After 3 months on layaway

Hey everyone!

I wanted to save my first post for this thread. After 2 months of searching and 3 months of layaway I finally got a chance to take home my new 39a. Hopefully you all will accept me as a memeber here :)

Here is a picture of the rifle and the stock grain. Personally I like the way the grain lines flow.

Here is my new Rifle.

OTTOSHOT- that rifle looks like a winner. The scope mount you have is not the one everybody else uses, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

If you have been following this thread, you have noticed the problems I have been dealing with concerning flex in the scope mount.

Your mount looks very rigid because of the way it mounts. The tail of yours is short and will not flex like mine does.

VICDOTCOM- nice rifle! I agree about the grain in your stock. It makes mine look plain.

You guys all need to shoot the Shamrock Shootout with us!

Otto, great pics. That gun has a lot of character. A few blemishes, but that adds character,
and it'll clean up beautifully and keep on ticking for a long, long time.
I trust it's found a good home, as you have here.

TX50, welcome in. Great to hear stories of owning multiple 39s. What a privilege.

Thanks Frank, Nemo, Pat and Mo for the help. I will update with some pics once I get it in a couple weeks. Still waiting for my paperwork to clear.

This rifle was physically exactly what I was looking for. A lever action .22, dark wood finish and old with plenty of character.

If she shoots well then I'll consider myself pretty lucky, Hopefully you guys can help me tweak it if needed.

I love the look of the gun you picked up. I actually searched gun shops and pawn shops for a few months for an older 39a to purchase. They are pretty rare second hand arround here. but im not going to stop looking either lol

But I haven't shot my rifle yet. I have some time over the weekend to break it in.

Sorry I did flip a couple of shots and didn't notice the reversal. So you will have to imagine it is a right handed 39. I if you can do that, then you can enjoy the shots. I think it is a nice rifle and a little unusuall, but not rare. I thought I would share it with you guys.
 
We're kidding with you, Rick. There were never any left handed model 39s.

Yes, It's a very nice rifle indeed. I'm looking for a clean Mountie myself, and would be proud to own that one.

Any chance you can shoot with us in the Shamrock Shootout?

You just might be surprised at how good that rifle will shoot!
 
I will have to read the rules for the shamrock shoot. I havent taken it to the range yet. I did take a dozen or so shots out back with Aguila Super Colibri to check function. It functions great and killed a soup can.
 
Length of pull

Has anyone here ever tried reducing the length of the stock on their 39a's? I have been shooting mine and I think its a little to long for my arms by about an inch. I am going to get it done by a smith, but I was just curious to know how difficult of a process it is.

Cure for Cabin Fever

Well I finally had a day off that wasn't a major N'oreaster storm. Today was actually sunny, relatively warm,(40) and completely calm. A perfect day to compete in the Shamrock Shoot. The volume of snow at my primitive little range made it a challenge as the 25 yrd target stand was half buried and tough to get out to. The 50 yrd stand wasn't an option without snowshoes. After a 3 hour session, I had a chance to sight in a new pistol scope for my Ruger MK III as well as complete a fairly acceptable target for the Shamrock Shoot. Today's outing was the perfect cure for the cabin fever I've been feeling as this winter is finally easing up. Here's some pictures to motivate any potential Shamrock competitors. I don't think I have put 500 rounds through this 39a yet; my impressions couldn't be better. At first I thought I would like to replace the buckhorn sight as soon as possible, but after working with it during this shoot and the Valentine's shoot, I think I might be keeping them on a while.

Next week I'm bringing the snow shoes to to reach the 50 yard target stand and have a try at a 3x5 Shamrock card!
 
While shooting the Shamrock match, I tried a variety of brands before settling on the best performer; I tried the following:rated worst to best,

Remington Target standard velocity(wicked dirty, erratic charges)
Federal Target Grade Performance
Remington Golden Bullet, bulk pack
Federal 550 value pack
CCI MiniMag, HP
Remington SubSonic
Dynamit Noble target rifle

The Rem. Subsonic and the Dynamit Noble were close in consistency, almost a toss up. My 39a is fairly new and I doubt if I have more than 500 rounds or so through it yet so I am still getting familiar with what it likes to shoot. These postal matches are one of the best ways to achieve that goal and have a little extra fun at the same time. Now that I've finished the match and sent Mo my entry, I'm kind of fighting the urge to scope it and enter another target. Should I anticipate any issues using the rail supplied by Marlin with the purchase of my rifle? My scope option is a 3-9x40 Tasco.
 
I have very limited experience with the Marlin scope rail but I had no problems. Mounted quick, zero'd fast and had enough real estate for my rings to work with the scope I was using.

My CZ loves the Dynamit Target ammo. My 39 shoots it a little better than other ammos, the main difference being less fliers.
 
I don't know why I'm the only person reporting problems with the Marlin scope base.

I'm pretty sure that it would work fine with the smaller scopes normally found on a .22 lever rifle, but the scope I have mounted on mine is quite a bit larger than what most folks would consider normal. The big scope's weight and length offer more stress and leverage to the mount.

I've changed everything involved with the original setup, and I hope to get better results this time.

I would recommend mounting up the scope to the mount you have with a set of rings that offers a nice, wide, and sturdy clamp at the bottom.

If it shoots to your satisfaction, then you are on your way.

If you have the same problems I did, you will know it right away. My rifle shot groups that were twice as tall as they were wide.

Fortunately, replacing the mount and rings with all Bsquare stuff only cost me about fifteen dollars plus shipping.

Sometimes it takes a little experimenting and "Tweaking" to get a rifle to shoot it's best. For some of us, that's half the fun!

Can you describe what's happening with CCI MM? Are you getting good dents on the rim? Is it limited to only CCI MM rounds? Thanks...
 
I took the 39A and the marlin 925 to the range today. Tried half a box of 7 different types of ammo in both. The 925 misfired on the federal champions the most, with winchester super x and CCI velicotors the best. The 39 didn't misfire a single round. After letting my container of mis-fires sit for a bit I loaded them up in the 39 and they all fired as well.

Just to touch base ...

This was already an extremely busy time for me, but this weekend,
my workload exploded (believe it or not, in a most excellent way).

I may be a bit scarce in the club house for a week or so. (Hope to take some break time to read.) Don't think it's due to lack of interest. (And I'll respond to those ammo/FTF questions above asap. I think we're going to conduct a psy-entific experiment on that issue ...)

If I do this right, and work my butt off now,
it'll insure that I have more time by the end of the month,
just before shamrock's go out of season. :D
