MI, Florida (CNN) -- Miami police issued a plea for information Saturday after at least one person opened fire on a crowd of people on a streetcorner Friday night, killing two people and wounding seven others.
Miami police Friday night cordon off the area where a crowd of people was fired on.

Miami police Friday night cordon off the area where a crowd of people was fired on.

The shooting occurred in front of a grocery store about 9:50 p.m. Friday in the city's Liberty City neighborhood, authorities said.

Police Chief John Timoney said that at least one man with an AK-47 "discharged numerous rounds, then ran around the corner. There were some more rounds discharged there from an AK-47 and another weapon."

One of those wounded was in critical condition Saturday and undergoing surgery, said Timoney.

"These are weapons of war, and they don't belong on the streets of Miami or any other street in America," the police chief said.

Miami police spokeswoman Kenia Alfonso said Friday night that police did not know the motive for the shooting and had no suspects.

What if it was a Beretta 92? That's a weapon of war. Would he be yelping about that too? And also, remember.... the AK-47 shot those people. The guy holding it was there for decoration.

This was on the CNN homepage. I'm sure this will help us in our fight against an AWB.:uhoh:

Well, I would agree with the chief that "they don't belong on the streets of Miami or any other street in America." I don't think AKs belong on the streets. They belong on shooting ranges, and in houses. The only guns that belong "on the street" are handguns carried by law-abiding citizens. I have no idea if that is what the chief meant - I suspect that it isn't. I suspect that he meant that AKs and other such rifles don't belong anywhere in America at all.

But tied up in all of this semantics is the very real concept that we law-abiding suburban and rural gun owners are ultimately going to pay the price for the crimes of savages in "the streets." AKA the "youth" in the "inner cities." They keep playing their savage games, and WE get screwed.

in the city's Liberty City neighborhood

Figures... probably Nico Bellic at it again

Seriously, this reeeally is not good news at all. I can just hear McCarthy, Feinstein and Brady yelling "this is why we need a permanent ban!!"

We're REALLY paying the price for years of...

Lenient sentencing
Welfare
Drug Prohibition
Teachers' Unions and terrible schools
Lack of discipline in schools

I have a friend who, in high school, used to mail-order military rifles, including M1 carbines, without any license, etc., before GCA 68. Did he ever shoot up a corner? Did any of his friends? NO.

It's got nothing to do with guns.

Knee jerk reaction, I do expect better from a chief.

No offense, but where are you from? I'd expect nothing else.

I suppose it depends... Most police chiefs in cities are politicians, more than cops. Small town chiefs are a different breed, no doubt.

Of course that's not what he meant. Miami once tried to pass its own AWB!! This crap bothers me more so than it would if it had been elsewhere. I live in Miami and go to school with a bunch of antis (students AND faculty). Can't wait to here the bull**** that's said on Monday.

Guys - get used to it.

That doesn't mean 'like it'. But it does mean that we'd better brace ourselves for all sorts of breathless, foaming preudo-journalism whenever a firearm is involved in a news event.

Even moreso than before, every shooting will be from a 'hi-capacity automatic' or an 'assault weapon' and everyone with a gun will be a 'gun nut' with 'an arsenal'.

It's just the way it's going to go.

I do not intend, however, to take this laying down. I will write the editor of every rag that prints this slop, letting them know that I do not appeciate their yellow journalism.

You might wanna do the same.

I think it happened in a less than stellar part of Miami, so hopefully it's drug/gang related. Still not good, but probably better than if a law abiding citizen had legally purchased a WASR or whatever and decided to try his hand at spree killing.

I'd also hazard a guess that it was an "urban youth" of one sort or another, not your garden-variety suburban target shooter.

It happened in Liberty City, which is amongst the worst areas in Miami-Dade County, if not THE worst. One thing I noticed is that the article actually DIDN'T say assault weapon, although "weapons of war" hardly has an amicable ring to it. I don't think the method of procurement matters. All this says to antis is criminals have AK's, and banning them will magically make them disappear.

It was Liberty City. I'd lay odds that the AK was not legally acquired, so additional gun laws would be kind of useless here. Not to mention that the perpetrator had no qualms about committing murder. Laws only impact the behavior of the law-abiding.

The fact remains that Obama has a plate full of other very important things to deal with right now, like an economy on the verge of depression. Despite this incident, we've got at least a year. Even then, its not going to sail through Congress, like the Brady's hope, they will have to work hard and fight for it, just as hard as we'll work to defeat it.

Timoney is amongst the worst of the worst. And so is Liberty City (Liberty City Riots). It's a hotbed for violence, has been for quite some time. Johnny, it actually is just a neighborhood within the City of Miami.

How many militaries use semi-auto 7.62x39 rifles?

If it was a gang they were probably illegally purchased. I already heard on CNN talking about getting tougher on gun laws. How does that affect guns illegally purchased?

It has been all downhill in the fight against crime for Miami since the Cuban boat lift, especially the Liberty City area. I no longer travel by automobile south past Broward county line into Dade county.

AWB on the horizon , so stock up now . Glad i have three together with my SKSs.

I thought Obama said he can tackle multiple problems at once, and he considers gun ownership a "problem".

I say we just stop letting people like this out of prison.

Now now, we can't ruin their lives jsut because they commited some sort of crime, even though they are probably going to end other people's lives. We just need to outlaw guns, then the criminals will obey these tough new laws!

"Funny that they would never think that banning crime would magically make criminals disappear."

Now why didn't we think of that before. Lets make it illegal to shoot someone then we won't need all these gun laws.:D

The gun control mentality is that guns are in control of situations, and when we see unfortunate examples like those in Liberty City, we shouldn’t see human beings who have gone off the right moral road because their consciences and self-discipline have not been properly developed. Instead, we should see guns in control of the situation, and then we should react against the guns. “Gun violence” should be called human violence, leaving us at least the dignity of being responsible for our own sins.

I don't think AKs belong on the streets.

Perhaps only under certain circumstances, for example if it's an emergency response to civil unrest.

Yokel, your argument is logical, and that's why it wont work. You can't use logic to fight an illogical thought. Shameful but true.
