Okay, with all the questions on what you carry...revolver, auto, single-stack, double-stack, etc. Are there other people out there that rotate through several carry guns? I don't know about others, but I don't own a gun that I don't know intimately...how to cycle, how to load, how to switch to "fire", how it points, how the grip feels, etc....even in the dark. I can even tell which pistol I have in my hand without seeing it before I pick it up and I can tell whether the magazine is loaded or not(the difference between empty and full). So, that being said, I switch pistols quite often depending on my mood and what I'm going to be doing. Nighttime, grab one with night sights or white dot...going to be around the lake or it's raining, grab a stainless model...etc. For the past week I carried a stainless 92 back and forth to work because it had already had 50 rounds through it, so if I had to use it then it already needed to be cleaned anyway. Tonight I was going to be at a picnic until after dark, so I grabbed a CX4 with night sights. If there had been time to go on a bike ride after work, I would have carried a stainless .380 that is highly visible so cars think twice about bumping you off the road. Do others do this, or do you generally just carry the same 1 or 2 weapons?

I don't rotate just for fun, but depending mostly on my dress. I have, in size order, an LCP .380, a j-frame scandium 357, and a 9mm Glock 26. I also have a fullsize Taurus PT92, but I've never carried it. Listing the same three in carry frequency order - j-frame=80%, LCP=15%, Glock 26 10% (yes they add up to over 100, every once in a while I have more than one on me...

I'm not sure that "rotate" is the right word but I switch back and forth between a CZ75B and a CZ 2075 RAMI which are like full size and (sub?) compact versions of the same pistol. and I carry both decocked so it's pull point and shoot either way.

I base this on an experience I had once after getting pulled over by a Deaf Cop.

Seriously when I first started carrying I carried a .32 Llama W/ an empty chamber. one one morning I had an incident that made me draw. in the stress of the moment I forgot that the pistol that I was intimately familiar W/ was essentially unloaded. stress makes you do weird things some times KISS

I don't rotate, but I do switch fairly often. If I didn't have to work a job I'd always carry my biggest .45 acp, but because I have a job that isn't possible.

I prefer .45 acp so I have a number of types and styles. If I'm looking to conceal in light clothes it will be one of the compacts.

If I can wear heavier clothes I'll carry a mid- to full-size.

Like you, I can tell which one is which by feel and I can tell if its loaded by feel.

Bottom line on which one I'll carry on any given day is what size I want and what is already loaded and if I have a spare mag loaded and readily accessible. More often than not single stack or double stack depends on the mag pouch that's already on my belt. I tend to lean toward double stacks because I have a double stack pouch that has a pocket for a Surefire flashlight. And with the double stacks I can carry more ammo with one spare than with two spare singles.

Regardless of what the carry du jour is, there is a KelTec P32 in my pocket.

First rule of gunfighting: bring a gun.

Second rule: bring lots of ammo.

Third rule: bring another gun.

I will occasionally switch from one 1911 to another, but all of them that I may carry are set up exactly the same, so there is no real difference. The only other gun I carry is my 637, and it only gets carried if an ankle gun is all I can conceal.

All of my carry guns are single stack in either 9mm or .45acp. What i carry depends on dress code of the day.

I switch, depending on mode of dress and what I'm doing. My general rule is the largest handgun that I can conceal under that day's circumstances.

Daily carry for Spring/Summer is usually a m60 .357, a Sig 232, or Glock 27. These ride in either an ankle holster, or two different pocket holsters. It depends on whether I have to wear a suit that day, or if I'm just wearing Dockers or something. The Sig gets the most duty these days.

Hog hunting or something along those lines, I'm going to carry something quite a bit bigger as a sidearm. Usually the m66 .357, a USP .40, or Glock .45on a belt holster.

I understand and fully believe that one shoud carry one gun that is intimately familiar to them. Practice and familiarity makes perfect. However, one gun doesn't cover all the bases for me, especially in a state with as screwy a weather as Texas. Clothing choices that day dictate what I can carry.

I also believe that I'm familiar enough with what I carry to be competent with it. Everything that I carry I can shoot well enough to qualify with for a CHL. Everything I carry I practice clearing jams, reloading, But I won't leave the house with anything I don't know that I can shoot and handle well. That's not saying a whole lot, granted, but it's better than nothing.

I think it's a moral obligation to society at large to be at least as competent as most LEO's with our choice of concealed carry weapon. Ideally, we won't settle for that and aim to be a whole lot better.

If concealing them wasn't such a problem, I think I would prefer to carry a Sig 229 or Commander-size 1911. Those are my favorite shooters.

