Right now CDNN is selling the FN Police Shotgun... (for those who may not know, FN owns the brand names of FN, Browning, and Winchester and makes the guns sold under these brand names.) The FN Police SG is basically a police version of the FN-built Winchester 1300 Defender shotgun with the rotary bolt... a superb design... known for it's reliable and silky smooth action. This FN branded version has a shorter, 13" pull and is a tad lighter in weight, with a slightly shorter overall length. The size is perfect for close-quarters use. Comes with two chokes. Durable parkerized finish. Accepts Winchester 1300 accessories. And it's about as compact and lightweight as a home defense 12 gauge can be. (Unless you go in for pistol grips, which basically suck.)

Anyway, CDNN is selling the FN Police SG right now for $269! Sheesh... that's pretty darned irresistable... and a very cool shotgun for the homeowner who wants a high quality, reliable, affordable, really compact, lightweight 12 gauge pump shotty to protect the homestead with... even though I don't "need" another shotgun, I couldn't resist pulling out the plastic and ordering one for myself today... for the money they're just too cool (and practical) to pass up.

Here's the link to more info on FN's website and a photo. CDNN has done well with selling them and their stock is dwindling, so if you want one at this price... don't delay.

I have been thinking of getting a "practical" shotty to keep in the truck with me as a companion and to have at home as well. I have one, but I am wanting to get another. That looks like a pretty good candidate.

Steve.... you crack me up. And you are so right on, too! Got me nailed! :uhoh: Buying guns I don't really "need" is my one true weakness! I'm actually about to try to find what's in my safe that I feel I can live without... gotta make more room for "new" guns!

As for this particular FN Police SG, you can spend a LOT more money on a 12 gauge, but none will do the self-defense job any better than the FN Police SG, for just $269. It'll most likely be the one I keep out of the safe more than any of my others.

Well... except perhaps for the FN Self Loading Police:

Bought one of these from CDNN's last batch. Am very pleased with it , especially the option of using different chokes. The short tube, when combined with a full choke, can even handle shooting trap. The parkerized finish is very nice feature (opinion). A houge stock and recoil pad significantly reduce felt recoil. Just saw one at Gander Mountain, for the same price.

Two minor concers, however.

1-Not much thought given to POI with the sights. Had to take off the elevator from the rear sight and file down the rear site blade to get POA=POI. A little bright paint in the "upside down V" on the rear site and the front bead significantly decreases target acquisition time.

2-The inside of tube is not what ya call finely finished, being the roughest owned. This is being very picky, as it doesn't affect function.

I handled one at one of my dealer's a few weeks ago, I must say I was pretty impressed. Extended magazine in place and braced at the muzzle, 18" barrel standard, rifle type sights in place, interchangeable choke tubes standard, reduced length of pull stock standard, a good working finish standard- basically ready to go out of the box with no major alterations necessary. Just add a QD carrying strap to the factory studs and a sidesaddle (for me anyway) and off you go.

A tested design in ready-to-run-with configuration, new in the box for a hundred bucks more than a decent-deal used price on an 870, how can you go wrong?

My, my, you do get enthusiastic.....

A couple things...

First, IMO, the 1300 and its derivatives are excellent shotguns, though not my first choice. If all I had were these, I'd still consider myself well armed.

But, regardless of the hardware, we still need to upgrade the software and exercise it frequently.

If one is spending more on new toys, gadgets and addons than ammo and range fees, one's priorities ha' gang agley.

Here's the True Path, as I see it.....

Get a good shotgun. This'un qualifies. So do 500s, 37s, 870s, 1100s, X-1s, A-5s, 11s, ad infinitum.

Shoot it until you know it as your tongue knows your teeth.

Repeat frequently.....

And the Ithaca M37 / M87. The best-kept secret in pump shotguns, IMO.

Thanks for the input guys... glad to hear your experiences with it are positive. I'm really looking forward to receiving both of these shotguns this coming week!

Dave... excellent points... I am working to get to know my shotguns well. Nearly 100 shells through my 1100CM which I just got last Wednesday. SO with these FN's, I have three new shottys to get intimate with. (Better get into reloading shotgun shells now!) :what:

I have a feeling my Mossberg 500 Persuader is soon to become little used. It's got a long 14.5" LOP,which I don't like, and just 5+1 capacity. The FN Police with 13" LOP and 8 shot capacity will most likely push the Mossberg out of the picture. (Not that it's a bad shotgun by any means. It's a solid and reliable shotty that's served me well for a few years.)

Noah, no offense intended. Ithacas are great shotguns. I edited to correct.

DHart, I don't have the heaviest shell Jones going but I do shoot 5-6K a year. Reloading enables me to do so.
