Disney World and CCW

Nightwolfe,

If it wasn't for "stupid tourists" there would be no Orlando. It would still be a swamp in the middle of nowhere.

Did I ever feel a need for my CCW while in the park. No, but one never knows. However, you encourage me to use public transport to get to the parks. You bet your bottom dollar that I see a need to carry in those circumstances.

Remember just after Florida enacted a CCW? If I remember correctly, "stupid tourists" were being targeted by criminals specifically due to the fact that the bad guys didn't want to tangle with armed Floridians, but saw unarmed "stupid tourists" as an easy mark. As a result, Florida did two things: 1) made it illegal for rental car companies to mark their cars, and 2) enacted non-resident CCW.

Now, as a "stupid tourist" who uses public transportation, and who spends large amounts of my hard earned cash in your state, I am very happy that I am allowed to carry.

Sistema what yopur talking about is what was happening down in Miami years ago when tourists were driving into the middle of the ghettos due lack of decent signs pointing toursits to the beach and airport areas .. and the crimes that came from folks being yanked out of rental cars and being attack was also happening in the Miami area ...

I knew this is exactly the response I was going to get and thats just fine .. unless you live here you just don't get it .. I really love how everyone thinks that since tourism is what drives FL economy that FL residents actually like the tourists .. remember you don't have to like someone to take their money ...

and to the poster that asked me if I'm actually from here yes I am .. I am a FL cracker .. lived here my whole life but have traveled quite a bit as well .. I'm not a transplanted yankee .. I really don't care for the NE at all nor can I see myself ever living there ...

and to the person talking about having to go to 5 or so places and not carrying because 1 doesn't want you to you shouldn't carry .. what happens when you have to goto a couple different places and 1 is a post office and 1 is a court house where you can't carry period .. what do you do then ? leave it in the car ? or do you just not carry that day ? or do you just make no other stops ? but then you won't have it with you while your driving ...

you all are entitled to your opinions as I am mine .. you don't like my take on it oh well .. just please don't be so naive thinking that because tourism drives FL economy that we all love the tourists ...

Thats absolutely right. And if it wasn't for WDW, then crybabies who don't like tourists probably wouldn't be living in Florida anyway... they would have had to move elsewhere to find work.

I don't understand why someone who hates their current residence would want to stay there, but some people just can't even figure out the basics I guess.

like I said ya'll just don't get it .. I love this part of FL .. it's great .. about 99% of the tourists just annoy me as they do with alot of other people around here .. and there aren't tourists everywhere you go .. they stay in their little areas it's just when you have to venture into those areas it sucks .. I don't even know why I'm answering this .. you folks just don't understand and never will .. forget it I'm done with this thread ...

Gee, and I thought I was acting like a bigot for not wanting to venture into the "dark" areas of town.

Seriously, I was just in Florida a few months ago for vacation and the people there were nothing short of very friendly. Sure, like any family vacationing there we did the theme-park thing and had a rental car and used public transport when available. However, we did take a road trip from Kissimmee to Tyndall AFB (to visit my brother), which was a 7 hour trip for us. Not once did we run into any "angry Floridians" who were pissed at native Californians in a rental car.

Reminds me of that Family Guy episode where Peter was angry at all the New Yorkers who ventured to Rhode Island to see the leaves change color. Sheesh.

There are many news references to testing the use of metal detectors at WDW. I have no personal knowledge of this but see some of the links below. I don't know anybody there so I can only go on what I've read.

The Orlando Sentinel had a piece as well but its now off line

Has anybody been to Disneyland in California recently? I'm going in a month and I wonder if they are currently using any metal detectors or wands.

I spend time in Fl in Naples several times a year and always leave my gun locked in the trunk once I get there. On the way down, the minute I hit the first rest area in Georgia I pop the trunk and put on my Gun. The reason is I drive straight through and it is usually night time. Once I hit the parking lot of the condo the gun goes back into the trunk. I feel safe walking and driving in Naples so feel no need to carry. I have been to Disney World and as others have stated also feel very safe inside the park. I have never gotten the urge to carry a weapon. Once outside the Disney property that is another issue. When I go I do stay inside the property. I don't stop anywhere my Pa. permit isn't honored. So NC., Ga. and Fl. get my money when it comes to food and fuel.

Then, I guess that you won't mind if a few of them are in my field of fire if I ever have to use my CCW!

Gee, for all those many times I go to the courthouse, what ever will I do??

The post office? I hardly have much occasion to go there either.

The Post Office's rules are stupid and cannot possibly save lives, and are just as impossible for them to enforce as The Sports Authority's rule is for it to enforce. No further comment.

You seem to be unwilling to accept what we are saying. One stupid place saying they won't allow guns can disrupt our everyday routine, for no viable and justifiable reason. So I either say F-you to their policy or I won't go there, but I will never leave my gun in my car for someone to steal just so I can shop in a store run by unenlightened idiots who buy the "gun free zone" crap.

