Defensive Handgun: â€The Basic Drillâ€

THR Virtual Match March 04 Target

This month will be a handgun match that emphasizes self-defense. We are going to shoot what I know as “The Basic Drillâ€. This match will utilize a holster, shot timer or stop watch and shooting positions at 10’, 20’ 30’ and 60’. If you have a target holder that comes up to about 3’ to 5’ vertical position, that will also be beneficial.

The Basic Drill consists of shooting from 4 different positions. The first position is at 10’. At the start of the buzzer (or if you don’t have a shot timer, you pick a word that designates the start of time), the shooter is to draw from the holster and shoot two rounds in 1.5 seconds. Every .25 of a second increment over the part time of 1.5 seconds is a 1 point penalty.

The next stage is at 20’. At the start, the shooter draws and shoots two rounds in 2.0 seconds. Again a 1 point penalty will be assessed for every .25 second increment over the part time of 2.0 seconds.

The third stage is the reload stage. At the 30’ mark, the shooter draws and shoots two, reloads with a spare magazine (that is attached to you in some manner, can be in a pocket), and shoots two more rounds. The reload can be an emergency reload, the magazine can be ejected onto the ground. If you really want to do a tactical reload and retain your magazine you can, but it is not required. Par time is 6.0 seconds with a 1 point penalty for every .25 second increment over the part time of 6.0 seconds.

The final stage is at 60’. The shooter draws and shoots two rounds with a par time of 3.5 seconds. The infamous 1 point penalty will be assessed for every .25 second increment over par time.

The total possible score is 100. Subtract any time penalty points and then go count your hits. The inner ring is worth 10 points. Everything outside of the 10 ring will be worth 9 points. All misses are worth 0 points. Here is the target again.

Here are the classes. You are allowed to shoot up to three guns in any of your applicable classes.

Shot Timer Class: Concealed Weapon.
This class is for people with shot timers and who want to shoot from concealment. Concealment is defined as having the handgun beneath some article of clothing. Those of you who have a CCW know exactly what I mean. No portion of your gun should be visible by the general public. You must have the handgun attached to your body in some way and you must draw from a holster (or if you are comfortable with Mexican Carry you can do so at your own risk). At the start of the stage, you must draw from concealment. Be sure to transport your firearm to range by obeying all local laws (aka don’t carry it to the range concealed if you don’t have a permit or live in VT or AK)

Shot Timer Class: Non-Concealed Weapon.
Again, this class if for people with shot timers. You must draw from a holster of some sort, but the handgun does not have to be concealed. Duty belt holsters are certainly encouraged in this class.

Note on shot timers. If you have a shot timer and can draw from a holster, you must shoot in one of the above two classes. You may not shoot in the stop watch classes or the open classes. No exceptions. You may shoot your 3 guns in any combination of the two classes above, but only shoot three guns. I will probably shoot one gun in the concealed weapon class and two in the non-concealed weapon class.

Stop Watch Class: Concealed Weapon
This class is for those who do not have access to a shot timer, but have a stop watch that is capable of measuring to a hundredth of a second (x.xx). This will require you to take someone else to the range with you that can start the timer when they say “Go!†and can stop the timer at the report of your last shot. You must draw from a holster of some type (or Mexican Carry if you are comfortable with taking that risk) and your handgun must be concealed. At the start of the stage, you must draw from concealment. Be sure to transport your firearm to range by obeying all local laws (aka don’t carry it to the range concealed if you don’t have a permit or live in VT or AK)

Stop Watch Class: Non-Concealed Weapon
This class is for people without shot timers, but has access to a stop watch that is capable of measuring to a hundredth of a second (x.xx). This will require you to take someone else to the range with you that can start the timer when they say “Go!†and can stop the timer at the report of your last shot. You must draw from a holster of some sort, but the handgun does not have to be concealed. Duty belt holsters are certainly encouraged in this class.

Note on Stop Watch Class. You must shoot in the stop watch if you have access to a stop watch and can draw from a holster. You may shoot your three guns in any of the two Stop Watch Classes, but may not shoot in the open classes. Again, this will require you to take someone else to the range with you that can start the timer at “Go!†and can stop the timer at the report of your last shot.

Open Class: 10’, 20’, 30’ 60’.
This class is for those of you who don’t have any sort of timer and/or a holster (or don’t want to shoot Mexican style) and, but can shoot at the four different distances. You simply shoot ten rounds at the target from the four different distances. You can start aiming at the target or at the low ready or if you have a holster please start holstered. I do want you to try and shoot your two rounds at each distance in the par times. So try to do a quick double tap at 10’, then before you can count to two at 20’, the 4 shots at 30’ in less than 6 seconds, and the last two shots at 60’ in less than 3.5 seconds.

