Sons of Guns

I enjoyed it and think that any positive portrayal of firearms and shooting sports in today's world can only be good.

A couple quick things, the guy that bought the 8 masterkey's was or appeared to be a swat consultant, whatever that means, I hope that that wasn’t my tax dollars. Also Red Jacked commented on Bayoushooter that Discovery films about 160 hours a week and they have no control over editing. Of course understand that because he is from our neck of the woods we are a bit biased :)

I watched it last night and I honestly didn't care for it. Most of my points of dissatisfaction have already been covered in previous post. As stated before, it's "American Chopper" with guns. Great. A bunch of oafish buffoons is *exactly* who we need representing gun owners. Oh well, maybe it'll get better as the season goes by.

Saw it last night.

Not terribly impressed with the core of the show, the upgrades they did etc.

BUT I did like the owner. Seems like a pretty cool guy and the interaction between him and his daughter who actually runs the business was interesting and entertaining.

It's one of those shows you watch if there's nothing else on that grabs your interest.

I don't remember a gun show i didn't enjoy but this was pretty lame if you know your stuff.

If you are NEW it might be cool??? i don't know...

$2,000 for the X-Ray on the canon? what was the point? They were going to fire it nomatter what. I don't know why you would be shooting full power loads out of that anyways.

SUppressed shotgun? Lame... and nothing like no country for old men. I hope that guy is happy being the $2500 Guinea pig. Talk about easy to make and like others have said, its been done before.

as for the Master key? Been done for a LONG time and in several configurations.

And every project was "If this doesnt work its going to hurt bigtime"... if thats the case, you aren't handling your finances properly. And the daughter "If you don't sell at least 3 of these im selling the grenade launcher"... because yeah, that 1500 will make up for everything.

Overall i was very disappointed and I was sticking up for Top Shots from the beginning! lol This show was bad and i was very let down and i don't like talking ill of the shooting community especially when it could do so much good for the relations of the general public if done right.

oh well. Deleted off the DVR and recording schedule erased.... Too bad.

I thought it was weak as well. I'd say it will be cool for all the guys who aren't really into guns as much as most of us are.

I won't be watching it. I find most shows about guns to pretty lame. I like Tom Gresham's shows alright and Top Shot is ok as well (though it does have some low points).

I like that there are shows portraying guns in a positive light, but they still aren't anything I like to watch.

I thought it was entertaining, I could do with a little less of the daughter but i guess thats what people want to see (drama).

I'm a pretty simple guy and I have my gunsmith give me 'off the cuff' quotes and I think they're pretty reasonable ($90 to fully assemble a IMI timberwolf including hand filling a extractor, $45 to drill and tap for a scope base, and provide the rings), but if I'm gonna spend $2500 I personally would like some sort of breakdown (ie, shotgun=$x, labor =$x, additonal material = $x). I don't know jack about silencers and very little about saiga's but $2,500 seems high.

I'll watch it agian becasue I like guns.

well i can think of five other company's id rather see get a contract for TV than RJF.

the guys from magpul are way more fun to watch!

I work with a guy that is "on the fence" about guns. Not a fan of them, but begrudgingly admits they aren't evil and are protected by 2A. Recently, he came to work and just went on and on about this show. He didn't know that this stuff was legal, and we talked about that some, but he just loved the show. I really think that this show made a difference in his perspective of the industry (made of people like us) and of firearms in general.

Correct, it was ultrasound on the cannon, not X-ray. Who knows why, that tube has been belching fire for as long as I can remember without a problem. (I won't get anywhere in front if it again when he packs a 2 pound charge in it.) As far as the show......yawn.......zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..another drama fest. And don't think for a minute that the average city slicker doesn't watch this drivel and think we're all a bunch of dangerous gun freaks who need to be controlled by the Federal Government. I'll stick with Top Shot.

I think the best we can hope for is a gradual shift in perception, not a revelation. That's what has been happening for years, just in the wrong direction: Subtle shifts in the perception of the industry and of owners through biased school texts, one-sided news reports, and glamorizing violence in popular media. I'll take anything that will help shift the perception back in the right direction.

