Funny what happens, or what might happen, when you help someone move and/or unpack.
A friend from school recently got herself a new house (for rent) and guilted me into helping her yesterday.
As we moved a few things into her bedroom, I noticed a familiar shape on the bed--a rifle case. So, abandoning all poise and tact, my eyes got big and I asked what was in there.
"Huh? Oh. An SKS."
She popped the latches on it and opened it up, and stepped back a bit. After asking (with all the restrain I could muster) if I could check it out, she obliged me. Not too shabby; milled Chinese SKS, bayo removed, and in as good a condition as I've ever seen.
She then asked me if I knew how it worked, as she's never used it before. Apparently, when she moved out, her dad gave her the SKS and a 6"-ish Model 29 for HD. She said she's a good shot with the revo, but in my mind, there's no point in owning a rifle you can't use. So right then and there, I rectified the situation.
I showed her everything I could think of--which ammo that she had was for it (fortunately the only two calibers she had were .38 +P and 7.62x39), how to load a stripper clip properly, the operation of the safety, opening the magazine base to unload the rifle, sight sdjustment (she even had the c-clamp adjuster!), and how to charge the rifle from a stripper clip. Last item took a lot of practice from her, but in no time she had it down pat.
Finally, I ran her through the Four Rules until she could recite them back without assistance. I checked the revolver out, too, using the guide in the revolver section here, and it passed with flying colors. Clean, too.
One of these days, we're scheduled to go shooting, and hopefully she'll be a good shot with the SKS too.
