"American Guns" TV show.....

Seen a few episodes now and I can't stand it.

skiwi nailed it I think:

1. Build a new gun from a block of metal (at a ridiculously high price)
2. Have problems building the gun, Rich has to step into help/solve.
3. Make his gunsmiths look like amateur (last show had them holding parts in their hands to file -no vice huh?
4. Wife bickers with Rich about money, but he wins. Flash large stacks of money.
5. Rich has to go to a gun collection or deliver a gun, but has to fly in with a helicopter.
6. Rich shoots the clients guns, to prove himself.
7. Low ball prices when buying guns
8. Deal or bet will be "sweetened" with precious metal -gold or silver
9. Everyone gets to shoot an exploding target (in slow motion)
10. Mix in sibling rivalry and gratuitous cleavage shots

I get mad at the idiots that walk into his shop and quickly agree to a custom build for "ohh, I could probably do that for 20k."

I wanna barf at the not so attractive, gratuitous flesh shots.

His lowball offers are insulting....even to me on my couch in my living room.

His gunsmiths...they are the worst. I'm not sure if they're really that bad or if they're just playing dumb for the cameras.

At 1am, I might watch it for a bit when the alternative is food dehydrators, weight loss videos and cash 4 gold.

I have watched them all (morbid curiosity). This latest one where they built a Repro Win 1866 just had me rolling. I mean seriously, I damn near hit the floor I was laughing so hard when he quoted that ridiculous price ($18,000 to $20,000). Who in their right mind would EVER pay that much to have someone build that JUST for the "Made In America" honor? There are several companies that make them just as nice (probably better) for $1200!!! Cimarron, Uberti, Rossi just to name a few and all 3 are highly functional, accurate reproductions.

And then there are the monkeys downstairs test firing barreled actions without a stock or a brace. Saying they do it just in case of a malfunction they wont hurt a new stock! Well what about your damn hands!!! Or God forbid that .458lott is too much to handle the recoil while holding it like that and it gets away from you. Oh well I guess the barrel and action hitting the floor wouldn't hurt anything huh.

Instead of the warning they have on the show about being professionals or supervised by professionals, they should have the warning stating "This is exactly what you should NEVER do under any circumstance. These are untrained idiots trying to appear as if they have a clue. Please never attempt anything they do on this show as it is completely retarded and only here for your viewing pleasure"

the helicopter scenes do get super annoying...

his prices are outrageous...

his daughter is eye candy...

the son does show talent for engraving... anyone else notice his watch (and his dads)?

(the mom on the show isn't their biological mom is she?)

you can tell rich is a jerk...

I think the family in general shows better gun safety than Sons of Guns (for example when the 'cowboy' shot the outhouse, Rich immediately tried to secure the weapon when the cowboy was swinging it upwards)...

I sorta like how he does sweeten the deal with things (such as the silver bar)...

I hate how he shoots the clients gun before them (I understand testing it when you are making it, but not shooting it in front of the client before he/she does)...

We all know rich is a good shot, it gets tiring he has to prove it every single episode...

and I have to finally say, I dunno why, but I do find American Guns a lot more entertaining than Sons of Guns... (Which I really liked when it started off, now Sons of Guns simply sucks) (especially when I ordered an AK from them and they went over the build time by about 2 months and I finally asked for a refund, yes, I'm still bitter over it, but I am actually glad I have my money instead of an overpriced AK)...

AHHHHHHH yes I forgot about the watch thing!!! When he was trading that guy out of the Luger and he put his Rolex in to "sweeten the pot" he stated that most every "gun collector" owns fancy watches like that. I've been collecting firearms for many years and have a pretty fair collection yet I do not feel the need to go waste 10 grand on a wristwatch. Nor does most of the other collectors I know. I guess he feels the need to compensate?

Well at least one smith did say 'why doesn't he buy a Uberti?'

The low ball offers on this weeks gun collection made me cringe.

Yeah Rob that was pretty sickening wasn't it. And of course he had to carry 150 thousand in that money case to "impress" the viewers. Did you notice how he flashed it to the seller?

We all know rich is a good shot, it gets tiring he has to prove it every single episode...

What leads you to the conclusion that Rich is a good shot? I have yet to see him make a shot that a trained monkey couldn't make at the ranges he shoots at!

Do they have a 'store front'? From what I have seen the store doesn't look all that big. Same with Red Jacket. Do they have a store front? I wouldn't mind visiting the stores just to say I was there.

I went onto Rich's Facebook page just for giggles, and you would not believe some of the idiots bowing to this dope. I actually put up a link to this thread and you should have seen the NASTY response I got from Rich himself before he deleted it!

So I learned that most states ban shotgun mags over three rounds (maybe in the field - but not completly - but that could just be a slip as the context was hunting guns).

