better IMO than just that little flipper in the trigger.

Springfield makes some very good guns. Buddy of mine just bought a brand new M1A Scout with a 16" national match barrel. Took him with me to the range this morning and got to fire the first mag through it. Using the old military 1000 inch distance and Mav's silhouette targets from one of the previous matches, I zeroed it for him. Dang what a nice shooting rifle. If there had been any way I could have got out of there with it, I'd have taken it home. Just don't have the 2 grand to buy one of my own -- :D

Finally printed and shot some of these targets for this month!

Shot at 50-yards prone, using a Winchester 52 with Redfield Olympic sights. I used my shooting jacket, glove and sling, make me unlimited-non-magnified.

First target, using Wolf Match Target:

th_DSCN0790.jpg

I score it as a 119, but that shot just on the left of the 25-ring is close, it might plug in as a 120.

Second target, using RWS Target Rifle:

th_DSCN0791.jpg

I SWEAR I fired five rounds at this target. I'm hoping somebody with the target software might be able to run it and see. I think that hole in the 24 ring is a triple, but I won't "score and run it."

I hope to get out tomorrow or next weekend and give it another run. I may even try the centerfire match with my AR-15 at 100 yards, but this target at 50-yards was a challenge to my ability to resolve a clear sight picture.

And one more target for fun, fired prone at 100 yards with the Wolf Match Target. Fifteen rounds went downrange for this one, 3 for sighters (first one low, next two high, then I was on and sent down 12 in a row).
