Newbie shooting a new gun - as you can tell, things didn't go QUITE according to plan!

LMAO in last,

Welcome patentnonsense

Glad I could provide some entertainment for you. Welcome to the match!

I hate to say it, but, your results were what I expected when I designed this months match. I expected that their might be some profanity uttered by people when "things didn't go QUITE as planned". I hope people will share their original plan and how things actually worked out.

My first time - this is cool!

It took me two shots to figure out the proper site picture ; the first time I didn't hold low enough and the second time I held too low. The third shot hit the +50 circle, the fourth shot hit the +30, the fith hit the +10, and the last shot brought me back down to 75.

This was cool - can't wait till next month's match!

Next time sight in on a similar target and after you and the gun are warmed up, set up the match targets.
I think we had to shoot with a cold gun only once, to simulate hunting conditions.

This was cool - can't wait till next month's match!

They're all fun ... made to enjoy. Welcome aboard.

You're right of course - I should have taken at least a couple of warm-up shots. Next time!

They're all fun ... made to enjoy. Welcome aboard.
Thanks - I had no idea something like this even existed until a thread about it was posted over in the general discussion group.

I thought the rules said we weren't supposed to sight in on a similar target??

You can shoot on a similar target ... not an EXACT copy (dont print out more than one copy of the "official" target).
This way no one will be tempted to shoot a bunch of targets then use the best one for scoring.

If I'm wrong on this will one of the officials let me know please?

Well, I had meant to submit 2 targets today, but I forgot my rifle at home. :banghead:

I still had my pistols though, so I went to do those.

My plan was to shoot at the 50 first, that way I could get away with one miss which would count as, well, the miss. that way I would get two shots at the small 50 ring. Then I would go into the 20 to get 70, then the 10 for 80. Here's how it went.

I shot it, and it is a pretty close call. I am not used to judging these things, so I will leave it up to the THR VM shooters. Here is a close-up of the shot.

shoot2.jpg

I decided to call it a hit, because it looks to me like the outer ring does touch the 50 ring marker, but I will defer to the more experienced shooters here if I am wrong, and if I am, I will re-hang the target, and continue shooting at it. :p

However, thinking this was a hit, I went for the 20. Here I started shooting a bit high (No, no me, it was the gun ;) ) I got it in the 20, then shot for the 10, and it went high again. Really high. It was a miss. I aimed lower, and it went in dead center. Here's the overall picture.

Of course, sitting here, I am asking myself why I didn't plan to go 50, 30, and 1 miss. It's because, sadly, I'm not that bright. ;) Oh well.

Fun match, photo_guy!

-James

Probably gonna have to leave that up to photo guy. His rules stated the bullet must break the line, not sure if touching the line would count as yours definately touches the line, but does the actual bullet break plane? I dunno, I would have probably scored it as a hit as well, but thats just me. Nice shooting for an open sight pistol.

Scoring

jamz - When I first looked at the picture of your target I was ready to say - "sorry, didn't break the line so it won't count". I want the rules to match conventions used in competitions where possible, and I had always heard that scoring was pretty strict regarding 'breaking the line". I also want these to be fun so we don't need to get too anal about it.
I did a google search to see what conventions are used for bullseye shooting (I have never done that type of competition so I don't have direct experience to draw on). I found this : "A shot hole, the leaded edge of which comes in contact with the outside of the bullseye or scoring rings of a target, is given the highest value". To me your target meets that definition.

So, since the line is so wide on this target let's accept the "comes in contact with the outside" convention for scoring.

This actually helps me also. I will post my target and you will see that I "broke the line" but, boy, it was close.

ProCharger - Sure. If you wish to enter at a longer distance that is fine. Go ahead and note it when you post your score and, in the event of a tie we can give you some 'extra credit' for the added range.

Patentnonesense - Outlander is correct. The default rules do allow you to shoot at other targets prior to the match unless otherwise specified. That means you can shoot at a target to get your sight picture and point of impact/aim down before you "start the match" but you should not use the actual match image targets for anything but the match.
The line is blurry as to what the form of the non-match target can be. We leave that to your moral code. A copy of the match target or another printout of the match target is not acceptable. Other than that...

Personally I use the default "diamond 5-up" sighting target that the range I go to provides as my sighting in target. If I can hit a 1" diamond I should be able to sight in apprpriately on whatever shape the match target is for the month. At the least I can get a good assessment of how good/bad I'm shooting that day.

I think that is a good call Photo Guy. I have always gone by the little black stuff the bullet leaves behind. If it touches the line, it is good. I have run into a couple months where the black stuff was like thousandths of an inch from the line, but I could see white! I wanted that bullet to move just a fraction further, but it never did no matter how much I willed it in my head.

