Mexico City, Mexico, Mar. 1 (UPI) -- With the peak season for illegal border crossings looming in the next few months, both Mexico and the United States are gearing up for thousands of inevitable confrontations between Mexicans who will attempt the treacherous journey through the Arizona desert and the American border patrol and immigration authorities on the other side.

While U.S. border states have a long history of local citizen groups engaging in "law enforcement" in the form of scouting for and reporting surreptitious border crossers, this year a large and highly organized effort has appeared called the Minuteman Project, fueling new concerns from the Mexican government for the human rights of its citizens.

Mexican Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez said Monday that the Mexican government will take legal action against any vigilante militia groups at the U.S.-Mexico border who harm or violate the rights of undocumented migrants crossing into the United States.

"We are going to attack by all legal means," Derbez told reporters at a news conference. "We are presenting the reasons why we consider this action to be incorrect and illegal from the point of view not only of our government but also under U.S. law."

Derbez added that he had asked a group of U.S. lawyers in Los Angeles to put together a legal strategy to confront the actions of Minuteman Project volunteers.

The Minuteman Project is composed of volunteers who say they will be gathering on April 1 in Tombstone, Ariz., near the border, to assemble and speak against the "illegal alien invasion crisis." Afterwards, the volunteers will camp out along the border and assist border law enforcement officials for the entire month of April in catching illegal border crossers, according to Minuteman Project founder Jim Gilchrist.

"The men and women volunteering for this mission are those who are willing to sacrifice their time ... while their nation is devoured and plundered by the menace of tens of millions of invading illegal aliens," the Minuteman Project Web site reads.

So far, Gilchrist said he had received more than 800 applications from U.S. citizens who wanted to volunteer with the project.

"People have portrayed us as being violent and wanting to shoot and kill illegal aliens, but that's just not true," Gilchrist told United Press International in a telephone interview from Aliso Viejo, Calif. "We will not be carrying rifles, although Arizona law allows people to carry arms if they want to -- so some people who join us may choose to carry them."

Gilchrist said that most importantly, the volunteers will be exercising their right to speak freely under the First Amendment about the crisis at the border and supporting local law enforcement officials with observing and reporting illegal activity.

"It's no different from seeing a burglar in your neighbor's house and calling the sheriff," Gilchrist said.

Despite Gilchrist's insistence that the Minuteman Project is not a violent operation, Derbez in his Monday statement characterized the group as "hunters" of Mexican citizens. And Derbez told reporters the issue of the militia groups will be handled directly with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice when she meets March 10 with Derbez in Mexico City.

In response to the prospect of legal action taken against the Minuteman Project, Gilchrist said, "Mexico should mind its own business, but instead it's trying to encourage violence."

Since border policies were implemented in the 1990s, it is estimated that more than 3,000 migrants have lost their lives on the U.S.-Mexico border, according to the Tucson-based Human Rights Coalition.

April is typically the month when migrants begin to cross the Arizona desert in large numbers, a migration pattern that tends to run through September even as temperatures in the desert become scorching.

If there's one thing that bugs me about Bush more than any of the other issues where I think he's wrong, it's this crap. It annoys me to no end that in this country catering to the hispanic vote means being soft on illegal immigration. Hell, at this point, I think I might take a pro-gun, pro-immigration law enforcement Democrat over a lot of Republicans. :banghead:

I can't even begin to explain the idiocy of this statement. They are ILLEGAL ALIENS! Damn it I cannot take this much longer. Bush better do something. This is unacceptable.

I had an idea a few months back to make life for illegals a little more difficult and hopefult encourage them to go back home.

If you drive by Home Depot or Lowes or the like in the mornings, you are bound to see many illegals hanging out infront of the driveway looking for work. They are picked up by unethical employers looking for cheap labor in violation of immigration laws unwilling to pay american workers a living wage. Trucks slow down and the illegals pile in to go to a job site.

What if a few of us took some time off in the morning to be in the area of the illegals, armed with cameras and signs that read "Do not hire illegals. You will be photographed!"? Photos of the offender, his/her license plate, and company logo would be taken and posted to a web site along with contact information for the comapny they represent.

It should have the result of driving the illegals off and exposing the employers for labor violations.

Thoughts??

