Just read about this on a news site.
Current high bid as of this writing is at $99,999,999.00 .
Guess someone is screwing around with the auction?

Taken form the AP:

"The price for the jet, which formerly belonged to the Navy's Blue Angels aerial demonstration team, is just over $1 million on the auction firm eBay, or about $9 million for a buyer who wants it assembled, painted and certified ready-to-fly.

Only legal U.S. residents can bid. The auction is scheduled to end Thursday.

An F/A-18 in 1997 cost the military $28 million, according to the Blue Angels' official Web site."

Hmmm...if this auction is real, I wonder if someone like Mike Dillon will pick it up.
Then again, is'nt this a little bit wrong? What if it was purchased from a law-abiding millionaire/billionaire, stolen somehow, and used in an act of terrorism?
It would be harder to intercept than a commerical airliner.
Ehh...Me and My silly imagination.

Edit: Maybe "24" could use this in a script and only Jack Bauer can stop the jet!!! Dum-dumm-dummm!:D

They also have a MiG29 and a Huey UH1-P and are going to offer a 'never-demilled' F16 'soon'. I bet there are a lot of folks with shiny badges poking around in his paperwork this week. They claim to have already sold a T-33 and T-28, but those are fairly common.

Incredibly low hours on all their stuff...I wonder if someone is missing a jet and a Huey from the Park-N-Lock somewhere?

I could find a use for their towers they have for sale, though.

I'll be very curious to follow these sales.

Regards,
Rabbit.

This stuff isn't SUPPOSSED to be let out of govt control in anything like operable or repairable condition, but I'm sure this is on the up and up. Mistakes do get made and sometimes the gov doesn't follow their own demil rules exactly or something "slips through the cracks" and someone is able to take advantage of a one in a million opportunity. There are two legal F-104's flying, a handful of legal Cobras, and at least one legal F-5 Tiger. With the Cobras, the gov looked into the sale and rebuild, hassled the guy a bit, but finally threw up their hands when they couldn't find anything that the owner did wrong and admitted he could have the copters and that they were flight certifiable. I believe they then tightened their controls of surplus property to try to keep the same thing from happening again. I'll be the same thing will happen here.

Of course, this is going to bring up the old F18 vs. F15 debate -- almost as old as 9mm vs. 45, S&W vs. Ruger or Remington vs. Mossberg.

I doubt it will come to that.

Besides, everyone KNOWS who's the best....

A personal Cobra...heh..heh....

Could you imagine: Doorbell rings, you head out to the back yard and fire up the Cobra....swing over the roof and announce over a loud speaker, "Can't you read the sign that says NO SOLICITING?"

How about Halloween:evil: ?

Yeah it was on the local news here tonight. We get the Angels out here several times a year so they're really popular in these parts.

But the auction seems to be down as of 4:30 PST

i don't know the status of the airframes at the moment but for a while now there has also been a guy in El Paso, trying to find a way to make an airworthy and certifiable F-106 (for info on the type look HERE ) out of two relatively complete airframes. problem is he was allowed to buy them b/c BOTH airframes have damaged wing spars!

Edited to add that i just checked and it apears that the person doing the restoration IS doing over at least one two seat "B" model. so maybe some day i'll get to ride in one :D