For my practice I use half of a manilla folder with a 3/4" target paster in the middle of it.

photo_guy:

I have wondered why you used breaking the line instead of touching. Now I know. The only competitions that I am aware of that go with "breaking" instead of "touching" are some black powder competitons. FWIW, touching the next highest scoring ring is used in IPSC, IDPA, NRA Action Pistol, PPC, etc.

I have wondered why you used breaking the line instead of touching. Now I know.

Actually, the origin came from Readyontheright. I just picked up the wording he used for past matches and, since it meshed with what I had 'heard' before I left it that way.

Here are my scores for this month.

I shot both handgun classes. Since I was doing better with my .45 during warm up I went with that first.

My first round was a miss. I was going for the +50 target but it was a clean miss. No biggie - I need a miss. My second shot hit the +50 ring, but just barely. It just cut the line through and I was concerned about how it should be scored. Looking closely I could see it did cut the line so I was OK. [Now that we have decided touching is OK it is a clear +50]. The +30 completed that target for a 3.

I wasn't doing as well with my scoped M41 during warm up. Just couldn't hold it as steady. That, combined with the smaller .22 holes made me change my strategy for this class. I went for two +30's, the easy +20, and the really easy miss. I actually aimed for the -5 to be sure I didn't accedentally hit a + target. Total was a 4 but I'll bet it could have been worse if I tried for the 3-shot on this class.

Okay, before I forget the results:

THR Member Name: BamBam-31

30pts: 1
20pts: 0
10pts: 0
MISS: 1
Class: Handgun w/ Ultradot
Weapon: Ruger 22/45
Caliber: .22lr

This was shot at 50 ft., since that was the minimum allowable distance at our range (San Gabriel Valley Gun Club). After nailing the 50 and 30, I got excited and randomly squeezed off the miss, just barely missing the 30 again. Whew.

Next was rifles @ 25 yds.:

THR Member Name: BamBam-31
Total # o/ shots to 75 pts.: 9

20pts: 4
10pts: 1
MISS: 3
Off paper: 1 :cuss:
Class: Rifle w/ iron sights
Weapon: No. 4 Mk. II
Caliber: .303 Brit

As with the pistol, my final intentional miss was a bad shot, this time off paper entirely. Should have been done in eight shots. Still, nothing to write home about. Should have used my 10/22....

Yeah, the test confirms what I already suspected: Shooting rifles off-hand standing is tough. . .

I came close enough that one more in the "10pt" area would have sealed the deal, but I guess I'm not a clutch shooter. I hate to quit, but I just got too tired  .

Just two exhausting. However, I enjoyed the challenge of this month's match, so a big thanks goes out to Photo Guy ;) . Even though I know it won't count, I think I will try this one again, just because I can't live with two DNF's  .

Ok, the snow melted and the sun was shining so I finally got off the couch and went out and did it!

In both cases I tried for the "3-shot". I tried an unscoped rifle first thinking that would be easier. Went for the 50 and got it right off. Then the easier 30 - miss. Oh well, I'll use that for my miss. Shot again - missed again! Well "gosh darn" I says to myself - yeah right. Anyway I hit it on the third try, put one right on the 0 in the 10 target (now why couldn't I do that in the 30?) and added one intentional miss.

Next the pistol. First shot hit the 50 smack dab in the middle. All right! Piece-a-cake this time. Shoot at the 30 - miss! "Not again!" Second one hit it on the 3. Whew!

For those of you who haven't tried this yet, a warning for you - the 30 target is jinxed! :D

It was a fantastic day for shooting. Sunshine, no wind, 60 deg. Since offhand is tough, I decided to play conservative by going for four 20's & a miss instead of trying for the 50 and goofing up with close misses. Same thing for the handgun stage. It worked out real well and according to plan. The misses are real as I continued to shoot for the 20.

I brought Greg back up to enter again this month and he'll post his later. I took a newish shooting buddy up named Daniel and he shot the match but is unregistered as a THR member because he doesn't have a computer, and I do not have any extra mailboxes to designate him to to be able to register. THR will not allow multiple screen names to the same E-mail address for registration, which is understandable. I will post his entry for fun since that's what it's all about. If Match director(s) does not want to count his entry as valid according to intended rules of registered member entry's only, no biggie, we understand. I hope you let it be valid and retain his stats because I'm urging him to get a computer or at least an E-Mail from someone who has an extra.

Edward429451 - check the new rules/faq posting linked in my sig below. You will see that registration is suggested, but not required, to participate in the matches. El Rojo and I discussed that issue and decided to allow anyone to play. It would be nice if they register and I suspect that anyone who trys 3 or 4 matches would probably end up registering anyway just to see the scores and discussion.
