"Gun logic puts cops at a huge disadvantage"

any pretense that these rifles are about hunting game.Unless the game you're hunting runs with a rival gang.Or someone who shorted you in a drug deal.
Oh, so the only reason to have a Homeland Defense Rifle is to be in a gang or sell drugs? I guess I'm a little behind, better go find some thugs to jump me in. I think I want to be a crip (blue brings out my eyes.)

stray bullets from the killing burst of rifle fire in North Miami Beach blasted through a window of a seventh-story condo located four blocks from the shooting scene and tore into a couch.Thankfully,at 1 a.m.,the couch was empty.
Thankfully? Admit it Mr. Grimm, you would have been delighted if that couch had been stacked two deep in newborn babies, it would have added so much hysteria to an otherwise toothless article.

"Like butter,"suggested another officer.
I'm all verklempt. Talk amongst yourselves... the subject is yellow journalism

Okay I'm going to pipe up. I'm from West Virginia so the hillbilly thing sorta got to me for a second.
Anyhow, the media knows darn well all of its facts, but thats not what sells papers or makes people watch the darn news. House wifes and soccor moms need some mysterious bad guy to fear some strange unexplicable terror...enter the assault rifle/weapon. Its far removed from grandpa's hunting weapons or so the little voice in their head says...its capable of spraying millions of "smart" rounds that hit sleeping children due to their evil intent. Its demonizing sheer and simple and we'll never see the end of it. The old folks had communists, the last gen had guns, and I'm sure the next will have muslims.

It's not me. Fred proudly has proclaimed himself as a WV hillbilly all his years at the Herald.
My best friend from the Army is a proud Mountaineer from Princeton who ,after 42 years I still am in contact with.
So please understand nothing derogatory was intended.
Peace,Winchester.

The ban on shooting police officers didn't prevent this from happening. Why should we expect a ban on "assault weapons" would?

You mean there is a ban on shooting cops? Surely that cannot be so, they seem to get shot (or at least shot at) fairly often. No, in fact, you are wrong. There is no such thing as a ban on shooting cops. Ah, epiphany! We need to ban shooting cops! Dough! Right in front of our faces. Ban cop shooting! That would fix everything...wouldn't it?

Actually, the scary thing is this guy supports the AWB and laments its passing. Beyond the obvious flaws in his logic about availability, the thing that really bugs me is that he says cops are now at a disadvantage. This is untrue because it means that civilians can have the same things as police officers. But under the AWB, as it was designed, the police were given all the advantage. They could have full-size autos with full-capacity magazines while the citizens were limited to ten rounds. The idea was to make the police better armed than the populace.

So the civilians don't need that Ruger GB with flash hider, bayo lug, and high-cap magazine. But, the police need a bayonet? Does he REALLY want the police to be the only ones so armed? Police, like at Rodney King, Selma AL? Does he think the government should be the only ones armed? The government like at Kent State? (I use the examples because they are the ones that lefties really get hot over, Ruby Ridge and Waco don't bother them).

Whats also scary is this sad sack has been grinding out his hackneyed prose for 20 years on the Herald's dime.As .cheese pointed out the Herald local columnists are without exception a pack of talentless lefties.
In an area like South Florida which has a fairly large Conservative presence(think hundreds of thousands of Cubans for starters)the Herald refuses to feature one local columnist who swings from the right.

Same old crap different pile.

... there were no "assault weapons" available anywhere during the ban. Criminals had to resort to throwing rocks to kill cops between '94-'04.

Again I must blame the "system", I am sure this guy and most others who committ murder, have long arrest records. Why and how do they "our judicial system", let these guys out time after time for multiple assaults, rapes, weapons possesion, and countless other felonies. We need tougher enforcement. Criminals don't give a crap about laws, that's rediculous. Only the citzen who is a law abiding product of the community suffers not the perp, they must get a kick out of these bans we should send the newspaper a petition, and forward it to all these folks, who don't get it. It's like telling them they can't vote, as if they ever did before.

Dorryn : Not very high road.

Instead of attempting to moderate what I have to say when you're in no position to do so, why don't you just comment on the topic yourself.

Time was, before gun logic ruled,a street thug, even one named Shooter, wouldn't have been so well armed.

Time was, before logic was abandoned, a street thug would be hung in the town square before he could develop a reputation such as "Shooter."

Browning: Instead of attempting to moderate what I have to say when you're in no position to do so, why don't you just comment on the topic yourself.

Im in a position to remind you what board youre on, and calling anyone a "retard" is offensive.

"Gun logic won't dwell much on Detective James Walker, killed in a burst of bullets fired from a military assault weapon that,in saner times, had been banned."

I didn't get beyond that. Starting an article with incrroct info, ended my interest to read more. So much for any fact checking at that news paper...

I sent this to the Herald email and Mr Grimm:

Mr. Grimm, and to whom it may concern at The Miami Herald Editorial department. I have the distinct impression you will be getting many responses similar to this regarding the opinion piece on “gun logic.”

In addition to expecting the author of such an article to fact check, I expect the publication that prints it to fact check. I can see that concept slipped by you all. As a professional writer myself, I always expect the publications I writer for to check on any bold statements of fact I make and or ask for a citation of support for those claims. Right from the very first sentenced by Mr. Grimm, did I know this writer had done essential no research on the topic nor check his facts. For example:

“Gun logic won't dwell much on Detective James Walker, killed in a burst of bullets fired from a military assault weapon that, in saner times, had been banned.”

The article only gets worse from there. The AK47 was never banned, we both know the Dept of Justice own study found the supposed “ban” on some guns had no effects on crime rates, etc, etc,.

Again, I am sure a bunch of emails correcting the many mistakes in Mr. Grimm's article is already hitting your in box as we speak, so I will not bother. It appears objective journalism and intellectual honesty are all but dead at the America's news papers, and that is one of many reasons news paper sales are declining.

Mr. Grimm should be forced to write a retraction and The Herald should be held accountable for a total failure to fact check and or at least offer another author to write a counterpoint to this sad piece of “journalism.” I doubt very much you have the integrity for such things as your agenda appears to overshadow the facts.

Better title: "Logic Puts Me At A Huge Disadvantage" by Fred Grimm
:D Awesome!

Seriously though, it was a good time during the AWB when criminals everywhere were forced to break the law in order to get these dangerous guns. :banghead:

I forgot to say this. Thanks for getting my back.
