I have a Ford F250 4x4 that I've used for years, hunting, camping, bustin' the boonies, etc. I only use it for those activities.

My wife has her own car, and I have my car.

If I were not "into the outdoors," I would not have a pickup.

A VW bus has no where near the payload capacity of a one ton truck. Just because the vehicle weighs over 2,000 lbs does not mean it's a one ton in the sense we're talking about.

My friend, I know quite well what payload is and it has every ounce of 1 ton of payload. I love saying it and proving it http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/stoermer/70ownmanpage57.jpg
BECAUSE PEOPLE REACT EXACTLY AS YOU DO! :) :) :) It's great to take it to Home Depot and load it up with loads that would make a most fullsize trucks (usually 1/2 tonners) shiite on themselves then drive off in my bus! Remember, this was the "fullsize van" of the European market and it was more commercial. Passenger use was an afterthought.

THAT'S RIGHT,BABY, THREE TIMES THE PAYLOAD OF A HUMMER H2!!!! IN A DARN HIPPY VAN!!!!!!!!! And they are pretty good off road. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=55184 Top speed still 65-70. :uhoh:

Besides that, you can get the sunroof model and mount a heavy machine gun on top for tactical use. Could also be a mortar carrier. Fire right out that big 4 x 6 foot sunroof hole!

I guess in addition to the Toyota truck and Subaru envy I admitted earlier, I also must admit that I harbor lust in my heart for old 4Runners, Monteros, Troopers, and ESPECIALLY old Suburbans or Chevy trucks (like 68-72). Basically anything that is very practical for it's platform and gets relatively good mpg. I don't care much about pimpdaddy factor.

I get a kick out of squeezing my pathetic Hyundai Accent (the wife drives the Accord) between the macho trucks at my gun club. I get the last laugh when I pull out my M1 Garand (amongst other delectable/selectable/collectable) weapons and proceed to shoot the @#!* out of targets/gongs/bells on the range. You are not what you drive and you are not your job. Now, having said all that, darn it if those full size American Trucks don't look awesome! I have to get one someday...if to do nothing else than to transport my weapons to the Capial City Rifle and Pistol Club! Hey, I do wear an "Outdoors-man-felt-hat" and I do wear my woodland cammy issued Gor-tex Jacket...so, I at least have the uniform down...hee...hee.

Once upon a time I had an old pickup. I think I actually owned A gun them too.

My last vehicle was a 96 Bronco (full sized 4x4, still in the driveway in hopes of using it for a mountain truck) and my current vehicle is an '06 Crown Vic LX.

Not one but two pickup trucks! One 1984 F250 4X4 for haulin' wood, hay, anything else big I gotta move from point A to point B. One two wheel drive S-10 I inherited from my Dad a bit over a year ago. It's a 1994 that had all of 14,000 miles on it when he died in December of 2005. Great little rig for hauling smaller loads and gets much better fuel mileage than the other one! My daily driver is a 2004 Subaru Impreza AWD. Guns get hauled in all of these vehicles. Indeed...gun challenged folks would likely soil themselves if they knew what I normally carried around with me.

Comments about the advisability of continuously carrying firearms in vehicles not invited. :scrutiny:

I have been a Subaru man for my few years of driving (4 years haha)... but ever since we moved to Oregon and everyone and their mother drives a truck I kind of want one :uhoh:

Plus, I hate having to borrow a family members car to go shooting out in the forest.

Nope, never owned a pickup unless you want to include the CJ5 (Civilian Jeep version of the M38, which was a 1/4 ton truck, very short bed, definitions by the US Army).

I've owned:

Jeep Cherokee, 1985, 2.5l 4cyl 4sp stick shift with about 83hp.

Jeep CJ5, 1976, suped (by me) 304, 3sp stick shift, about 300hp. I beat Z28 Camaros with this thing and never could get it stuck.

I owned a conversion van for a short time. Didn't like it, and sold it.

1989 Chevy S-Blazer, 4wd, 4sp overdrive auto, stock TBI 4.3L @ 150hp.

1993 Olds Bravada, AWD, tow package: posilockers (hybrid), 3.73 gearing, aux coolers for oil and tranny; 4sp overdrive auto, stock CPI 4.3L @ 200hp.

I'm not going any newer than that because I hate the round body styles. I will fix the rust on the Bravada and call it good.

I've owned trucks since '81, but it has nothing to do with guns. I fit in them better than in cars and as a homeowner always need the carrying ability for something.

Yes, I own a bunch of firearms and a 2005 F-250 XLT Crew Cab 4x4. :)

My dad has a 2004 F-150 Lariat Super Crew 4x4 and he owns firearms as well.

Oh, and my best friend has a 2004 Hemi Dodge Ram 4 door 4x4 and a bunch of guns.

My buddy and I take our trucks off-roading and mudding all the time. My dad...not so much. lol

Over the past few days, the percentage of truck-driving shooters has oscillated between 61 and 63 percent.
The poll doesn't say how many shooters drive trucks. It says how many shooters have ever owned a pickup truck in their entire life. Big difference.

You could construct a poll to ask how many people have EVER owned a Chevrolet in their entire life, and get a 61-63 percent response rate as well, but it wouldn't mean that over 60% of respondents drive Chevy's.

I have in the past owned a Pontiac, a Chevrolet, a Chrysler, a Plymouth, a Ford, and a Toyota, but that says nothing about what I drive now.

Ben, don't get your panties in a wad. I'm sorry if my casual remark wasn't carefully worded enough to reflect correctly on this pointless gunboard poll. I'll try again.

61 - 63 percent of usernames on this gun board (which may not have a one-to-one correspondence with actual people and may or may not even own guns and may in fact be thirteen years old) and like to answer polls claimed to have owned a pick-up truck over the course of their lives.

Is that better? :(

Valk, that's a sweet Dodge.

Cass, I think you had something wrong. I usually get 100+ out of my engines in a bus, longer in a bug. Built the last on my kitchen table with a small collection of handtools and plastiguage. There are a few little things (cooling vanes and engine tin and such) that if screwed up, can really fry your engine in short order. You must also adjust the valves regularly (like every oil change) and change the exhaust valves every 50k or so.

vw was fine

it was the 16 year old kid loose between steering wheel and seat that caused all the trouble. i got good at swapping motors did one on the side of a highway outside york pa witha state trooper watching and laughing. 30 mins. you ever light one on fire blowing up a motor? thats memorable! there was a short section of rubber line between the metal fuel lines right above and in front of motor makes a lil fire into a big one when it burns through

i abused her did wheelies at the cost of a tranny and 2 clutches