Open Class: One distance only.
If your range only allows you to shoot pistols at one distance only, there is a good chance you won’t be able to use a holster and/or a timer. List your distance and I will group you by distances. Again, try to follow the same time frame as the other classes. First do a quick double tap, then two rounds under 2 seconds, next 4 rounds in under 6 seconds, and finally 2 rounds under 3.5 seconds.

Note on open class. I don’t want to make several open classes. So unless you can make a really good argument and more than one person has your position, these will be the only two. Make your argument over in the comments and questions thread.

Final score tallying.
The final reportable score for the yearly total will be your highest score out of three possible guns. Each class will also be scored on a curve. So if the highest score in the Shot Timer Class: Concealed Weapon is a 94; then your monthly total will be divided by 94 and that percentage will be reported for the yearly tally.

Example of time scoring.
If your par time is 1.50 seconds and you shoot a 1.50, you would have no time penalty.

If your par time is 1.50 seconds and you shoot a 2.49, you would take off 4 point in time. 1.51-1.75 is one point, 1.76-2.00 is two points, 2.01-2.25 is three points and your 2.49 is the fourth.

If your par time is 1.50 seconds and you shoot a 2.58, then you would take off 5 points.

The score report will require you to write down your times (unless you are in open class) so I can check for you.

Score Reporting Format
When posting or sending in your scores, please report the following.

THR Member Name: _____________________

Class:______________________

Firearm/Caliber: _________________________

Points Score: ___________

1st stage time: ___________

2nd stage time: __________

3rd stage time: __________

4th stage time: __________

Final Score: ____________

IMPORTANT FORMAT CHANGE!
This thread will be solely for posting our results in. There is a separate comments and questions thread that will be for comments and questions. If you will note last month’s thread, we are on page 4 and 94 posts. That makes it pretty intimidating to come into that thread for the first time and to keep up with scores and changes. To simplify the process, only post your scores in this thread and only ask questions or make comments in the comments and questions thread

General THR Virtual Match Rules

The High Road Virtual Match Rules and FAQ Rojo Version 2/29/2004

What is it?

THR Virtual Match is a monthly shooting competition held in cyberspace and hosted on THR forums. Volunteers who enjoy the shooting sports and want to share a challenging, enjoyable, good-natured competition with like-minded souls run the matches for the fun of the THR members.

MISSION:
Provide a fun and challenging shooting competition
Encourage the safe use of firearms by responsible THR members
Encourage members to try shooting methods, type, or styles that may be new to them.

Who can play?

Anyone can participate in a match any month. We encourage all participants to have a THR log in, but it is not required.

The Basic Rules:
-Treat all guns as if they were always loaded
-Never let the muzzle cover anything that you are not willing to destroy
-Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target
-Be sure of your target and what’s behind it
-SAFELY follow the course of fire described for each month’s match
-Only shoot where it is safe and legal to do so
-Ammo – If not designated in the specific match description, feel free to use any ammunition you like, as long as it is safe.
The bottom line is to SHOOT SAFELY.

HONOR CODE:

The match relies completely on the honor of the participants to follow the rules and score targets for the match.
Remember: “Character means Doing the Right Thing Even When Nobody's Looking.†Print out only ONE target per shooter per class per month (unless specified otherwise). Shoot your course of fire and report your score.

Is there an entry fee?

No. These matches are completely free and done for fun.

Is there a prize for the winner?

No. The only reward is, perhaps, seeing your screen name listed above someone else’s when the results are posted.

Who runs the matches?

A designated match coordinator will define the specifics of the task and scoring for each months match.

What is defined in each months match?

The details of each match will change but the information provided will include:
1) An official target (often downloadable from this site or a link to another site with free targets)
2) Definitions of the course of fire, the distance to the target, the type of firearms that are to be used
3) the method of firing and/or holds/supports allowed
4) the number of rounds
5) the method of scoring
6) a definition of classes

How do I enter?

1) If you are not a member of THR then it is suggested, but not required, that you register on the site first.
2) Read and understand these rules/faq and the specific monthly instructions. Download the target for the month and print it out.
3) Bring the target and your guns to your local range
4) Shoot the match as described.
5) Score your target yourself. (You are on your honor to do this correctly)
6) Submit your name, score, class and other info to the THR match coordinator by private message or posting on the match thread.
7) Scanning or photographing your target and posting it is encouraged but is not required.
8) Wait until the end of the month to see how you did against the other THR members.
9) Repeat next month or as often as you like during the year.

What is the cut-off date for match entries?

Unless otherwise specified the final date for each months contest will be the last day of that month.

Can I practice before shooting the match?

Unless otherwise specified in the monthly match directions, you may take some practice shots before shooting the match target. However, you should not use a copy of the match target for practice shots. This eliminates the temptation to pick the best score or get confused on which target was the ‘record’ target when you get back from the range.

Some monthly matches may specify that the match target be shot without practice, “cold and on demandâ€, etc. in order to simulate a hunting or other real world situation.

