YX, the way I do it is this.

Imagine holding the rifle in your left hand, with your hand under the receiver so that your fingers curl under the receiver and your left finger tips (especially your middle and ring finger) are on the loading gate.

Using your right hand, start the rnd into the loading gate, but simultaneously use the tip of the middle finger of your left hand (coming up from under the receiver) to push the rnd against the loading gate. Shove it in with your right thumb, press down on the rnd against the loading gate with your left fingers (taking the pressure off).

Since I started doing that, the action is twice as easy, twice as smooth,
and the loading gate no longer pinches my right fingers when it closes.

Make sense?

a friend of mine has an aimpoint replica(ebay) and iw as wondering how well it would work

its a nice replica but not as nice as a $400 aim point but good for the $50 price tag

LOL then you do not need a scope, back in the old days we did not have scopes, heck we didn't even have rifles we had to throw the bullets (when we could find any) and we were thankful

I was going to do that to my 336 originally. But now, for now, I've decided to
leave it stock as a hunting rifle and let the new 1894C be my "CAR",
though I seriously doubt I'll scope it.

That is one beautiful layout you have there.

I have a problem loading it too-the loading gate on my 336 always bites my thumbnail. I found that turning my thumb while pushing the round into the magazine, so that my nail is perpendicular to the receiver, helps to make it more comfortable.

well, guys, put me on the rolls.

just put some money down on a 336CS today. nice wood, shiny where it was handled, near perfect bluing, tapped for a receiver sight. $295 still has the little thumb thinger for cocking the hammer with a scope. I plan on putting some sort of receiver sight on it, or perhaps a tang sight instead, since the stock sights fold down anyway, and tang sights look cool. a williams or lyman would probably be more practical, though.

thanks everyone, ive only got 2 boxes of hornady leverevolution ammo and about 12 boxes at monarch soft point. i decided to not load the magazine tube full. I loaded up 6 at first + 1 and shot everything. after that, I just put it directly into the chamber and closed the action. a lot easier on my fingers.

the hornady ammo shoots high for me at 50yds, but all ammo is nice and tight groups 2" benched.

on the 870, try going to different academy locations and ask to look at each one. My local academy had a lighter finish than the one I want. took a while to find this one.


does anyone know of a good leupold 4x scope for this rifle?
i see some on ebay listed as pistol and rifle, what is the difference? can a leupold m8 4x pistol scope fit on the 336w?

Given that it reaches out to 200, we can expect "high" at 50.

But yeah, "tight groups" is the key phrase there ...

yongxingfreesty - what gauge is that shotgun shell? I don't know why, but the thing looks huge. Especially if that's a .30-30 shell next to it. 10 gauge? Just looks too big for 12 gauge. Or maybe my sense of scale is completely off...

I would recommend not putting either a handgun or rimfire scope on a centerfire rifle, as parallax will be an issue. If you want a scope, get a rifle scope.

I will probably have a Leupold VXII 1-4X20 available for sale in a couple of weeks (after a business trip) if you are interested. I also have a set of Warne rings and bases that will fit a 336.

There is a scope I like better than a 4x on the 336 platform. It's the fixed 2.5x compact from Leupold. I have one and it fits and works well with the 336. Mine is not currently mounted so I cannot show a photo on the Marlin. Nope, mines not for sale - saving it for a future purchase. It looks best on the shorter Marlins as it is very compact. Lots of people use them on dangerous game rifles. I had a different one on a .375 H&H years ago. Worked well. It is on Leupolds site now as the FX 2.5 compact scope I believe.

However, Leupold used to market a 4x compact that is good on the 336. There are still lots of them around used. There was two versions: the 4x compact and the 4x compact rimfire. As I recall they were the same scope but the parallax was set differently at the factory.

You could probably find one on the used market.

The 1-4x's are also good when you need an extreme field of view.

If there's a Big 5 in your area, they will either carry it or you can order it from them.

Wal*Mart doesn't keep them on the rack, but they have them in the catalog.

You can also find them at various gun stores. Careful, though. The cowboy version is up around $650+ while the ordinary ones will be from $370 (on sale) to $480 (retail).
