How much ammo?
How much is enough? How much is too much? Is there such a thing as too much? Enough is what you want. Too much is hard to define, but I think it would start when there is no room for anything else.
Last inventory, a couple of years back, 23,000+ (I got tired of counting!
).
This covers 23 different calibers. My personal standard is 100rnds per gun. Of course, in some calibers I have LOTS more. Plus components for nearly as much again.
About a year ago I threw my back out, moving a box of ammo! Serious lesson! After a few months of disability, I have repackaged nearly all of it into 50cal ammo cans, which I can move without injury. Nothing like a crippling injury to tell you when you are getting old.
Considering that the shelf life on properly stored ammo is around a century (maybe more), it don't go bad. So stocking up makes excellent sense. There is no telling when you won't be able to get more.
A problem with the economy, natural disaster, or just a govt order "temporarily" suspending the sale of guns and ammo "for the duration of the emergency" is not as farfetched as some people think.
Always have some ammo in calibers you don't have guns for. It is "tradin' stock". Other than food, ammo is one thing somebody will always want.
Back in the 70s, when "Survivalism" was a big thing for many people, one of the gun mags ran a story that I kind of figured was on the money. In an untimate SHTF scenario;
Survivor #1: Hey Mr Farmer, what will you take for one of those chickens?
Farmer: Whaddya got?
Survivor#1: I got gold! Krugeraands!
Farmer: (pauses) Well,...tell you what, you gimme a couple dozen of them shiny things, and I'll let you have a chicken.
Survivor#1: Are you nuts? These are Krugeraands! Each one is an ounce of gold!
Farmer: Jus' consider 'em expensive chickens!
Survivor#2: Hey, Mr Farmer, what will you take for some of them chickens?
Farmer: Whaddya got?
Survivor#2: I got half a box of shells that fit your old Winchester.
Farmer: How many chickens you want?
Gold and gems are fine investments when you paper currency isn't worth much, but ammo has value when your gold isn't worth much!
