Also, those shooting sticks ARE nice looking ... they look an awful lot like the legs off my folding patio table. with a bit of fine sandpaper, a bit of wood wax maybe... my wife would kill me, though.

My worry is, I've read so much griping about the new Remington-owned Marlins, and I'm a little concerned about it. Are they really that bad?

I have seen many poor examples at various gun stores. Stay away from them until they have worked out the kinks. There are plenty of older Marlins out there in new condition if you keep your eyes open and are patient. If you are talking about needing a rifle now, I'd advise you to buy an ugly old rifle that works properly, not a new rifle that doesn't.

I just bought a new 336w. I thought this would be a good place to get info. I plan to use the Marlin for wolf/coyote protection in northern Wisconsin. I'll probably never shoot greater than 200 yds and usually 50-100 yds. It's also a SHTF gun.

newbie to the site here sorry if I'm repeating a thread but can't read the previous 126 pages, boy you guys are busy. I've always been a win 94 xtr guy 375 and 7-30 waters but have always wanted a 35 rem and have loaded ammo for buddies that had them . my question is I can't figure out the age. they say the newer ser #'s start with a letter, there is no letter and it's an 8 digit ser # ending in 79, so I think maybe it's a 1979. it's a 336a microgroove bbl 35 cal, gold trigger and no safeties at all. can't wait to shoot it. is there a ser # anywhere other than the tang? looking forward to loading some 357 hornady xtp 180 grs in her any powder/load reccomendations?

Nacho, welcome in, and welcome to THR. It's great to know you may add a 336 to your fine collection. (Win 94 folks are very welcome here.)

Your question is not my area of expertise, but others here know that stuff well.

Hang out.

Need the first 2 digits of the SN.

Maybe this is better.

ser # is on the upper tang, no letters, 8 digits, starts 270 and ends 479, so am guessing 1973

WWT is OK but pricy. You only get the trigger, no sear. I like mine. Google 336 trigger jobs and do it yourself.

Huh? the problem is the two pieces that make the trigger not mating solidly, make them out of one piece of metal and the flop can't happen.
Put one into an 1894 just recently could not be happier.

I've taken my 336 to several rifle classes. When I'm busy doing the training I really don't notice the trigger flop. I mostly notice it when at the range just social plinking nwhat I do notice quite often is the crossbolt safety.

help with a 1894 44 mag

I have a 1977 yr that has had very little use. It has the dreaded Marlin jam. Which service center would be a good one to send it to, or what gunsmith do you reccommend to get the action tuned up. Its in pristine shape so I don't want to get a cobbled up job.
thanks

Thanks for the bump, Joel. I've been buried in work (all good).

Greevestim, hopefully someone here will have suggestion for you. (Not a 336, admittedly, but many of us have dealt with the Marlin jam. I sold my 1894, so can't help.)

Mo, great to see you shooting. At least one of us is getting to.
