Williams Peep Sight

I just got my Williams Peep Sight for my 39A in yesterdays mail. It is the type for the new rifles that use one scope mounting screw on top. I really like the way it looks and think it's gonna work really well. I was worried that it would not hold well with one screw but it is designed to wedge itself to the receiver. I will try to take a couple of pictures in the next day or two if anybody cares to see it. The Williams web site has no pictures.

I did get a chance to shoot my 39 last week. It's been years since I have shot a rifle but was pretty happy with the results. I was getting groups the size of my open hand at 50 yards from sand bags with cheap bulk ammo. I know the peep sight will help as will plenty of range time. If the weather is decent I will hit it Saturday morning.

Brassman, Thanks for the info on the CB longs. I picked up a box to try out just for fun.

I've been going over .22lr lever actions and after much research I've come to the conclusion that I must have a Marlin 39a. But my god are they hard to find in Finland, I can find Henrys and Win 9422's but no Marlin 39's :(

Marlin also lacks any e-mail on their site so I can't even ask them if they got any dealers. Also, it does seem they only sell their 39A with a checkered pistolgrip. I'd like one without checkering like the older models personally.

Looks like you'll have to find a good used 39, but that would be even harder than finding a new one.

You can always send a letter to Marlin asking about dealers in Finland. As for email, I know they have email, but as you know it's not listed on their contact page - very strange. You might try experimenting with some obvious email addresses to see if they get there. I would try: [email protected]
or
[email protected] (the president)
or
[email protected]
or
[email protected] or [email protected] (Jude Carter is the director of marketing)

This is directly related to the Marlin 39 Club, though it may not seem so.

I just sold my 10/22. :D

Now there's a slot in the safe for another Marlin lever gun.:p

New 39 owner. I have questions.

I just purchased a 1966 Marlin 39for $100. The stock of corse looks old, but is not gauged, cracked or broken. The rifle came with two new barrels. One is identical to the one on the gun and the other is "original golden-39m". It also came with a new butt and fore stock, however the fore stock is shorter than the one on the gun. Looking at the encyclopedia of modern firearms, I belive I have the Montie version. So here are my questions.

1. Should I refinish the stock or leave it original.
2. Should I have the barrel changed. (Nothing wrong with the original one)
3. Were can I get a front sight for the gun.

Also the above mentioned parts that I don't need will be for sale.
Thanks in advance.

Phone & Fax

If the mail from Finland is too slow, you should be able to send them a fax:
Phone: 203-239-5621
Fax: 203-234-7991

I have not been able to find an email address for them yet.

Another Sign of the Times

Gentlemen,

I was cruising through Gun Broker when I saw a 39 Mountie. The auction had a few hours to live and the price of the gun was up to $763.

*zowie*

I did find a store that stocked Marlin 39A's, unfortunately they are 876 euros  Thats well over a thousand dollars(1300 about), I do not understand this very high price, Marlin 1895 Guide Guns in .45-70 can be found for as low as 670 euros new

So I guess I better start looking for used 39 somewhere, or something else like a 9422 of older manufacture, they're both about as easy to find I guess

Heavy barrel "Golden" model. Different from your average 39M, I think.

Not that that would matter that much to those who just want a plinker.

OTOH I got a rare one-year-only 1973 39M Octagon for 400 bucks in similar condition. That price is pretty high.

A regular 39M was going for $300 or so recently, though maybe they're going up. I missed out on a beauty for $299 in a shop, with nice peep sights added to it. Oh well. I don't know if I could justify buying a third 39 if I saw one like it again, but you never know...:)

Cabelas

There's a Mountie on sale at the Cabelas in Coeur d'Alene.

On the rack, right outside the Library.

About $370 or so, if memory serves. It's actually one of two Marlin 39s, but the other one's not a Mountie.

There's another non-Mountie on the rack at Northwestern Pony Express in Coeur d'Alene (right by Orvis).

(And the price of the 1894C carbines at Black Sheep has gone up from $420 to $450, but that's another story.)

Not that I actually check on these things, you know. Much. At all.

HisDivineShadow - 876 Euros!! Holy mackeral! That's outrageous.

Is there any way you can purchase one in the US and have it imported? I'm sure handguns would probably be out of the question, but rifles?

Ghost,

Welcome to THR!

Could you post some pics? I think I know what you mean but am not certain.

