How open are you at work?

My co workers know

I think I have been voted "the most likely to come in and shoot everyone"
which is a shame. We can't have guns even in our parking lot. There are a good many hunters here, only a few shooters.

I bring my old gun mags and the NRA mag and leave them in the breakroom for interested people to read. I have a standing invitation for anyone who wishes to come shooting with me. First timers all ammo is free and I'll even load all the magazines!

I don't go on about gun control. If asked I'll just say that shooting is a lot of fun and the person should be blamed not the object. It is liberal here (Ned Lamont, anyone?) and I know a guy from California who says our laws are worse than theirs.

The folks all know

I am pretty open at work, but then again I am the only one in my office that doesn't come to work in BDUs.
I am the jet engine manager at a major air force base and am retired Air Force myself.

I'm relatively open about it at work, but possession on work property is prohibited. I seriously doubt it would be OK for me to have ammunition (even inert) on my desk.

Reminds me of a story from work.

Years ago, when it was still ok to smoke inside, I was a pipe smoker. The company I work for has a "no guns or ammo at work" rule, which I don't have a problem with. Their property, they sign the checks. They get to make the rules.

Anyway, I had made a pipe tamper out of a fired 30/30 case. I just resized the cartridge case, and seated a bullet in it. I pulled it out one day during a meeting, and tamped my pipe with it, and layed it on the table next to my tobacco pouch and lighter. The area boss, noticed it, and during one of the breaks, picked it up, turned it over, and saw the indented primer. He laughed, winked at me, and layed it back down.

I am the jet engine manager at a major air force base and am retired Air Force myself.
When I was XO of a Basic Training company at Ft. Knox, the XO of the company next door was anti-gun. His company commander and I asked why he didn't like guns. He said, "Because they kill people."

I did a double take and asked him, "What branch are you?"

"Field Artillery."

"What branch kills the most people on the battlefield?"

"...Field Artillery."

"So, can you explain to me how it is, that belonging to the branch which routinely slaughters the most human beings on any battlefield where it's present, you don't like handguns 'because they kill people'?"

"No..."

For this job I intended to lay low on gun subjects.
Then the company gun nut found out I've been to LFI.
Having adjacent cubes, he frequently pops in to revel in his latest gun-related purchase, modification, hope, match, quandry, etc.
Can't avoid it; I've been outed.

Being a no-gun company (as most software engineering jobs are in), in-building carry is verboten, and carry therein is much more likely to cause me harm (to wit: unemployment) than not carry (crazed office shootups are, practically speaking, extremely rare and few actually get hurt).

I try to not flaunt my gun interests, but as it's unavoidable (per co-worker) I do try to find out who else is so interested (a good number).

I'm open about it at work. There is usually a copy of some gun rag on my desk. Not too many of my coworkers are into guns. A few hunters but that's it. I've invited several to the range to see what it's all about. Only one taker so far. He ended up buying the pistol we were shooting from me.

The only problem I have is with one guy. He's a mechanical contractor that does a lot of work for us. He collects M1 Garands and '03s. He'll show up feeling chatty, and I end up blowing half the day getting nothing done. Then I'm in on Saturday trying to catch up when I could be at the range!

As I sit here and not working when I should :uhoh: , a couple of my bosses are looking at their hunting rifles and talking firearms and hunting in general in the back room.

My co-workers know that I have a C&R, a CCW (from multiple states), that I had just recently bought an AR and that if I had the money I would get an NFA type weapon.

So I guess you can say that in my work environment, we are very open :)

Can't carry at work. They can only charge me with trespassing if I do, but they can also fire me. This close to retirement, I can't have that. But I will hold the company personally responsible if I am ever held up in the parking lot. That is, if I am alive enough to call my lawyer.

I keep asking if I can put a Skeet/Clays stand on the roof!

That, sir, is an idea I can fully support!

How open am I about my hobby at work?

Well, my pay-the-bills job is as a chef. Most everyone knows I'm into guns, because they know of my other two jobs. My part-time job is teaching TN Handgun Carry Permit classes for a local gunshop / range. I am the owner/president of a suppressor manufacturing company, as well. I'd say the last two most definitely scream "Hey, I like guns!"

I aint nothing but a simple man....

