You might want to read up on what happened in New Orleans after Katrina and in LA after the Rodney King riots. It didn't end there either. There were huge riots in Cincinnati a few years ago too.
Calhoun County Texas ain't NO or LA or Cincy. There's been three or four murders here since we moved here 25 years ago. There's drugs, theft, and such, of course. They put the week's arrests in the paper every Saturday. There's usually a couple of dozen, mostly DWIs and drug possession. They did bust a meth operation recently. There's also ducks and geese and doves here.
I have a 9mm and a .38 special that I carry 24/7. I'm armed 24/7....even here. I don't walk around town with a shotgun and I don't need it at the house, either. I'm quite a good with handguns and they can go where shotguns can't. I keep my coach gun by the bed just for safe room security, but any other time, a gun's not worth much if you can't get to it RIGHT NOW. Response time here for a 911 call is less than 10 minutes. If the house needs clearing, I'll call the pros. That's why I pay taxes.
I've been through several major hurricanes in my life, too, and made out okay aside from having to run the generator for a week and do some clean up and repairs. I never needed to run outside and shoot somebody after a storm.
I've seen less crime after a storm than is normal. Usually, everyone is pretty stunned and folks tend to pull together. There'll be the reports of looting in populous areas like after Ike, but it's not rampant.
New Orleans, the big sleezy, well, you have to be a thief to wanna live in a place like that.
And, you'd have to be an idiot to wanna stay there when a cat five storm has you in the crosshairs.