How many targets can I print out and take to the range?

Only print out the number of targets appropriate for entry each month. There should be no “redo’s†. What you shoot on the match target is your final score.

What are “classesâ€

In order to make the competition fair the entries are segregated into classes. A class may be defined as a type of firearm (rifle, pistol, etc) and/or a caliber (.22 rimfire, centerfire, etc.) and/or the type of sighting system (iron sights, scoped, etc.). Obviously it would not be fair to have someone shooting a scoped rifle against a handgun in direct competition. Classes are designed to provide a general leveling of the playing field. Classes also allow for multiple entries by a single shooter each month. The match coordinator will define the number and type of classes available per shooter.

What if I don’t understand the rules or have a question?

Feel free to post any questions regarding the match in the Comments and Questions thread designated for that month. The match coordinator will be able to answer you question and clarify the rules if needed.

What if I don’t agree with something in the match?

You are free to post objections or comments (in a polite and civil way) in the Comments and Questions thread designated for that month. The match coordinator has the authority to decide all matters of policy regarding the match methods, scoring, etc. and has the final word. You are free to disagree but the match coordinators word stands.

Well I guess I'll kick this off. Went out after work. It was 28 degrees without a cloud in the sky nor a whisper of wind. Just a beautiful afternoon. Shot the match cold with only a couple of dry draws.

This match is really quite fun. The times are tight enough to induce a bit of visual impatience, especially the last stage. I hope everyone gets a chance to shoot.

(Edited to put scoring in the proper format...did I get it right?)

Well, you would think the match coordinator would do a little better at his own game, but alas he did not. I took my brother-in-law and a friend out, both of which have never shot handguns much before. I made the mistake of shooting the two handguns I rarely use first, messing up my memory of my Glock. As a result, I did not do as well as I would have wanted. Plus I was teaching them and it threw off my focus. Oh well. Now all of you have to get out and shoot so I can feel like my time on this was well spent.

Some clarifications.

On the printed target, I listed the 4th stage as 40'. In the instructions it says 60'. I want you to shoot the last stage at 60'. So remember, when you print up your targets, change that to 60'.

Malfunctions. Should you have a malfunction before you get a shot off, reset the clock and try again. If you do get off your first shot, but have a malfunction on the second shot, then stop the clock and get ready to shoot again. This time shoot your first shot off of the target, roughly simulating the time it took to get the first shot off, then shoot your last shot onto the target. Since you might have already put a few holes in the target, it is hard to tell which one it was or if you hit at all, so the easiest way is to miss your first shot on purpose and then put your second shot on and record the time like normal.

If you have any questions or comments about these clarifications, please address them in the March 2004 Virtual Match: Comments and Questions Thread

Ooops, deleted out of stupidity. Explanation below. :(

You can't. You can shoot three guns. Three guns only. One time only. I will keep your first set of scores. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I only shot three guns, my two friends are the other scores. They got tired of shooting handguns and didn't shoot the other two.

El Rojo:

Duh, I guess I need to learn how to follow directions. Thanks for clearing that up. I am suprised that it's almost the middle of the month and only two sets of scores. If timers are in short supply and folks can't participate, maybe you should consider not counting this month toward the yearly total?

OK................ this is my first time at something like this, so here goes.

I shot Open Class, multiple distances because this IS my first time trying such & because of no ready access to a range friendly to holster shooting. Shots at each of the 4 distances were fired one handed, as rapidly as I could acquire the target at the end of the barrel - slower than the alloted times, but not too shabby either. :p

BTW - the extra spots (non-preferated holes) you see on the cap & ball target are hits by the lubed wads I use.

I used speed loaders on the cartridge revolvers for the quick reload at 30' and a spare loaded cylinder with the cap & ball revolver (quicker-but STLL nowhere near the alloted stop watch time).

A 2" snubby and a 10 inch black powder revolver. I gotta admit, that is really cool. Did you peek through the smoke or use a black powder substitute like Pyrodex?

Yep - I used 27gr loads of the new Hodgdon Triple Seven powder with a .454 round ball.

The stuff still smokes - but nothing like true Black Powder.............fortunately (?) I had about a 20knot wind quartering away from me at the range, so the smoke cleared quickly. :)

Well, I did use this match to go out and buy myself a shot timer but I wasn't able to get out to the outdoor range that would allow drawing from a holster. Therefore I could only do Open Class for this match. I did try to keep each set under the par times but that doesn't mean much without actually doing the draw from holster step.

I think the most impressive entry was Mark Whiz using the 1858 Remington Cap & Ball Revolver Replica. That is having some fun. Good shooting to Ankey. That guy knows how to shoot a handgun.

I've spent all of my off time rebuilding the wife's kitchen this month. I hope to get to shoot some this month. Maybe I can shoot the March match retroactively.
