This may not be in the spirit of the thread but:

1. AR-15 with:
a) .223/5.56 upper
b) .22 lr converison
c) .243 upper
d) 7.62x39 upper
e) .458 socom upper
e) .50 beowulf upper

2. Milspec 1911 in .45 with a .22 lr conversion

3. Remington 870 12 gauge with:
a) 28 inch vent rib barrel
b) 18 inch barrel
c) full set of chokes for a and b
d) 20 inch rifled slug barrel
e) nice walnut stock and forend
f) pistol grip stock/tactical forend

Three receivers with an infinite number of uses.

If I have to be fair, then just a 12 gauge 870 with a 26 inch vent rib, a lever .30-30, and a 1911

Isn't the 243 about the same length as a 308? If so, would it be a single shot upper?

I would be more worried about carrying three calibers.

.223
9mm
.22lr

The ammo will be easy to find if you ever have to scavenge for it.

My how have times changed, in such short order too. I have since sold the M1A rifle and rely mainly on my new Rock River Arms LAR-6 A4 Mid-Length in 6.8spc with an Aimpoint CompC3 on top. I also have a .308 AR but believe the 6.8spc would be much more versatile, let alone smaller, lighter and overall handier.
I would still choose the Glock 21, but for the third choice I still think a .22lr rifle would be a better choice than the old trusty 870 shotgun.

Ironclad, sounds like you've been thinking about this for a while

Haha not really. But that's what I would get if I was only constrained by number of guns. In reality I'm constrained by cost, so my list is much closer to the short list at the bottom.

Sorry that should be a .243 wssm upper

If I Could Only Have 3 Guns! Hmmmm!

I would find somewhere else to live!

Just Kidding! .... NO Not Really!

But For Fun:

1) Marlin 30-30
2) 22 Rifle Mag or LR?
3) Beretta 9mm or 1911 45

Oh Drats! need my shotgun! I dont wanna play no more! :uhoh:

Live or die guns:

1. XD 40 S&W
2. 870 Express
3. AR-15

Is there really anything else?

The question is non detailed, therefore it allows for many possible answers. But in general, a 30-06 simi auto with hi rise scope, to allow for open sight close range shots. The 30-06 is not an amazing gun in any catagagory, but good on many catagories. It has many different grains of bullets available to choose from, you can down load to kill a coyote, or up load to kill a moose. It could serve in a pinch as a combat / defence weapon. 40 cal simi auto hand gun. 40 cal travels faster than 45, it has more penetration than 45 is cheeper than 45 and you get more shots in a clip. Divide by 9, a 40 cal is 8/9ths as big as a 45. A 12 guage pump, chambered in 2-3/4 3" and 3-1/2 magnum. it could be used for birds, rabbits. turkey, deer, boar, and a good close range combat gun. the possibility of a slug adds range possibilities also. A forth choice. would be the humble 22 lr simi auto. Light cheap ammo, Perfect for the smallest game, and with 21 repeating shots it could be used in defence or to down a deer in emergencies.

From a purely practical standpoint:

1. Remington 870 12 ga. shotgun (or any of the variants)

2. A full sized 1911A1 - my personal faves are the Springfield Custom shops, the Rock River Arms versions, and the Les Baer versions.

3. A Winchester 1894 or 94 AE. I prefer the Trappers with their short barrels.
