I'm going to suggest Rossi. But a Rossi WITH an hour or so of work from a good cowboy action smith added on top.

For that hour worth of added cost you'll get the reduced power spring kit and some general polishing or light stoning as required of the surfaces.

The result will be a great trigger and smooth lever cycling in a gun that even with the smithing bill still comes out less costly than a Marlin 1894.

Caliber wise either will work just fine. And the .357 has the promise of somewhat lighter recoil over the .44. But then you can load down the heavier bullets of the .44 pretty far and still have good hitting power.

Come to think of it if you don't ever intend to load full power .357 or .44Mag loads in this rifle what about a .45Colt? Even heavier bullets that are still moving along at a good clip. And the .45Colt are relatively low pressure rounds again so that should further reduce the slap of the recoil.
