What do you do with your carry gun when you are home?

Could you clarify the IED statement ?
I thought it was pretty self explanatory. I don't think firearms should be treated like an improvised explosive device that could go off at any time.

I've said this before but I think leaving various guns stashed through out the house is a horrible idea. You are far more likely to lose them in a burglary than to use them to defend yourself and every gun increases the odds of you having to face an armed burglar in your home.

I keep my guns on my person or on my nightstand when I'm at home. If I leave the house they are locked up. Except the one I'm carrying of course.
You're certainly entitled to your opinion and are free to do things however you wish in your own home. I reserve the same right. Actually, around here, you're 100% more likely to grab a rifle to use against a marauding coon or skunk than either intruders or burglars. Since I work from home, odds are good that if bad guys come knocking, I am here. Don't presume every situation is identical to your own.

I put my carry gun on top of my gun cabinet in the den, that's where I spend the most time. When any of the grand kids show up it goes back in my pocket until they leave.

Have a couple of old walther 22's (PPK/s and TPH) that are usually with me while doing chores on the farm

I was thinking more along the lines of scattered and hidden all over the place and you never know when or where you might find one

When I wake up I get dressed and my Glock 17 goes on IWB. At bedtime I get undressed and it stays holstered till morning when I change pants. I have a Glock 17L wi a TLR-1HL on it in a holster next to the bed on the night table. My kids never touch my guns and don't go in my bedroom either and it has never been a problem. My wife keeps hers in the drawer of her night table.

Normally it goes in the closet, when the granddaughter is here it goes in a lockable bank bag buried in the closet!

I'm not sure anyone is so absent minded as to forget where they've stashed firearms. When I was living alone I probably had 3 or 4 handguns hidden in certain areas, but it's not like I ever forgot or came across one and was surprised to find it.

On the flip side, it was almost comical when my great uncle passed away and my grandpa and mom were cleaning the house. I think they found 7 or so handguns stashed behind books, on top of cabinets, and in drawers. THEY were certainly surprised every time one of them found another firearm!!!

When I carry at home, it's usually a small .38 revolver that will fit in my pocket. I usually carry that gun when I'm out, so there's no change when coming home. Since Ruger seems to have repaired my LCP, I might carry that for comfort, now and then and keep the .38 locked up (or unload it .) The revolver can be less comfortable when sitting.

There was a thread here a couple years back about who had lost a firearm. It was at least 5 pages long of people who had put a gun down in their house and that was the last time they saw it.

I stand corrected. I can't imagine the panic I would have if I had lost a firearm in my house. I don't think I could sleep until I found it!

Glock 19 all day- every day. When we go to bed for the night it goes in the nightstand and at that point pretty much becomes a backup gun. My wife's Glock 19 goes on a magnetic mount under a shelf the living room when she gets home where it is readily available and never more than 20' feet away from either of us. An 870 tactical in a hidden compartment spring loaded stair rail with 00 buck for any wise guy that decides to come in through the front door and up the stairs. The back door is protected by a combination of the handguns and the 870 with a bonus of a Sub2K with offset red dot and 3- 30 round magazines taped together in a kitchen pantry.
If ever forced to retreat to the middle of the house- well let's just say there wont be much of the bad guy(s) or the house if I am able to make it there.
I am a firm believer in having the same handguns to carry and use at the house. I know whichever handgun I grab- it is the same exact gun. Loaded the same, kept in the same direction and manor. Reach in and they are all ready in the same way. Although there are various and sundry others in the house, if I am reaching for a SD handgun, it is a G19 Gen 4. Period.

:what: Just kidding- I have a Ruger Security Six .22 to defend the castle with.. ROFLMAO

When I'm out, I'm usually armed, but once at home I usually lock it up in the lockable compartment in the truck (garaged) and leave it there. Recently we got an SUV that the wife and I both drive and she doesn't have a carry permit so I don't want her accidentally taking out the SUV and risking a felony by having the gun locked up (but loaded) in the car with her if I happen to forget to get it out.

The obvious solution is for her to get her carry permit. I haven't quite convinced her yet but I am working on it. So in the meantime....

I'm thinking about a small wall safe in the garage or some other easily accessible area to store the firearm once I am home but I am reaching out to you all for opinions on what you do to see if anyone has a better idea.

Personally, I'd wear it on my person until I go to bed. Then I'd store it in a secure, lock up spot, until I get it in the morning and dress. I'd also have that abov mentioned lock box close to the bed so I can access said sidearm 24/7 while at home.

Although the baby grandson is just over 1 & 1/2 years old and seldom comes over here, anyplace high enough/secure enough (upstairs) where a clever child can't ever have access to it.

Very young children--we tend to believe that because we are adults, we can always outsmart them and are too careful with handguns to make a safety mistake at home. They often die because of this belief.

If I'm carrying my 442, it goes on top of the fridge in its pocket holster. If I'm carrying my P226, it goes in the nightstand. There's a pumper that lives in the bedroom. I don't have kids, and kids don't come over but a handful of times a year, and when they do, all guns go in the safe. I do have a 80lb Pit/Rott mix that loves to run full speed to an opening door.

Wheeee ! Gun Fortuna Day at Uncle Ned's house !
Sorry for your loss, but it will help to remember Gun Good Ol' Days with him.

No kids here. When I get home, my S&W 638 transitions from my pants to chest of drawers.
I feel reasonably safe at home, which I refer to as My Fortress and have several guns always available.
After reading most of this thread, I'm considering a light .22 or .32 at home, especially outside.

I have a bedside gun safe. If the gun isn't on my person or in my control, that is where it is. Holster slides off to sit on the shelf above it. I have a toddler running around so a locked firearm is a necessity. Unloaded firearms are in the larger safe in my office.