In general, a barrel with 39A means a regular 39A, and 39M = mountie. But sometimes a short barreled "39A" is a mountie, like mine. And I believe there's a 39A carbine, too. (39C?).

Shadow,

CBJ that's outrageous! Eu 675? Are Browning rifles available? The BL22 is a fine rifle, just a little small.

Photos

Thanks for the reply. I looked at the barrel and it did say "Marlin 39 Carbine" I'm lookin for a front sight and the screw that attaches the butt stock to the frame. I will post photos of what I purchased. Should be by the end of this weekend.:)

Ghost,

I've not checked it out but I'm pretty sure the 39 carbine is a rare variant that's worth a fair amount of money.

If nothing else, you can sell it to Nematocyst. (long story about his quest for a short barreled 39A).

I'd try http://www.e-gunparts.com/ for the front sight and buttstock screw.

I've read that you can buy parts from Marlin but don't know how you do so. Call the repair shop phone line? I've also read they do repairs for 39As for free but I don't know details or if you have to be the original owner or what. Or if that extends to something like a Model 60 (I wouldn't think so...) If you need an owner's manual to get parts numbers, PM me. Schematics w/ part numbers are also on e-gunparts website.

An alternate to the front sight replacement would be to buy an aperture sight with a new front sight to go with it. I have a Skinner rear aperture sight and Dr. Skinner makes front posts for them as well. He'll make you any size aperture you want for free, so get a couple. http://www.skinnersights.com Also XO ghost ring w/ an XO front sight.

The Skinner sights are popular but do not feature fine adjustments. Small and rugged, though.

I'd clean the stock with some Murphy's oil soap and follow up with Johnson Paste Wax. If it's not satisfactory then consider refinishing. I've never refinished a stock. I understand that it's tricky to not open up wood/steel clearances when sanding.

Re: the barrel...well first I'd inspect the muzzle and crown very closely. An inspection with a borelight (don't shine the light directly down the bore, angle it a little) to look for pits and rust. If the mounted barrel looks good, shoot it. It would be best value wise if the barrel on the receiver was the original for the rifle but if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Bumpity bump

Far, far behind in reading
after yet another ... challenging week at work
(moving towards 70 hours, and it's not over yet,
but I see a few days off coming, so I'm ok ... :uhoh: )

Such a fine experience to check into the club house
to find it in such fine hands, with a lively discussion,
new members, a $700+ 39M :what: and other frivolities.

Favorite quote of the last page of posts:

Now there's a slot in the safe for another Marlin lever gun.

Slugless, yeah I agree it outrageous but the 675 was for a 1895 in .45-70, the .22LR 39A was 875 euros. Infact 675 for a .45-70 is a good price in these here parts.

I did get to hold a new BL-22 in the gunstore yesterday but I think I will go either with a 9422 or 39A, they are both the truest to the real levers you can find. The BL-22 while nice has different lever-action model where the trigger and all follows the lever. I'm something of a stickler for the real deal.

I did manage to track down a nice 9422 with a scope for 250 eysterday, non-checkered wood on it (good), I wonder how old that makes it...

Edit: Mal H, I'm afraid the cost for export of any rifle from the US is atleast 200$ for the permit alone. Freight costs seem to be another 200. So thats 400 on top of whatever the rifle would cost :/ These expensive export and freight costs is why local dealers in europe can keep prices on a level that just about makes it not worth it to import personally.

Wow, that totally explains the price premium. What a rip...

If a 9422 is easier for you to get and that much cheaper, it's not like it's a bad gun or anything. I would consider it.

39 Prices

I was at the gun show in west palm beach florida today. They only had one 39A and it sold for $795. I didn't get any other information regarding the year type or condition. Just an fyi.

Good God! I paid $117 for a brand-new Golden 39A at a hardware store in 1978. I still have that rifle and it's still a tack-driver, even if it ain't as pretty as it used to be.
What's it all coming to? :barf::banghead::fire::what::confused::eek::cuss::(

I just shot my 39A with the new Williams peep sight. I really like it. It is much easier on my eyes than the factory sight. Now I just need to get use to it and shoot the heck out of it. It was putting shot after shot into the 9 ring of a slow fire pistol target at 50 yards from sandbags. Not bad for me and a brand new rifle. I also tried some of the CB Shorts. They are cool. It's like your shooting a BB Gun. The only real noise is the hammer falling.