...they call me a redneck, I reckon that I am... :D

I am pretty open with the people at work I know who shoot -- which, for that matter, is a pretty low number, maybe two or three. Better that than none, though! I went shooting with one of my co-workers last night, as a matter of fact. I am sure there are more, though; I just found out about the ones who do like to shoot, by accident, more or less. Every now and then I bring it up in conversation, though, with non-gunnies, and it never seems to be that big of a deal.

Everyone I worked with target shot, hunted or owned a firearm so we were open in talk and discussions. Funny since Leon Co. FL is the most blue county in the state. Well, I'm sort of glad the run of the mill liberal is anti-gun since they become the most out of control in any political discussion and are probably the most likely to shoot you if they had one.

Hence the reason that they are anti-gun. I've noticed liberals tend to believe EVERYBODY is a liberal (especially in my line of work) and that EVERYBODY is incapable of controlling their anger (so guns must be controlled). "How could Nixon have won? I don't know a single person who voted for him!" -Pauline Kael, 1972 (according to Bernard Goldberg) :banghead:

By the way, welcome to THR, aka108!

Don't ask, don't tell. Some things are meant to be private.

Sure, some things. When it comes to sexual proclivities, personal finances, or some medical issues; I don't feel the need to share or the desire to hear about it from others.

But why would your hobby be a taboo subject? I'm no more ashamed of my enjoyment of guns and shooting than I would be ashamed of stamp collecting or restoring old cars. Why miss out on some enjoyable conversation if it turns out a coworker shares some interests with you?

It's your choice of course, just seems odd.

I work as a security officer and I am issued a .357 Magnum as part of my equiptment. Most of my co-workers are also gun owners.

This is great. I work for an extremely multicultural company, here in Houston and the great majority of my fellow employees are French expats!

Nearly everybody knows I have a deer lease, and a lot of guns. Only a few know about my TX-CHL. I think I'm a pretty good advertisement for the gun culture, as I am known to never lose my cool, and folks think of me as a kindly, friendly avuncular type. I am older by far than all of my colleagues, most of them are young PhDs or MSc's from Europe.

And I have a mainland Chinese guy, a Nigerian, and a Russian who want to go shooting with me, which I am planning to arrange soon.

I do not carry in the office itself, although there is no stated company policy or signage on the office, building, or parking garage. A few people have seen long guns in my vehicle during the hunting season. I do leave my carry piece in the vehicle when I go into the office. To quote the great Massad Ayoob, "Don't scare the horses". They are just getting used to the fact that my pockets are full of stuff like my pocket knife, OC spray, Leatherman Micro, E2D flashlight ("No, that's not my gun, I'm just happy to see you..."..."Why do I carry a flashlight? Another intelligence test, right? Umm, so I can see in the dark?").

I work at a law center. Im very open.

I carry to work......I will bring a new gun for everyone to check out and they do the same.

I will bring a gun in, with ammo to give someone to try out on the range. We will shoot on the range before or after work......or during if we are lucky enough.

What new guns you got?....are almost the first words out of someones mouth after the weekend is over.

I try not to disappoint them.......must buy cool guns. :)

Here at my new office everyone open carrys; Berettas, Remington 870's, M16's, M249 SAW's. Whats really interesting is that there are no problems whatsoever with every person being armed.

The owner of the co I work for has guns .I took him to a full auto shoot .He told me to carry at work . so no problem here. Not sure if anyone else here carrys there is about 350 people working here , security is unarmed. I know there are some who keep them in their vehicles.

I regularly debate different carry guns and loads with my customers. Occasionally there is some show and tell--then again, I have kind of an odd job.

How open can I be? I work by myself and all I do is photograph guns and knives. If someone comes in it's like they have walked into an armory.

Dammit Marine, thanks for making me miss the good ole' days :neener:

I talk about guns all the time at work, its my hobby, I'm passionate about it. I'm not ashamed to talk about my interest in guns, I really dont care what others think. On occasion I'll get the remark "I dont like guns". Thats just a general emotional statement with no fact to back it up. I'll interject a couple of facts pertaining to guns and it will get them thinking, "hey this guy's done his research on this issue". I'm more than happy to discuss the gun issue with anyone, but only on a FACTUAL basis. As soon as emotion comes into it, I'm done! I'm proud of my gun hobby and the guns I own, I'm not ashamed to talk about it, I take pride in it.:D
