Is your interest in guns just a "bang fetish"

Thanks to all for your considered opinions. I'm just logging on for the day, and have work to do before reading the second half carefully (only scanned them so far), but will do so by evening latest. I'm very interested in learning what you have to say, and advice. It's already clear that I'm not alone in this feeling. -- I'll also later add a few more details for clarity about the situation.

It's sounds to me the term was meant to be offensive.

I personally don't care what other people think about my hobby, especially people that are ignorant about it. I'd have simply avoided further conversation, fortunately I don't have much (if any) contact with people like that.

Never heard the expression "bang fetish" before. Being curious I googled the phrase. WOW. Got a lot of hits but nothing to do with shooting guns. I didn't pursue the subject any farther.

Strikes me as you were insulted.

You have much more tolerance and patience than I do. And I feel sorrow for her partner. At least you can just walk away. She's just another liberal looking to put some spite on a gun owner.

I've heard a lot from gun hating libs, but "bang fetish" is certainly a new one to me!

I'd find her characterization highly insulting and your response wholly appropriate. She warrants only being told how mortifyingly insulting she was and ask how she'd appreciate being attacked as some fetishist perv.

It is obvious to me that this 'lady' got her encouragement from the concept that firearms equate genitalia. She is totally in the wrong here.

That is all I will say about this in order not to be thrown off of the forum.

I adhere to the old adage of not discussing Religion, Politics or Guns at social events.

Yes report/recoil mean something to me (that's why I'm not passionate about bow hunting).

I also avoid trying to explain my passion for hunting to a non-hunter because I doubt they'll ever understand.

I wouldnt pay too much mind to her opinion. Would she be happier of you had a manicure, and enjoyed shopping for clothes?

Maybe from some perspectives it could be called a fetish...
I figure that sending projectiles down range at high velocity and with a high degree of accuracy is a natural and healthy aspect of being a Man.

The first thing I do when asked a leading question to which I have no choice but defend myself is answer/counter with a leading question of my own. Like "Bang fetish??? Why would you think that I have one of those?" or some like comment. They then have to defend their assessment of you rather than you having to be on the offensive. I would have also graciously invited her to the range to see for herself why her fears are so unfounded. BUT not explained to her that way however.;)

FWIW I have an acquaintance that sees no need for "normal people" to own firearms anymore at this time in history but said within the same breath that if something bad happens she will quickly come to my house and stand behind me for protection.:banghead: She is a trained psychologist BTW. Navigating your path through life is not like ordering at Burger King for crying out loud.

I never saw a problem with speaking freely about my firearm interests. Not bragging but not hiding like some shady dude in a trench coat in a back alley just because I have guns and enjoy discussing guns, 2A, and related topics.

Later I found this direct openness resulted some of my acquaintances to label me in unflattering ways. Well, the hell with em. I am never in-your-face but I will offer an opinion or anecdotal experience when called on. Nobody gets the right to go thru life unoffended. Me included.

I googled "bang fetish" and only found stuff that made me blush. The OP's friend made up a term that is only being used in the pornography industry. Not even anti-gunners are using this term.

Thanks to all who continue to post. I had written a moderate length post with an update, but a flakey internet connection killed it (tried to post, went offline, post disappeared).

Suffice to say, for now --- I'll try to rewrite the update tomorrow -- the "bang fetish" issue may be the least of my concerns. Tonight, after dinner, the remainder of her new age philosophy of life came out at me in an angry, regurgitated fashion, much like a fire-and-brimstone preacher on fire, leaving me to wonder whether I will remain here as their guest in a beautiful cabin (for free) for winter and part of spring, or seek shelter elsewhere.

<sigh>

Run and do not look back. Free rent in this case sounds like a high price to pay. Then too, for you to decide but I would run and not look back. :)

The problem is, based on these plans that started in early October, I re-budgeted all rent money toward other long-delayed purchases (camping gear, etc, purchased in the last few days) so I have nothing to pay rent elsewhere with for at least two months, let alone paying transportation elsewhere. I'm stuck.

I'll be having a conversation with her partner in the next couple of days to seek a way out of this. He's far, far more grounded, but seems to be ... how you say, at her bidding. We'll see how this ends.

Time to become homeless. You have moved in with a crazy woman. The other guy has to put up with her crap. Well, he doesnt really but he's beaten down. Don't let yourself get beaten down.

I can't be homeless with two rifles and a handgun, let alone all the other stuff I have (which would fit into a medium sized pickup --- but I have no pickup, or even a car).

Sorry this thread is drifting off topic -- but this is a blow ..

By that point, I was getting fairly annoyed, and displayed that with my response, which drew tears to her eyes. (Summary of several minutes: experience hunting since I was a kid; knowledge of the game; refuses to hunt with idiot bravosi; her total lack of knowledge about hunting; and her total inexperience -- she's never even shot a gun, let alone hunted; etc.)

I'm going to need to clarify my position on this topic, and make it clear that the characterization of my interest in firearms as "bang fetish" is not acceptable.

I wasn't there...but as a reader, it sounds like you drove the point home when she got tears in her eyes.

I'd just play it by ear. If she brings it up again, hammer her again.

There is nothing in the word "fetish" that could describe anything about my interest in guns, shooting, hunting, etc.

Oh geez...I'd hit the door running. Putting up with someone like that all winter can't be considered "free" lodging.

At the least you have constant tension to look forward to all winter in that residence. I have no desire to live like that...life is too short.

I believe the last two words have things covered. More like I'm Screwed than I'm Stuck but the end result comes out the same. I haven't a clue how you got yourself into this mess and it's really not my concern. It's not like you have any real options to weigh so what it comes down to is avoid direct confrontation at all cost. You are apparently stuck with a lunatic so all you can do is make the best of a bad situation.

This being a gun forum I like discussing guns and ammunition. Making suggestions as to your current situation is outside any advice I can give you. I am guessing "Happy Holidays" or have a cool yule is out of the question. You are where you are, you have no options so again make the best of a bad situation. That or adjust to living outside in the cold and urinating in gutters. Being homeless pretty much does rule out gun ownership. I suggest till things improve you keep your guns hidden and simply avoid conversation with the lunatic.
