What have you done in the reloading room today

Today I held reloading class 2.0 for my close friends that have taken an interest in learning. The husband/wife team & my elderly acquaintance came over during the holidays, they brought their own powder/primers/bullets. I had cleaned brass from our last shooting sessions and had them prep the once fired brass and then went through what/how each die works.

After all was said & done they walked away with their own 9mm reloads based on them shooting some of my previous Power Pistol reloads in their pistols (which shot accurately); the elderly friend walked away with 9mm loads to ladder test using his TiteGroup powder.

Today they loaded another 250+ 9mm loads and the elderly friend brought his brass to clean in the tumbler, plus I did some troubleshooting with him on his press set up so now he has a direction to follow.

They are all deriving great satisfaction from the attention to detail it takes to 'roll' their own, plus their 9mm ammo storage box is getting fuller/heavier 😍

Their next step is to check on a local progressive dillon that's for sale here locally; today they came with many more questions after the first session which we discussed in detail, then they all got busy 😎

sorry, I dont wet tumble...... JmacD will have to be our resident Ultra Shiny Brass guy...
Someone call me? IMG_3289.jpeg IMG_3288.jpeg
I do like shiny brass and clean primer pockets! Chrome may not get you home, but, if everything else is done right, it gives much more “presence” when ya get there. lol IMG_3276.jpeg
Added these to the shelf as well as 100 starline 45 auto brass. Did some organizing in the reloading room and on the bench(es). Put a “strap button” on a guitar on the bench. Have a load of odds and ends in the wet tumbler.

You’re going to chamfer all those cases, right?

First, they get sorted by headstamp
Edit: it’s another way I can keep what gun it’s for straight. My 365 will run the hot stuff I run in my full size, but it’s entirely to dramatic to shoot to much. lol.

So I ordered a fair bit of stuff to try making a small Pi Tablet thing for my reloading bench. I ordered a 5.5in 1080p touchscreen so we'll see how it all works out. Ill update y'all once I get the parts in and test it out and see how it works and how I'm going to mount it to my bench/shelves.
P.s. my dad teaches this type of thing at the high school he's a teacher at so I have a good mentor. I would not be trying this by myself. I'll be sure to take detailed notes on how we set it up. Gonna try using some type of open source SQL Database Inventory Software also.

Decided to try to get the 500 sized and flared pieces of new Starline 45 Auto brass primed also. Gonna be fun playing musical cups while I get them cleared out of the coffee can...

Using the Fed 155s. After this is all primed I'll start running up some loads with the old Winchester primed brass to runn them out. Need more bullets....... Sigh.... Will look into that this evening.

I shot my ladders for the .38Spl 110gr Winchester Kinetic HE.
Used these:
IMG_2276.jpeg
1960’s Colt Cobra, Taurus 82, Taurus 85
IMG_2274.jpeg
T/C G1 wearing the .357 10” barrel
IMG_2273.jpeg
More barrels:
L-R - .22LR, .357, .22Hornet, .30-30, .44

They live in here..
IMG_2272.jpeg
IMG_2271.jpeg

Frame and hand guards.
There’s three more in the safe: .22RemJet 10” w/ a Swift scope, Super 14 .35Rem, and a Super 16 .223.

It’s going to take a while to finalize everything, including a night shoot for the flash test, but right now W244 and Ramshot Silhouette are the top contenders (pun intended) both at the mid-range loading. I didn’t even get past the starting load with W231. Way too much flash. WST didn’t meet velocity until the maximum load so it’s out of the running too. Autocomp I’m going to try again because the battery died on my Chrony and the “spare” was toast. Autocomp shot nicely though so if it makes velocity it’s still in the running.

Deprimed the .300 Blacky brass from my short range trip.

8.2gr of N110 and the Berry's 220 SP cycled the gun, but didn't lock the bolt back, at 890fps. Everything cycled and locked the bolt back after that. I ended at 9.0gr at 990fps, and was pretty darn quiet and CLEAN! Very happy with how clean it was, especially after the SUPER dirty factory subs. Accuracy is about as good as I can do with a red dot for all charge weights. I'm shooting for somewhere between 1020-1050fps, and am guessing somewhere around 9.4-9.6gr is going to do that. I have enough brass prepped to work up to 10.0gr by .2gr increments, so that's what I'm going to do!

