making a M44 sniper/hunting rifle question

I would like to really do my first project gun some thing that really no one has ever done before with any kind of firearm from any of Warsaw-pack stuff.I have seen a ton of mods with the sks,k-31 ,lee-enfield.So where can I get a thumb hole stock and how would some go about make a detachable magazine mods need for this to work. I bet if one of you guys seen what I'm think of on paper or really life I bet you would buy it.

GigaBuist so what other idea would you do to a k31.If this works out for me I might try a k31 project but that a big might.

Hey, do what you want, but you better make sure you do something that you will really like, because it's going to be awfully hard to find a sucker to sell it to, and I am not trying to be mean by saying that. I simply mean that the majority of people that like Mosin's like Mosin's, not some hybrid/custom/one-off/wierd thing. If your cool with that, and want a project, then I say good luck and godspeed.

If, on the other hand, you think your going to turn the gun world on it's ear by creating a detachable magazine, thumbholed Mosin, probably you should not do that.

LOL +1 to Silverlance's post. That was a good laugh. Can you imagine putting your face that close to the muzzle blast of an M44? (bullpup configuration LMAO!). I actually visualized his concept and its scary to think of a Mosin being turned into an FN.

It would be better to shorten the barrel to 16" and then add a .30 cal Mini-Y brake. Fire some Czech through it. Utilize the rifle as a "repellant" for annoying people at the range that decide to take the lane next to you.

I was just talking out of hand what a neat rifle I'm think up I was not going to sell it I'm not in this for profit but just for a project because I think it has never been done I like challenges. But if you guys want to kick some ideas out go ahead I will take them.

I'm not into the bullpup stuff it just doesn't look right on bolt action setup

How do you float a barrel

As far as ammo availability, the 7.62x54R is readily available in commercial loadings, much more available than 303 (though admittedly imported). Surplus has gotten expensive, but there is more surplus 7.62x54R in the world than the combined total of all other shoulder-mounted small-arms rounds in the world. If none of it gets imported, then it is of no use here, of course, but the commercial ammo is cheap.

As to the action, it may not be the prettiest girl at the party, but it has shown itself more than competent. Check out what the Finns did with it!

here is a link to the buildup of a very nice mosin m39 target rifle. the russian military also tested a few modern versions of the mosin sniper rifle & even built a couple bullpup mosins. here is the link to it, the page is in russian but the pictures are very interesting.

i have a bullpup mosin project on the back burner right now, i have to finish some of my mauser projects first.

yes, i could buy a generic savage or rem-chester & have alot less time & money invested but that wouldn't be much fun

7.62X54 is a decent cartridge power wise and is lots of fun due to the cheep surplus now available. But this stuff is only mil surp so it really isn't tack driveing grade and who knows when it will dry up (say for instance if the next president decides to ban imports of mil-surp ammo?)
If you want a ready supply of ammo and need all of it or some of it to be sniper grade stick with tried and true- .308,30-06,30win mag. Your money is better spent on reloading equipment than trying to convert a mil surp blaster into a sniper rifle.
Who is turning MN triggers into 2 lb shooters? I am douptfull that is a realistic goal.
Have fun makeing a look alike out of a MN,a reasonable shooter out of a K31-swiss or an A303.
If you really want a rifle that will perform at sniper grade go with a new/almost new Savage or Remington. Better action, available ammo, barrels, triggers, scope mounting. With the Savage or Rem you will have some resale when you are done, with the MN it is likely to be worth no more than the cost of the MN Before you start with the torches and maybe no that.

but obsolete as no country uses
it as a service rifle.
many countries still use this round. I have friends finding and blowing tons of this round in iraq alongside the weapons that still fire it from Mosins to Dragunovs. Any country still using the SVDs/Dragunovs etc. still use it. It is currently the longest serving service round in history. The dragunov itself is still currently issued and fielded in Russia, Bulgaria, PRC, Turkey, Finland, India, Vietnam, Venezuela, and probably any of the former warsaw pact countries.

Chavez imported a grip of these just earlier this year:

These rifles are still being manufactured and their variant the PSL is even being fielded, all still using the same long-lived round. It isn't going away soon.

I bought a case of 500 Wolf, brand new for under $150 at the last gun show I went to.

Is it even 'legal' to modify a mosin with a detachable mag like that? My understanding is that imported rifles essentially have to remain in their imported configuration unless you modify ten things on it.

Say Hello to my little friend..........

Bubba.

This is the left over parts from a hand full of U-Fix-Em's a few years ago. Got about $50 in the whole thing. Crazy thing is that the bore is great and it shoots around 2" groups at 100 yards. Bolt cut and the B Square scope/bolt handle package added (given to me by a friend). Cheap Bushnell scope (from somewhere), bayo lug removed because it was jacked up to begin with. The stock was a trade to a guy that needed some #4 Enfield wood. As I said, the parts are the total bottom of the barrel left overs to complete 3 other Romanian rifles. Had to do something with the parts laying around.

I really want to know how they fitted the m4 style stock and foregrip on the mosin....me likey

Here's a thought. The SKS origanally had a fixed mag but could be emtied out the bottom like the Mosin Nagant(not exactly the same but you get my point) then someone cane up with the idea of just taking out the fixed mag and amking a mag that attaches to the same parts, this could be difficult to do because the SKS had a double stack already but instead of making a removable box mag why not just make an extension that can still be emtied from the bottom? Just my 2 cents

first of all... way to bump a dead thread...

the reason the SKS detachable mags work is when you remove the 10 round mag you are also removing the feed lips which hold the rounds in the magazine

a mosin doesn't even really have "feed lips" but an interrupter/ejector which is what holds the rounds in the magazine and is mounted on the receiver... a detachable magazine for a mosin is not possible