Besides that, most of my guns are shooters. What's the point of owning them if we can't get some use out of them....:p

Own many,...dozen or so,...Revolvers AND semi-auto,....each has there place and function. With over 40 years experience,...I carry them all at different times. From a Keltec P3AT up to a Ruger SBH ....the situation dictates what I carry when and where,...as well as how. Like the OP, I am comfortable with all of them, and always aware of what I have on. There's never a question of what I pick up,...or the tactics I would use with it if need be. The old saying,.... "Beware of the man with one gun,..." surely fits, and I would never argue that point. But I would also add ..."Beware of the man with many,... who knows well how to use them all."

Not sure if I would call it "rotation" but I do carry a few different guns. I do stick to only "pull and pull" designs as I never have to worry about disengaging a manual safety in the heat of the moment. Yes, I am aware that taking a safety off can be made an automatic thing with training. But, automatic or not, it IS one more thing to do when I just want it to go bang. I grew up on 1911s and I still have them, love them and shoot them, but I carry stuff that has that one less step, not so much for speed but for sureness.

If you have never forgotten your car was running and turned the key, or never forgotten to turn on your turn signal or missed a shift or anything else in the vehicle that you use so much more than you use a gun, you are blessed and should ignore me. But if you have occasional lapses like the rest of us, removing one step requiring any level of response or memory makes sense if your life depends on it. Wow, that got wordy, sorry guys! :uhoh: Back to the question. I tend to move between the various Glocks and Smith revolvers these days. I also use Sigs and they work well too.

Summer time = LCP w/ DeSantis Nemesis

I call BS - you can't have had your LCP during a summer yet! ;) :neener:

BTW, I have the same setup, and yes, if it keeps being as reliable as it has, it will definitely see some work when it gets warm...

Best,
FT

Switcheroo

I am one who switches alot. I use a 5 shot .38 Special, either a SMITH & WESSON or a CHARTER ARMS when I am trying not to look like I have a gun. If I am being more obvious, I carry a SMITH & WESSON model 12 with a 2 inch barrel and square butt. For duty, I do not have a choice and carry an H&K P2000 in .40 caliber.

When it cools down in Florida, I will wear either a BERETTA 92 Centurion or 92FCM (single stack) or a WALTHER P-99. All in 9m.m.

Jim

It all depends on the weather and what I will be wearing. I have 15 guns on my permit currently but in all fairness 9 of them are various 1911's in different barrel lengths.

+1 on what WoofersInc said...depends on the 'heat day/night' etc.I have 12 on my permit..,and I do switch on the need for day/night....work...out on the town, etc.Today we had a little desert/summer rain...I am carrying the XD-compact .45,tomorrow probably the Slimhawg...

I rotate betweena S&W 442, 642, Glock 26 and Kimber Ultra.

It really depends on the time of year and dress.

I switch mainly for dress or activity. I the summer my J frames pull most of teh duty. In the winter I can wear heavy shirts untucked and then the P220 or CZ 40B get carried. When I hike my ruger security six snubbie is with me 100% of the time no matter what the season.

I always pocket carry. For most pockets either a Kahr PM9 or S&W 642. Little pockets I go Kel-Tec P3AT. If I'm wearing my shorts with big pockets I carry my Taurus PT145 .45 with 185gr Double Tap ammo :D. Woe to the bad guy who messes with me then.

I go for as much firepower as the situation allows.

Lou

I will occasionally switch from one 1911 to another,

Ditto, tho not often & when I carry a BUG it's always the same . . . familiarity breeds, well, familiarity . . .

While I agree that there are different guns for different needs, you should look at SD guns and preparedness this way:

Say you spend 200 hours a year practicing with handguns (roughly 4 hours a week). Would you rather have 200 hours of practiced skills with just one primary gun, or if you rotated between 5 guns, you'd have only 40 hours on each gun? What if you only spent 1/2 that time, or 1/4 the hours?

Seems to me there's a huge difference.

While I don't rotate, I carry whatever pistol accommodates my clothing and weather, which, of course, go hand in hand. I have also carried a specific pistol depending on my activity. For instance, I carried a Glock 19 last year for an overnight fishing trip at a lake with a campground in which we slept in a camp trailer. I needed something light and corrosion resistant with night sights since it was mega dark. This was before I stepped up to larger calibers, which I now have.

I try to carry a Sig P229 .40 as much and as often as I can. I do, however, switch to a S&W 642 for summer carry in cargo shorts if I can't comfortably carry my P229.

As for most of my pistols, they are, with the exception of my two Kimber 1911's, without an external safety, and similar in size. I have no plans to purchase another pistol with an external safety anytime soon.
