My first open carry experience

AGREE WITH WINTER BOURNE AND EZY

I don't want to be identified as 'carrying' and be number 1 on the list when it comes to 'hierarchy of a kill'. Better to appear as one of the sheep until the time comes to be the wolf!

Well michigan has been getting yuppified where i live. Around here its common/normal for handgun hunting deer, but open carry outside of deer season, youd get the cops called on you unless you were a cop or were DNR.

However, congratulations that your first night of open carry went so well for you.

I would love to open carry in the summer when it's hot, just for comfort, but alas, I live in a small town and have had run ins with my local politicians and as a result the local constabulary.:D I don't take well to being pushed around and have found myself to have become somewhat of a cop magnet.

Personaly, I don't see anything wrong with it.

I open carry all the time around the city of Chattanooga. Never had one problem. (Few questions, but nothing overtly anti.) One cop (County Sheriff) saw it, looked me square in the eye, I held his gaze, he nodded. That was that.

Keep on OCing.

Every now and then I get the urge to open carry out here in New Mexico, but so far I have had it noticed three times.
1: Was in a Wendy's with my shooting buddy and saw another one of my friends...
Her: James! Why do you have a gun on your belt! Do you have a concealed arry permit?!?
Me and Shooting Buddy: ITS NOT CONCEALED!
Wendys guy at counter: Is that real?
Me: Yes.
Wendys guy: Are you a cop?
Me: Nope.
Me: Sits down and eats triple burger that will give me a heart attack someday.

2: At the local pool hall where I know the owner...
Guy who is there all the time: (half yelling with attitiude) I dont know why you think you need to have that on you all the time! You dont need to be bringing it into a place like this! Do you think that someone is going to come after you?
Me: Well if I need it, its there just in case.
He storms off and then the owners sister comes in because he was complaining to her about it or something(shes from California)
Her: He's right you dont need to be carrying that around, I work with troubled youth and if they see you carrying that, they will think that its ok for them to carry theirs in here too.
Me: They don't pay attention to laws anyway, they will bring it in if I carry mine or not.
Her: Looks at her brother with that disapproving look and walks away.
Now I can't open carry there, but I had a talk with him and he could care less if I have it concealed though.

3: At Hastings, our local book/video/music store, while in line.
Guy behind me: You're allowed to carry a gun on you like that?
Me: Yup
Him: Why do you do that?
Me: Because I can.
Him: Oh I gotta get myself one so that I can carry it!
Me: :scrutiny:
His Girlfriend/Wife??: No, you can't. Remember because of that domestic violence thing?
Him: Oh yea.

Never had the cops called or anything, but depending on where you are, even if it is legal, you might run into someone who makes it into a big deal. However, I keep doing it personally, I figure I can do it, so why not?:D

Open carry is legal in Oregon, with the exception of a few cities. It goes unnoticed most of the time depending on what you're carrying, how you're dressed.

If you look like you're working out in the woods -- jeans, boots, work shirt, there's no problem. If you're middled aged and reasonably clean cut, no problem.

It helps to have a nice "rig" -- decent holster, belt, gun. 1911 in a Galco gets little notice, but an old beater in a nylon Uncle Mikes might get some comment. People think you're LEO for the most part, if you're reasonably dressed, clean cut.

If you're covered in ink, riding a Harley, and look like your hair needs an oil change, you're going to get called on your carry -- even if it's a large knife on the belt.

Pax Jordana,
You keep saying CCW but we don't have a CCW in PA, we have a "Pennsylvania License To Carry Firearms", it's not a CCW. That license give us the right to carry firearms in the open or concealed, even though we don’t need a license to carry openly.

Those who keep saying we should carry a copy of the law permitting us to open carry, that's not possible in PA. The fact that there is no law prohibiting open carry of a firearm is the reason why we can open carry a firearm. You can't carry a copy of a law that doesn't exist.

Why? According to whom? Is this some new official policy?

I just carry.
Standing Wolf,
I'm guessing the reason Oleg Volk said, "It should also be done with a retention holster and backed with a concealed gun" was for practical reasons, not due to any law. I'm guessing the retention holster is to provide security for your weapon so that no one can snatch it from you. The concealed BUG is probably in case someone does snatch your gun or they try to hold you up for your open carry. I'm not trying to speak for him but that's what I got from his statement.

Open Carry and Sidearm Retention

I do both OC and CCW. Matter of convenience more than anything. In all the years I've carried either way, I have never had a negative comment. I do agree with Oleg that it does help acclimate the non-carrying public to the idea that 'good guys carrying guns is okay'.

