I'm glad you got your 39A going smooth, Sandy. I wish I would have been able to help. Glad things worked out...


I think I'm going to go ahead and buy that brass Skinner. It is the one thing I want to do to my 39A. I have a Williams 5D and it's okay... but I really want the Skinner.
 
Range Report

Well, I finally made it to the range today.

I've got a 1969 39A Mountie that I purchased last month.

The Carrier Rocker was broken, I was able to fix it pretty easily thanks to all the info on this forum.

My first shot from about 30 feet was a dead-center bulls-eye. Got some great groups, just shooting off-hand with the standard sights.

Even at 25 yards it did very well. Some of the shots were clover leaves, with a nice even spread around the bulls-eye, and a couple more shots touching the bulls-eye.

Very happy with my new rifle, look forward to shooting at some cans in the near future.
 
Sounds good! That sounds like a sweet shooter. I don't think mine does that well - but it's probably the shooter rather than the gun. :)

Mine is one of the newer ones, by the way. Made in 2006.

Well, I finally did it... got the money order off for a Skinner sight this morning. Going with the brass, as stated earlier. I am hoping it gets here by next Saturday.

I will be dying to test it out once I get it. Might have to break down and find a range in town. Not sure if I can wait for a trip to the country! :cool:

Of course I'll post a report after testing...
 
Does anyone happen to have a rear sight elevator for a 39A manufactured between 1946 and the mid 1950s? I lost mine and can't find another anywhere. I tried all the ones from the usual parts places and no-can-do.

Pards, it was a year ago Jag got us out shooting our 39's. To pay homage to Jag's match we are having another using his target - the ubiquitous 3x5 index card. We need some 39 shooters to join in the fun and perforate some cards. Here's the link to the match.

Hey guys, I'm new here and glad to be a member finally! Anyways, I collect old lever Marlins, and my 39's include a 1961 39A with original Weaver scope, a 1958 39A with factory sights, and a 1969 Mountie with a Lyman peep. Add me to the 39 club, I'm a fanatic!
 
Old Marlins

OK RippinSVT now you are over the line. You are considering Model 39's older than 1970 to be "old Marlins". That is really putting the touch on a number of us Senior Shootists. This is most discomforting. Your penalty should be a fair gallery of these alleged senior Marlins and let others decide. Regardless a warm welcome to The High Road.

I agree, lol. My newest rifle is a 1929 vintage. My newest Marlin is my M39 of 1927. I might step up a bit as I'm looking at a 1960's 336.
 
Oh, come on fellas, old to ME! I'm only 23, but I am drawn to "older" rifles. That being said, I can't afford case-colored S-prefix 1923 39's and 1891's. The older the better for me, but there is a point where price becomes an issue! I'm a tight-budgeted college student with a passion. If I could hang a bunch of S-prefix 39's and old 1894's on my wall, I would, I assure you. My father-in-law has like 12 really old ones though, so at least I can shoot the classics.
 
I trying my best! I have good guidance when it comes to gun choices, although I've made some poor purchases (.410 Saiga, doh!).
 
Well... the Skinner arrived today, and it looks great! I couldn't be happier.

Thanks to SGW42 for the pic, that's what made me finally go through with it I guess. I've been thinking about doing this since page 5!


Sounds like the perfect time to get in on that November postcard match...
 
my marlin is misfiring bad!!!!

I have searched and searched to no avail....HELP.. I love my marlin 39a, I like the feel, the look, and everything else...anyway here is the problem. It is misfiring about every 3rd or 4th round!!! Like clockwork.. EVERY 3rd or 4th round..... It is a fairly new gun as I bought it in January of this year (08) and I have only put maybe 200 rounds through it and its misfiring. Most of the time I can re-cock the hammer and then it will fire, sometimes I have to pull it back 3 times. If It doesn't go after three I will eject and save it, I have examined the strike marks and some are light and some aren't. I put those "duds" in my ruger 10/22 or my win 190 and BANG! I have never had misfire problems like this from any other gun and I'm peeved. It's done it with 4 different types of ammo (win,rem,cci,fed)thats not normal.. even if it is cheap....so I hope. I have read some of the ideas on this forum and already checked for: excessive oil/grease, burrs, loose screws, etc etc. I really want to correct this problem because it's a beautiful piece that I would like to take hunting and boast as a very reliable gun, but in the mean time I just can't risk it... HELP PLEASE... by the way I am new to this forum (sorry for the long windedness.)