Also, that guy had the best gun collection, one of the staff ever saw? Didn't look super to me. I know folks with 20K champion skeet guns.

Did they get the barrel from Uberti? :D

I watched the show on DVR last night. I'm not very knowledgeable on historic western guns, but $18,000 to $20,000 for a reproduction 1866 seems outrageous. They machine the body from a block of brass after transposing working drawings to a CNC machine, so may be 1-2 days of work ( being generous) fit parts from a supplier such as the barrel, action, and stock etc. Then claim they built the first 1866 since production ceased.

I have no idea how much a real historic, collectible 1866 goes for, but would question the collectible value of what is a reproduction gun. The custom engraving was good though. I can understand researching the different engraving designs from books etc. As a designer myself, I noticed he was tracing the pattern from a design underneath. This could be two things. Tracing over an existing design or refining an original design.

I cannot help compare the common practice of custom 1911 builders creating modern 1911s much like Gunsmoke did with the 1866, but they aren't charging these crazy prices.

Last comment: the shooting event for the firefighters. While it sounded like a nice thing to do, it looked like the wife and daughter "showing them how its done" than it was having the guys shoot. I have volunteered helping disabled veterans shoot and it was about them shooting , not me. We hardly shot at all.

I certainly would be happy if this show was not renewed.

Check out this link for an idea of what real 1866s go for.

The "people" going into Gunsmoke obviously have not heard of the internet or know how to use it.

$18-20K for mostly made of Uberti parts anyway.I'm pretty sure they didn't make any of the other parts. The link was too short???,why didn't they check the head space???You could buy 20 Italian made 1866s,but I really don't believe any of the prices they state on that show and most others when it comes to firearms.

link works, but try cut and pasting link. That website shows model 2 and 4 1866s going for $12,000 and none of them had octagonal barrels...

I believe the "link was too short" comment was directed towards the show not the link you put up skiwi. The linkage that operated the bolt was a hair too short and they had blowby.

Yes skiwi and those are ORIGINAL collectible 1866's for well less that that absurd price he quoted.

Hard to justify taking two Commemoratives out to shoot when they may have been Unfired!

No disclosure that there is no market for 2011 NC marchined collector rifles...is there?

Five firearms of that tableload were worth a 20% profit over the whole price.

Ranger 30-06, I wish you had copied and Pasted your post to him on Facebook as well as his nasty response. Would have been a nice insight to the real person.

IIRC this morning I was reading rich's facebook page and he said something about people being banned from posting on his page if they make idiotic comments and try and start trouble. I bet it was about 30.06 response. I LOVE IT.

FWIW, I have a relative who works in the post-shooting (final editing and assembly) phase of another 'reality' show. At a company which produces a number of these type shows, and aways having a few in the pipeline. Turns out that none of them are real at all. Staged scenes, either actors or directed characters in each scene. Totally made up story lines.
And, though there may be exceptions, we've been informed that this is the model for virtually all of these type of shows.
So, whatever list of attributes are ascribed to all that are in this show - either weekly or a single appearance, they are actors as well.

Actually I had copied it down in Microsoft office but I wasn't sure if anyone here cared. Here was the conversation:

My initial post:

Here are some thoughts on your show from a lot of people that actually know about guns:
(Link to this thread)

His response:

Hey jack***, this isn't a trolling page, and I know how the H*** to run a business. I pay people fairly for their guns and only charge what I need to make a little profit on the guns I make.

My response:

Oh yea I know how hard running the lowest rated gun store in Colorado can be, how you treat your gunsmiths like crap, and charge thousands for guns that I could get for 1/3 of what you charge. Ever hear the phrase "A fool and his money are soon parted?" C'mon dude. The shooting community isn't completely made up of idiots. You just managed to find the ones that are idiots.

His response:

F*** off.

About 10 minutes later the post wasn't there so it's safe to assume that he deleted it. The funny part though is about 15 minutes after I made my initial post, another dope posted: "Oh Rich, isn't it amazing how people question your great knowledge? As if you haven't been around the block a few times..." Yes, I guess people really are that stupid...

I'm guessing The Discovery Channel has a Facebook and other social media accounts. If people posting to this thread do, then try posting this thread so they can see our opinion and reaction to this show.

Just posted to his facebook account asking who made the barrel and all the internal parts for that gun. I also asked if any competent gunsmith would ever fire a gun without looking at least cursorily at the headspace (and if they did it just for the show). I also asked if making a receiver with a computer and slapping together a bunch of foreign parts and representing it the way they did was fraud.

He deleted my comment in less than 3 minutes!

These people are con artists...

everyone should do the same as idcurrie
:neener:

If Rich was a stand up guy and could accept a ribbing, he would explain on his Facebook, that it is the writers, producers and directors of the show that come up with the craziness.

I guess he is thinks that "any publicity is good publicity"
