If you have a firearm, do you need a self-defense knife?

To me a 3" knife is more a tool or basic part of a wardrobe than (outwardly) a weapon. I've had a Buck or at least a decent multitool on my hip as long as I can remember.

Mail, food, cutting a flower for the missus while on a walk, whittlin' on a summer day, penknife tracheotomies (volunteers?)...

Even if you don't think of it as a weapon first and foremost, it's just too often you need one when you don't have it.

Maybe bacause I'm Italian...

My dad (RIP) always had one in his pocket, now I pick mine while dressing each day, based (as are my clothes) on where I'm going. If to court or other restricted entry locale, a Swiss Army "Camper" much more "tool" than "weapon", but I still leave it in the truck. If I'm in the field, working or volunteering, the Gerber folder previously pictured has served for over three years. In the range bag is a Leatherman (with bits) I got for Christmas. When bird hunting a Remington bird knife with it's elegant trim blade, gut hook and choke wrench fill the bill. I know the old saw "don't bring a knife to a gunfight" but I believe it really means "don't bring only a knife to a gunfight". I count the knife first as it is constant, the gun is not....yet.:banghead:
I live in one of two states in the union with no concealed carry!:cuss:
Don't say anthing,,,I'm workin on it!!!

I have several "self-defense knives". I can't carry them concealed in Ohio, so it's a moot point.

The Ohio CHL is just that, a Concealed HANDGUN License, and nothing else.

Defence is not something you will know you'll need until it's time. I've carried a knife since I was twelve years old. I carry it weak side clipped to front pocket. CCW on strong side.
I've been shot and I've been cut. When I think about being shot, It seems just a bad memory but when I think of being sliced I cringe and a cold chill goes down my back. The knife is for if I need it not as a first choice. One thing I was tought is in a knife fight your going to get cut no matter what.
If I need a knife to cut a seat belt or something it work's better that a bullet.

i've been thinking about getting myself a small fixed blade karambit for weak side carry. i had my left hand injured a few years ago and have lost alot of strength in my wrist and coordination in my hand. i like the finger ring better for retention and the fact that it's suited for a slash attacks as i don't feel my wrist is strong enough to for stabs.

Do you really need an airbag if you have seatbelts?

A knife is another tool that can be deployed as a defensive (or offensive :scrutiny:) weapon if needed. They don't have to weigh much to be of good quality, and they can save your life in many non-defensive situations. Why wouldn't you carry one?

I have a very thin flat-sided spring-assisted half-serrated Gerber that's incredibly light. I often wear it IWB with a smaller version of the same knife in my pocket with my change. Both knives were under $50 combined and both get a lot of use (thankfully not as weapons yet).

If you carry a gun you probably carry a spare mag/speedloader right? Well a knife is kind of like that. If your gun jams/breaks/blows up/is taken form you/gets dropped in an altercation your knife is another tool that you can use to defend yourself.

It's also good at opening boxes.

This assumes you have some training with the knife. I for one, have no training on defensive use of a knife other then what I gleamed from the TV show the Best Defense, and I do not feel comfortable using one for self defense.

Your point is valid, but I would go for my gun first. My swiss army knife would come out last :)

I like carrying a versatile knife. I usually carry a Chris Reeve Sebenza, or something similar. It's perfect for slicing some salami, cheese or an apple, and it's good for opening packages.

Um... all of which can be done BETTER with a gun! ;)

But seriously, I wouldn't carry one for defense. Gun and knife are both considered lethal weapons. If I were to carry a secondary I'd like it to be something that expands my options, something nonlethal.

As I'm sure others have said, just carry a knife. ALWAYS. I wasn't even a boy scout, and I know that. :)

Seriously, though. Just always carry a knife.

Seriously, though. Just always carry a knife.

But what type?

I have used my knives countless times for utilitarian purposes. Never for self defense. So, unless I am in my bunker gear (And need to cut a seatbelt...) or water rescue gear (And need to cut rope...) I never just carry a standard, 4" blade.

I like assisted opening folders with at least 3" blades. I've never used one defensively, but they're great tools and are easy to deploy with one hand.

Let's stay on topic, please- the question is whether to carry a knife as well as a firearm, not which knife to carry.

Thanks,

lpl

i carry a knife everyday to "defend myself" from cardboard boxes, zip ties, and other daily hazards. i don't expect to ever use it in any actual self-defense. however, since i cannot carry at work (and thus to or from when taking the bus or my motorcycle), there are times when it might be my only option.

in general it is a tool, not a weapon. but you never know, i guess.

Yes. Airbags are needed for the very reason that many here say a knife is needed, as an additional means of possibly saving your life.

When forces detected by the crash sensor exceed pre-determined values the airbag will activate. If it's not activated, the sensor made a determination that the seatbelt would be adequate protection. (your life is in the hands of a computer). In some new smart systems, if your seat belt's not buckled, the AB will deploy at a lesser energy level by default.

The major difference, of course, is that you make that determination in a SD situation and get to choose your option.

Well I like to have my sig 9mm or my S&W 642 and a gerber fast knive and my gerber para mini along with my buck tool. The knives and buck tool are always with me. one or the other of the firearms.
I would like to see someone shoot the rope thats tied around someones wrist and legs.

Besides general utility a knife is a great tool for handgun retention or in cases where you can't reach your handgun, e.g pinned to ground or wall. Off hand access to a knife can be a lifsaver. I'm always amazed how people talk about physical fitness but balk at carrying a few ounces of gear.

More food for thought, take an old shirt and try ripping off a sleeve, most people can't. Most people don't carry a blow-out kit or turniquet. Part of the utility in self defense is the ability to make one via a field expedient.