I recently bought the above listed rifle. It has a broken front sight. Can anyone tell me where I might find an original front sight? Also I am told the bolt may break if using new higher power .22 ammo. Is it possible to get a new, stronger bolt. I am told the 39A bolt will work but I can't find them any where either. Thanks for any help. James
 
Misfires

Fishinbill, I had similar problems with my new 39A. I found 6 (six) loose screws in the receiver - virtually everyone of them caused some sort of problem. If everything is tightened down, then maybe it is a firing pin that is hanging up. If so, check the top of the bolt and see if it is smooth across the top, if not, then file down the high bits and use a hone stone to smooth off the top. Make sure the firing pin is not being impeded by the 'Firing pin retaining stud' (#24) that keeps it attached to the bolt.

If you still have problems, then check the 'bounce back' action on the hammer. You can pull off the stock from the action and look at the hammer as it goes through the stoke. On my new 39A the 'bounce back' was excessive, it actually bounced back too much. That extra bounce back slowed down the hammer before striking the cartridge. I trimmed off some of the bottom section of the 'Y' so that it didn't bounce back as far.

You can remove the hammer spring by shifting the 'hammer spring adjusting plate' (#38) out to one side. Then you can trim off some of the lower portion of the 'Y' on the 'hammer rebound strut' (#35) so that there is less rebound pressure. If I ever have any more problems with the 'bounce back' I think I will just cut off the lower part of the 'Y' on the 'rebound strut'. There won't be any bounce back, but I doubt there will be any more misfires.

I have now tightened everything down and smoothed out the action and the rifle now acts like a real Marlin - smooth, crisp and with no jams - I have no idea what has happened to quality control at the factory, but they should fire the clown that is presently setting up the actions on these rifles. My rifle was fine - it just needed some attention to detail.

I won't get it for about ten to fourteen days though, sent the money off yesterday.

I'm excitied, I've never owned one before.

Hope I didn't pay too much.

But, you can't take it with you.

I'm sure you will enjoy your rifle. I saw the pictures - very nice! The price was pretty good; you didn't get a bad deal or anything (don't know if it comes with the scope).

Looks like you got a nice rifle. The wood has some really nice figuring. Looks like some of the other ones on Gunbroker went for a lot more $$ than yours.

I removed the wood from mine, lightly sanded it, used Minwax Tung Oil (it has shellac--it's not a pure tung oil), and it looks like new. Was very careful not to remove much wood during sanding/steel wooling. I've had some practice on some very beat up old stocks. No plans to re-sell mine, so I wasn't worried about the collector value on mine.

Actually, per the OP of this thread, you don't actually have to own a 39A. Just have a healthy interest, at least. So you may have been in before you even got your rifle!

Having at least one of them is definitely a "feather in the cap", though. :cool:


We also gladly accept model 39 and model 1897 owners and enthusiasts, as they are the direct ancestors of the 39A. [EDIT: Also model 1891 and 1892 owners - if you happen to have one of those lying around! :neener:]

Looking for a scope mount for a 1950 39a. I do not want to modify it (drill and tap). Any help appreciated.
 
On my 1927 Pre-A, I put a peep sight into the dovetail on the barrel.
It's a Winchester 96 IIRC with a vintage Lyman 17 up front.

Hi all,

Been away for a while, but now I'm back. I'm reading with envy the acquisition of these old 39As.

Forgive me as I have not gotten through all the pages yet, so the question may have been already answered. Does one remove the buckhorn sight when a Skinner goes on?

I just *might* have a photo to show you all soon... :)

To my understanding the buckhorn should fold down out of the way if you decide to go the Skinner route. I'm not sure myself, I messed up my buckhorn and it has been removed for awhile.

I have a question for those who can answer. If you have sighted in a Skinner for your 39A... what elevation did you go with (in half-turns, I guess)? I would like to see if I'm in the ballpark. Thanks in advance.
 
I have a marlin "golden" 39a. It was their anniversary edition which features a "gold" trigger. My grandfather bought it at Service Merchandise (anybody remember them) a long time ago.