Edit to add that www.donthireillegals.net needs hosting somewhere. I can't afford to host it at this time. Any help would be appreciated!

You MIGHT run into some issues with the Home Depot or Lowes folks if you did this while on theire property. It might be construed as harassing there legitimate customers. Of course, one COULD use a telephoto lense and photograph from off site.

Another issue one might run into is problem with the people who hire the illegal aliens. They might not take too kindly to being photographed violating immigration law and cause a scene or confrontation. I could see the cops getting dragged into this.

Finally there may be an issue with the apologists for the illegals themselves, trotting out the tired old labels of "racists" and "xenophobe", and they too may cause a ruckus and again get the cops involved.

But frankly, at this point I don't give a :cuss: whether those breaking the immigration law like it or not. I think this is a darn fine idea. I may have to cruse by my local Home Depot and Lowes some morning this week to see if there are possible illegals loitering looking for work. May even bring my camera....

I have trouble understanding how Mexico has any authority or right to dictate what American citizens do on American soil. If they don't want their citizens coming in to harms way, then they should put effort into preventing them from entering our country illegally.

Like dasmi, I'm dumbfounded by this statement. They're complaining that private Americans stopping illegal acts by Mexicans is... illegal? It's illegal to interfere with the illegal acts of illegal immigrants? :scrutiny: :banghead:

Why not make them legal immigrants?

We have a legal process for people to follow to become legal immigrants in this great country. Apparently these folks don't want to be bothered with that.

We need a demilitarized zone along the border, complete with razor wire and land mines.

I wonder how the ranchers who live along the border and make up the majority of the "minutemen" would feel about the government using eminent domain to seize their land to put up this DMZ would feel.

You need only look to the U.S. courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. They're routinely citing foreign laws in handing down decisions which affect Americans. The latest SCOTUS ruling, outlawing the death penalty for feral youths who commit murder, cites both UN documents and UK law.

We're no longer sovereign in our own country. :(

The Mexican government wants to get rid of them just as much as we don't want to have them. It's the same situation with those 'How To Cross The Border Safely' pamphlets they were handing out to the poor border citizens. This really does qualify as a crisis and our leaders are failing to remedy the situation.

I applaud the Minutemen and all this talk of 'violence' is just a distraction the Mexican government is using to take the eye off the ball.

If the People of Arizona aren't willing to stop this 'alleged' problem, I don't think Americans from other parts of the country should risk jail time by joining this 'crusade.' Pure bunk.

I happened to see an interview of Arizona's governor, Janet Somethingorother. Anyway, all she did was whine about money.

"I want money for our schools."
"I want money to provide health benefits."
"I want money for social benefits."
"Gimme, gimme, gimme .........."

Typical political game.

For those Americans showing up on April Fool's Day, prepare to live in Tent City in pink underwear.

We'll be taking it from Mexican soil...

These citations start on page 22 of this decision, you can read it here

Sportcat is right, and because they don't want to be bothered with immigration law, what makes anyone think they are interested in ANY or our laws. I have no problem with legal immigration. I am second generation American and darn proud of it. Both of my maternal grand parents came from Poland about 1910. I have a BIG problem with Bush's immigration policies, especially the handling of the Mexican border. It's frustrating! sundog

Why not make them legal immigrants?

Not to mention the damage these illegals do to the land when they cross over.

And they create a larger labor pool that lowers wages the larger it gets.

Illegals do not come here to embrace our country and become part of it, but to exploit it. They refuse to learn the language and create little Mexico's in the US. We spend a large fortune to support these people. They use more in public funds than they contibute.

And the obvious reason, they are mostly all felons.

And they create a larger labor pool that lowers wages the larger it gets.

Various reports show a loss to US natives was 68 Billion dollars due to
immigration in 2002. There is an up side and that is for the rich on both sides
of the border.

I think I might take a pro-gun, pro-immigration law enforcement Democrat over a lot of Republicans.

Agreed.

The problem is that there just aren't any. And if there were, voting for them would increase the influence of the hordes of anti-gun Democrats in a lot of cases.

Where it wouldn't do any harm, like at the level of POTUS or a Governorship in a State with a strongly conservative legislature, I'd certainly consider supporting a pro-gun, pro-immigration control Democrat. Our Democrat Governor here in VA; Mark Warner, comes pretty close to being supportable in this way.