However, when carrying either way - but especially when engaging in Open Carry - it is important to consider retention. I believe that a good retention holster and some combatives training to defend your sidearm from a surprise snatch is a good thing.

I wish Fl. had OC. It gets uncomfortable to carry my model 19 IWB sometimes depending on what I wear. And I can't even imagine carrying it in the summer that coming up. Thats why I got a Bersa .380.

Open carry gives you a lot more latitude in what gun you wish to have with you on a particular day. Essex

True, but it might be a good idea to carry around a copy of the Uniform Firearms Act of 1995, which is what police in Philadelphia almost universally cite when they claim that open carry is against the law.

A copy of the act can be found here.

The only good open carry story I have is comeing back from a cowboy action shooting match. One of the other guys forgot to pull his "belly gun" and we stride into TGI Friday's all done up in cowboy gear. Waiter sees this old nickel schofield and his eyes get really big and he says "hey, is that real?"

The cowboy with the gun looks down and says "Yup"

Kid says "wild man" and then takes our order, business as usual.

A humble example from the other point of view...

About 7 years ago, when I was interested but largely uneducated about firearms, I was helping a new neighbor move in when I saw that one of the men there was open carrying a Glock. Now I hope you'll all forgive me, but I grew up in CA and the idea of non-LEO carrying was still somewhat foreign to me.

I politely asked, "are you a police officer?" (you can see my train of thought)

"Nope, just one of 'X' number of Utahns with a CCL," was his response.

I asked myself at the time, if he had a CCL, why the gun wasn't "concealed". Still, I could see that he was a well groomed guy and he obviously was there to help, so my mind was quickly put to rest.

Looking back, I'm kind of glad for the experience because it gave the impression that people who carry don't have to be LEO or criminals. Nice, upstanding non-LEO type people carry and aren't a danger to me. It was an educating moment. Now I'm one of those people with a CCL.:)

Open carry in Oregon

I would love to feel comfortable OCing in Oregon but with all the RDDB's in this neck of the woods I just assume keeping my privates private. Not intimidated only cautious of the problems with local ordinanaces and the like. Would hate to be spotted within 1000 ft of school passing by or gassing up and have the law coming down on me. 9 months out of the year a short sleeve untucked t-shirt or button down makes concealment simple and comfortable. For the few days when it is too hot, well the grip sticking out of the back of my levi shorts does not draw to much attn.:D

I remember being shocked as well when I found out that citizens of other states where allowed to carry guns on their person. I thought only cops and detectives were allowed to. Then I started to educate myself.

I am still angry that we are not allowed to carry here in Illinois.

I would guess that you dont recieve any bother over open carry since if your clean cut most people just assume your LEO. If open carry is allowed in your state are you restricted to handguns, or could I sling my AK underfolder or M4gery if I felt inclined to do so. I would never do so, but just wondering if it was legal.

Presenting a good image helps but I think most people just don't pay attention to their surrounding and that helps more.

As for slinging a rifle, depends on the state. For example Virginia has an arcane assault weapons carry prohibition in urban areas(but if you have a CHP you are exempt and may openly carry longarms) and localities may ban carry of loaded longarms under hunting statutes but not all do. However open carry of an AR or AK is possible sometimes.

Does anybody know if its legal to open carry in Indiana? I wear a revolver openly when I'm driving in the boonies, but I always leave it in the truck if I need to stop at a store or a more populated area.
I'd like to be able to carry openly when I'm hiking and fishing, or if I need to stop for gas, etc, but I don't know if it's legal.

Once I got my truck stuck in the mud while I was cruising around with some friends. We were in the process of pulling it out with a block-and-tackle when a family happened by and towed us out. None of them seemed bothered that I was wearing a gun (they might have thought I was DNR or something, though) and the dad even made a crack about needing a more powerful truck if I was gonna go driving through mud! :)

It's nice to meet people who are willing to help each other and who aren't scared of another honest citizen with a gun!

I was open-carrying in a Starbucks in Fairfax County VA a few weeks ago when one of the employees asked me whether I was a police officer. I simply said "No." Then I went on about my business of doctoring my coffee. I could sort of overhear a female customer talking to him, and I picked up her words, "I'm not going to call the police." I heard the employee say to her something about "This is Virginia...blah, blah..."

If you open carry, you will get attention in most places. Be prepared to deal with it, or you might embarrass yourself, or find yourself in a more uncomfortable situation than being publicly interrogated by a barrista.

I OC'd in NoVA (yes, even Starbucks lol) and southern VA not too long ago.

I felt weird, but it was not a big deal wherever I went. I did make the effort to OC with a retention holster ... I have a very visible Blackhawk Serpa CQC holster for my 1911.

I was not aware that you could open carry in PA.

Nice.
