What Does a Bad Guy Look Like?

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned is when someone is dogging your gun hand side. Have you ever been out shopping and had someone really close behind you and there’s no reason for it? Especially if they are closed in tight on your strong side?

I was talking to an retired LA Sheriffs deputy and said he turns sideways, strong/gun side away from them and asks ‘Do I know you?!’
Sometimes making a potential bad guy aware that you see him is all that’s needed to stay out of trouble.

What were the things that made you conclude you were being observed with suspicion?

I already said. Please go back and read.

Do you have any idea at all about what might have led to that?

I already said. Please go back and read.

Do you think the concern was about shoplifting, or about the possibility that you might have been an accomplice of a robber?

I don't know.

Do you think there is a possibility that their policy is to follow customers for the reason I already stated?

Or perhaps they misread the situation and thought I was pretending instead of what I already stated I actually was doing. What subtle cues should they have been looking for that they missed?

Seems like a really round about way for you to suddenly spend the effort to want to discuss.

Off topic: Who'd ever think there's sodium in ice tea? The (what I call) hidden sodium is crazy. You can get 25% of your sodium from a couple ice teas. Eat a half can of green beans and you could be close to a 100% for the day.

You said "I've been tailed by who I think was a pretend shopper/employee at Target before and I think it was because I spent an unusual amount of time looking at labels of small snacks". Does that bother you?

You said "So even though I was doing something completely innocent, the trained person thought I was up to something bad". How do you know that?.

I already said. Please go back and read.
No, you did not.

No, you did not.

Does anyone have any other things to look for when practicing situational awareness that might help the discussion?

You need to be able to pick up on the normal rhythm and flow of where you. This is pretty easy in places you normally frequent and it’s not really hard in places you aren’t familiar with. Society still has norms even in pandemic crazed 2021. Dress or conduct that is out of place should set off the alert signals in your head so that you will be more attentive. There have been some examples posted up thread but rather then try to keep a comprehensive list of “indicators” in your head, it’s better to think about what’s normal in everyday activities and what’s not and make note of them when they happen.

Everyone of us has life experiences. We just need to draw on that knowledge and automatically raise the threat level and act accordingly.

Situational awareness should be a sixth sense rather then a conscious review of a list of suspicious behaviors.

No, you did not

Yes I did and you've even quoted some.

No, you did not.

Same reply.

How about you answer my questions?

You not answering questions and only asking questions not a discussion.

You've stated you aren't going to spend the effort.

I thought that maybe you changed your mind and have a genuine discussion.

Oh well. At least I made the effort.

That's all gibberish.

You've stated you aren't going to spend the effort. I thought that maybe you changed your mind and have a genuine discussion.
I said that I di not intend to try to offer thoughts on how to distinguish between a potential criminal accomplice and someone shopping. Has the ensuing discussion not helped you with that? Do you really need that?