Later this evening when I sat down at the bench, I opened and played with what my wife got me for my birthday.... a bunch of stuff from Lee so now I can set my Pro 6000 up for .223, a long with one of their new "stepped" 9mm powder through expanders. I'm like a kid in a candy store!

I would keep it right at 9gr but maybe a bit more powder will give you a better group?? Dad and I are happy if the subs cycle perfectly fine.

Loaded up two 38-44 tests with the rcbs 358-180-sil. 9.0-9.8 #9 and 8.0-8.8 grains blue dot...
Winchester cases cci 550s seated to 1.555 oal. as things normally work I'd run the blue dot test before and 8.6 was the load... here's to verification 🤣 20240106_190627.jpg

I stumbled onto autocomp when I couldn’t find anything else. It’s rapidly becoming my favorite 9mm powder!
Yup. The only negative is it’s a little blasty and gassy for a snubby .38Spl. It’s like my Great Uncle James. 🤣😳💨

I finished up last night by dumping the rest of my brass out of the wet tumbler. This was 6 Norma 308 brass, a couple of 10mm and some random 40 short and weak, and some 45 auto. Also threw one 32 auto case in there, 1 38 special, 1 45 colt, and… I think that’s it. It was a true mixed bag. I so far haven’t had trouble with brass all sticking together like dry tumbling, though I’m sure it can(and has) happen(ed). Started sorting the 9mm pile. IMG_3293.jpeg Found some I’m not sure I’ll load. Looks to have been loaded by the same reckless daredevil who’s brass I’ve found before. When the rim grows so it won’t go in a shell holder… ya…
Also got 50 starline 308 brass ready to prime, the bottle of benchmark off the shelf, and the new box of 110 Vmax ready to go. Still debating BR2 or WLR primers. Dug through all my manuals, and ran my load through GRT: IMG_3295.jpeg
I reckon it’ll probably work: until I cough up the cash for some N135. FYI, Hodgdon gives data for a 110 all the way up to a 52.? gr Compressed load.

Here’s a reason for clean brass inside and out…No, it’s actually not, but I thought of these posts as I observed this effect loading some 45acp.

Due to angle and my height, I cannot actually see inside a case when loading something like 4.5gr But I can see a reflection of the powder so I know a case is loaded. Picture doesn’t show it well.

If you’re concerned I may use this technique during actual loading—NO, I don’:)

I can definitely see that. With its gassy reputation, I’m surprised at the total lack of muzzle flash I had running it in a night class. I took some other for back up just in case, but I had nothing. One lady had some stuff for her 38spec her dad had loaded. WOW. I don’t recall the recipe, but her hubby was apologizing to her all over the place for not getting “her” loads done for her. LOUD and Flashy. Kinda like my great aunt R. 🤣🤣

Added these to the shelf

I'm curious to see what you think of those. I bought a tray for my 5.56mm test ladders, my initial load with them was actually opposite of what I expected... that is, greater SD. I'mma scratching my head over that one, but I'm still working on it.

That's one of the reasons I don't really like W231, and why I don't use it.

Yes, you will have to max the WST load, but that max load gives you a target-level velocity. WST is, after all, a very fast powder... faster than TiteGroup and W231, even.

Sized and prepped about 400 6.5ManBun cases. Turning that hand crank on the old Pacific trimmer is much easier with 6.5 brass than .30 brass... but I still got a blister.

Reminds me of my father’s snubby (my grips). He got it as a gift from his “squad“ in the 70s on his 20th or 25th anniversary.

I don’t load for it nor shoot it for that matter. It’s not my cup of tea. And without those Pachmyra (sp?) grips it’s tough to hold on to for me.

That's 200 dollars worth of just bullets now 🤯. I wonder if your speer availability is better than mine. I've been picking up 30 cal 150s and 165s at 30 a box, cheapest thing going. No 6.5s on the shelf since I moved here.

I need to go bullet shopping. I need a box of 142grn SMK's, and something nice for hunting deer.

Midway has the 100ct box of SMK's on sale, for less than the 500ct box, each. But... dang... those Nosler bonded bullets are 'spensive.

Tumbling. .38Spl brass from yesterday. Plain corn cob, then decap, then treated walnut, resize and into the bin with the rest of the prepped WIN head stamp .38Spl brass.
