50-50 Rimfire Match:

Gregaw - not bad shooting at all! Yes, it's a 115 21+21+24+24+25=115.

As long as any part of the grease ring breaks the line, it's scored as the higher value. Those are the original NRA rules for scoring matches and they still hold true today. Even the professional matches are scored that way, so "Ya Done Good!"

Thanks all. I've enjoyed shooting this gun this summer. It is actually my wife's. She's had it since she was a young teen. I think her dad bought it for her. I've been teaching our 8 year old to shoot with it this year. He's doing great!

I've been having trouble with the rear sight moving. I tightened the screw on it as much as I was comfortable doing. (I didn't want to break the wife's gun!) :) Any suggestions to keep it in place?

It has a screw in it? Is it for windage or for attachment? If it is for windage I wouldn't use Loc-tite, but if only for attachment blue Loc-tite would be just fine.

BTW, I too have an old Stevens (though mine is a SA, model 87D) and it has proven to be an excellent shooter as well. Mine was the first firearm that I ever shot, and came from my grandparents. It's my "big game rimfire"...my grandmother used it to take a bull in the garden. It was the family's only firearm and the bull was tearing up her peas...so it had to go (and given that little lady's marksmanship skills it proved good enough for the job!).

:)

Hello all. This is going to be my first attempt at this so bear with me. I haven't been big into shooting for that long, I have been into guns for quite a while just not trying to be accurate with them. Anyway I know none of these will win but its the best I've been able to shoot so far. Like was said before though this gets me to the range a lot more for practice. I did pretty good with the 22-250 also that I'm gonna post over in the center fire match.

Here's my practice shots, the first five at the range and they were the best five all day.

Oh its a Remington 597 with a BSA sweet 17 off of a front rest/rear bag.

Here goes.

And I went again today and shot these.

Then I had to take out this squirrel.

Edit, I almost forgot this one. Its got to many holes but the top 5 were a group with an old single shot Ithaca 22lr/ iron sights shot resting my elbows on the bench.

Welcome, Texas4x4hoe! Don't sell yourself short, that's a fine display of marksmanship.

:)

The sight on my Stevens, albeit a different model, hasn't a screw at all so I have nothing to compare to. FWIW if a sight is loose in a dovetail (which doesn't sound like the case) I will typically just stake it in place (either in the dovetail to conceal the mark or above for greater strength).

:)

There is just one screw at the very front of the sight assembly. You can see it as the foremost lump at the front of the sight (far right) in the picture of the gun above. No matter how tight I make it the sight can move side to side with a little pressure. It's not bad enough to shift while I'm shooting I don't trust it after transporation and storage with a few test shots.

Interesting, mine looks identical to the photo above, but instead of a screw it has a skinny dovetail (not the standard 3/8", but closer to 0.25in.). Given the new information, I believe the problem lies in the length of screw and depth of hole; in other words: it's bottoming out. If it were me I would try filing a thousandth or so off the bottom of the screw to correct the problem, then add a bit of blue Loc-Tite.

:)

I wouldn't expect it to perform like Tenex, but Aguila Match Rifle is worth a shot IMO. I have found it to work much better than most other similarly priced cartridges, and it's Eley primed so it might be just the ticket for value-conscious target ammunition. Of course your other Eley fodder is with a try too.

:)

Yep. Tried irons in the centerfire match.
I need to get the 22 back out to the range again.
Been quite busy lately, but I'll get back out there soon!

Thank You so very much for doing this. I had a lot of fun at my first go.

Very hot day in SE Texas. I was sitting on a bench with my elbow on a table, sweat dripping.

First go of about 4 or 5. Remington 582 with open sights. Remington Golden Bullets. Score was 108/109.. not really worried since it doesn't beat the current leader. I may try again if I get the chance. Just good fun.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it, Grandthumb! You always win when you play for fun (and a respectable score at any rate). BTW, it looks like a 109 from where I sit.

:)

Open sights are way tougher for some of us.
Tell me about it. Most of my non-scoped rifles wear a aperture sight of some sort, which seems to help a great deal.

:)

I'm about done with iron sights at this distance (age 44). I have never been a scope user, but just may need to jump in.

I'm still debating if irons are really worth it or not. Even though I am 28 and can still shoot irons, I still think a low power scope is superior in just about every way. Which I why I am looking at a scoped .22 for my next one (possibly a CZ).

Indeed, I have been utterly slammed lately. Please forgive my inattentiveness, however I think the problem lies in that I read the post prior to the edit that you pointed out.

Just to clarify, my comment was not meant to be a criticism at all. I know that running a match like this is a suprisingly demanding and often thankless job, and I really do appreciate you doing it. Thanks for all the great targets and I hope they keep coming.

PS. I really need to learn to use smilies more often, tone just doesn't translate well over the web.

I didn't take it as such, and welcome any and all advice and critiques.

Thank you for the kind words, Jon. Despite being busy as of late, I really enjoy the match, even when I am unable to get to the range as often as I would like. I really appreciate all the support and participation it wouldn't be the same without you folks. :)

Well here is likely to be my last submission for this month. It took 10 more targets but I finally managed to out shoot my previous one. I shot five targets on this beautiful day and this was the last one.

The rifle is still my M&P 15-22 with a primary arms M4 clone 2moa red dot (unmagnified sporting class). Ammo used was CCI Target as opposed to the Blazer from before.

I was prone at 50 yards, loading one round at a time this time around and it seemed to help. The magazine was still in place for the last round hold open and acted similar to a shooting stick.

I count up a score of 117.

Well done, FE1911! Just to clarify things a bit: large magazines (20-30s, excludes 5-10rnd stubbies) are fine to use in the sporting class. They act more like a shooting stick/monopod than a fixture to steady the rifle, and in some ways they can actually be detrimental, so I see no reason to bump them up to the target class.

:)