I thought the show was pretty cool. Plus, it is always good for us to have more gun-related shows on major networks. The more real info people learn about guns, the less they will be afraid of them.

Damn near unwatchable.
I concur with Kingofthehill's comments 100%
It was like bringing every b.s.-ing gunstore blowhard I've ever run into, into my home thru the TV. Just great.

Because the shows are 80% drama, 10% talent and 10% crap.
But alas without the 80% drama there would be no show.

Aside from the daughter chewing out her dad a little bit over certain expenses, there wasn't any of the usual drama they've had on other shows. That's good. American Chopper has become The Real World + Choppers. If Sons of Guns can keep that drama off, I'll probably watch it some more.

Regarding the Saiga shotgun exposure, Will is quite an expert on that device and does a lot of mods for them. Check out the full-auto ones on his website.

Also, I sent an e-mail to Will congratulating him on the show and mentioning a few of the technical inaccuracies. He said the following:

"We noticed that most of the technical stuff was edited out . Makes sense , they want a TV show everyone can enjoy, not a Bob Villa show that only gun guys get the references to."

Others here have said as much, but good to hear it directly.

I'm a very happy customer of his. He does quality work, and is great guy to do business with.

I thought the show was mediocre, at best. I think it gave a lot of people the understanding that "I can just stop by a gun store, do an hours worth of paperwork, and go home with a suppressor." Wish that it would have been explained clearer as in "lets do an hours worth of paperwork, get local law enforcement to sign off, get finger printed, then wait 3 to 4 months."

Charleo0192 thats broberly because they used supersonic shott instead of sub.
a suppressor only removes the boom from the explosion not the round breaking the sound of speed.+ its a semiautoaction. gasses will be leaked/sound will also be leaked.

im still thinking about the 30" extended choke wich they say drop the sound to under 70decibel.

I saw this from Will on another forum just now:
Well the numbers are in , somewhere around triple what the network expected . New show , " gun's " and all that.

Really interesting part is that the numbers stayed steady through the first half of the show and then begin climbing . Second episode had a 1/3 more viewers then the first.

If I recall correctly, " unheard of " was the term network v.p. used. They think we got something here, me , I know what we got. We got all you boys here and on the other boards that have supported us and been the backbone of our business for a decade. I really wish there where betters words than " Thank you ". Will
:neener:

I haven't watched the show yet, but watched some video clips on the DC website. I enjoyed the encounter with the Medal of Honor recipient in the museum.

They do have shows where they go over all the legalities and such about gun laws. It's called court-tv. Nobody watches it.
It's entertainment, not a documentary. I also think it's a step in the right direction, getting more exposure to the hobby and the type of folks involved in it. Sure, you could get out a sheet of paper and go over all the inaccuracies but why? If people are interested enough they'll find all of that out once they dive into our world. A show going over every nuance would be great for gun folks but would bore the heck out of non-gun watchers and would last about as long as that geico caveman show.

I enjoyed the show personally. It's nice to have another firearm show on TV, even if there is a little drama involved. Without the drama, there would be no show

why would you need a semi auto masterkey style setup? that thing must have weighed 30lbs...
Did you watch the show? There was a very clear need for it

If there was no drama, no exaggeration, cute girls or dimwits screwing up it would just be another documentary. As far as the quality of the show its a magnet for those awed by something either different or unobtainable by either local laws or economic reasons.

Whats bothersome to the educated population of shooters, gunsmiths and military weapons historians is the almost hack sawed approach they portray, as we mostly know there is a gray area like displaying the internals of a weapons suppressor, not to mention the legality and complications should a person making a copy at home and then blowing their hand off.

I do really like the owner and his daughter steals the show. I do wish they could be more descriptive of the dangers involved with trying to do what they do, I bet a certain amount of people have already hacked shotgun receivers and have them hose clamped to their SKS or whatnot already.

Just to follow the show.

What's the difference with a show like Mythbusters where they regularly do 'dangerous' things that the average person shouldn't do? Just as Mythbusters, they declare a statement at the beginning of the show basically saying "Don't do this at home" If you are dumb enough to try to fit a suppressor to your shotgun in your basement Bubba style, then you deserve what you have coming to you.