As far as safety goes in and around the Disney parks. I stayed in a pretty nice hotel near IH4 in Kissimee. Just a few blocks away Kisimmee turns kind of seedy. There are pockets of nice stores interspersed with XXX palaces and roach motels. I felt safer carrying when traveling in and around these areas.

I did not feel particularly unsafe in the parks or resort areas but there were dark unsecured parking lots on the way to and from some attractions.

Now that they serve alcohol in most of the parks and let you walk around with it there is additional reason to be armed.

It's been a while but at the time they were just using the wands and searching bags.

I was there in October (2004). No metal detectors, no wands, just a quick look in bags. On body concealed carry would not be noticed. Getting a Califonia CCW, may be another issue, however.

I was there (Orlando) a couple of years ago, after 9/11, and had to pass through these "gates" after a cursory search. I assumed the "gates" were metal detectors. They didn't wand me.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I always leave my gun in my car there. I get tired/sweaty enough carrying my kids around.

Thank you Henry, I appreciate the information.

A question, perhaps slightly off the original topic, but on par with the way it has turned...Do the majority of members here carry 24/7? Personally, I make the decision to carry based upon what I am intending to do. Mind you, I know and accept that the BG is not going to schedule his intentions with me in advance, so that I know I will NEED a sidearm that day. however, I believe that there are times/locations/activities I choose to do that do not go hand in hand with a concealed handgun. For instance, I'm trying to take up jogging again (due to my doctor's concerns and a desire to get in shape). I cannot fathom how I would carry a weapon in my inventory while jogging, and frankly I can't imagine how I could do so comfortably. When at an amusement park, my concerns are primarily comfort and minding my children. When it's 90+ degrees, and I'm standing in line at 4:00 getting tired after a long day of rides, etc., I don't think I'd like the weight/hassel of a concealed sidearm. Plus, my wife happens to like water rides. Can't see myself letting a handgun get absolutely soaked and not wanting to properly clean it afterwards. Don't think anyone would take too kindly to me sitting on a bench, field stripping my Glock, and cleaning it.

The decision to carry is a very personal one, and I don't think we should fault someone who chooses not to carry, any more than we would fault someone who chose to carry.

My two cents.

CAS the way I read it is that you are making an educated guess when you might need a gun. I figured that was the way I would carry when I first got my permit. Then the more I thought about it the more I realized that I was only guessing and how bad it would suck to go through all the hoops to get a permit, invest a lot of time to train to be proficient, only to guess wrong.

So I found carry rigs and guns that will allow me to always carry. I'm so used to it that it's not a burden and if I should ever need a gun I'll have it. JM2c no disrespect to your own personal decision.

Wow THR arrogance is thick in this thread. I thought personal attacks were a big no. I also think it is funny how the rules bend once you hit a 100 posts or so. Some people think CCW permits make them all knowing and all powerful. For them the CCW permit is nothing more than a self-image enhancer. A CCW permit means nothing if you let common sense and logic take a hike. Carrying a weapon into family theme park is well stupid. I hope you try and fail to enter the park. I would however feel bad for your kids.

Now on to the high crime rates in Florida remarks. The crime right here is down, way down, but I only know the stats they give me at work. Oh just so you know they do run the wand over the stupid tourist, at their discretion.

You go right ahead carry in Park.
You see when some is caught the Anti-gun people will wave the flags and everyone’s rights will be revised and curtailed. Your right to CCW is a privilege nothing and more, so try not to ruin it for everyone

Well, box box box, here's the deal: It's okay to disagree, as long as it is polite. Attack the argument, not the person, you know?

If you have any questions, feel free to PM a moderator. They're a great bunch, and almost any of them would be glad to explain any rules you have questions about.

And if you find too many THRers' attitudes not to your liking, well, it's a big Internet, right? :)

To answer CAS700850's question, I found it much easier to carry always than to try and guess when I'd need a gun.

I haven't needed one, even once, in over 18 months since I got my permit. I still carry every day.

Oh, and as far as carry methods, I carry a Ruger P95 (a pretty large gun) in a SmartCarry holster, with shorts and a tucked-in t-shirt, all summer long. And, yup, I wore it to an amusement park. No problem at all!

It's not the perfect holster (is there such a beast?), but it's very good for deep cover, expecially in the summer.

I *have* to live here.

I'm damn' near broke *with* tourists. At least without tourists, there'd be more room to walk around.

Bring Back Yellow Fever!

I have a really hard time with the DYs and their otoalgic Midwestern accents.

Yankee go home!

Just for your general information, there have been robberies, assaults and rapes on WDW property, including inside the theme parks. Disney does everything possible to keep that information out of the media because of bad publicity.

Secondly, if you personally feel stupid carrying a CCW in a theme park and decline to do so, why do you feel you should have any say in what others think and do? Sarah Brady thinks it is stupid to allow CCWs anywhere in the US. Should her belief overide your belief?
