1) The bank heist from "Heat".

2) The apartment building shoot out in "The Kingdom"

3) "Collateral": the nightclub shoot out

4) "Blackhawk Down": from the time the assault begins until the return to the stadium.

I would say the "Heat" bank robbery is probably the best shootout in any movie, especially in terms of realism. It shows you don't need special effects for a great shootout scene.

the best ones are the old country movies and i like the one in Smokin aces i love the one with billy the kid and he blaste the guy right in the head from atop a horse

Still haven't seen a better shot than a guy tumbling off his horse after a long range, delayed action, pistol shot in Magnificent Seven. Also one of the best gun fight movies, along with Peckinpaws' Wild Bunch. And then there was Zulu.

I have seen some good ones here, Heat, Open Range, and Zulu. But my absolute best one to date is the sceene in Hell is for Heros where Steve Mcqueen is in the trench with the M-3 and pitches the WP into the brush and starts lighting up the Germans.

I like the ones in "The Getaway" (original with Steve McQueen). The gunfight in the seedy motel, the street scene with the pump shotgun, and the "duel" with the other bank robber all seemed realistic to me.

Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones (I can’t remember which movie) where he shoots the sword wielding bad guy. It actually makes sense. Why get into a fight with a guy holding a sword when you have a gun at your side?

I didn't like Open Range much as a movie... but yeah, that fight scene at the end woke me up real fast.

Lot of other great movies mentioned... +1 to Way of the Gun, Heat, Saving Private Ryan, etc. I take every opportunity I can to praise Way of the Gun, as I really feel that the movie got the short end of the stick in terms of publicity. I didn't find the movie until years after it was out... in a Wal-Mart bargain bin, no less.

Did anyone see the new-ish Miami Vice movie that came out a couple years ago? That one had a really great gun battle at the end. It was like watching the most awesome episode of COPS ever. Loud as hell, horrible lighting, pretty well thought-out action. I bought the movie just for that scene.

Has anyone mentioned Ronin? Another good gun movie.

The Steve McQueen version of "The Getaway". The gunfight in the hotel.

Pretty much anything in "Last Man Standing".

The liberation of the camp in "The Great Raid".

The attack on the evil oyabun's mansion in "The Yakuza". Robert Mitchum with his M1911 and sawed off double and Takakura Ken with his katana make for one of the best fight scenes (not with each other) in movie history. This movie is not that well known these days, but it's one of my absolute favorites. The Schrader brothers made the absolute best Japanese gangster movie, EVER.

Pretty much anything in "Prime Cut" with Lee Marvin and Gene Hackman. Marvin has a Browning Highpower and an S&W M76 SMG.

Another obscure one, "99 44/100ths % Dead", which is a great B-movie from the '70s. Harris has twin BHPs, against Chuck Connors with a prosthesis on the end of his arm that accepts attachments, including a MAC-10.

The fight at sea at the end of "Lucky Lady" with Burt Reynolds. M1917 Enfields, Lewis Guns, Mauser Broomhandles, Thompsons, etc.

Tombstone
My all time favorite Western, along with "The Outlaw Josey Wales" and "Big Jake", all of which have great gunfights. The Kevin Costner Wyatt Earp movie was dreadful.

BTW, the gunfights in "The Untouchables" are great, especially at the Canadian border and in the train station.

"Why Johnny Ringo, you look like somebody just walked over your grave."

and

"You're no daisy. You're no daisy at all!"

ha ha, fantastic scene

Most parts (especially the first 30 mins) of Saving Private Ryan, with a big screen and the surround sound cranked way up, hearing bullets and shells sailing over your head. Although that's more of a war scene than a gun battle scene I 'spose.

Yah i get knocks on my door from the neighbors from time to time with I am watching this movie. Or playing MOH on the PS2 (Yah I know the PS 2 is old news).

Several stand out...

Way of the Gun - final shootout

Heat - Bank Heist, among other scenes

Ronin - Several great scenes in that on

Tears of the sun - The scene where the team rescues the villagers

The Patriot - Scene where he rescues his son from the Brits with the help of his younger sons

The Professional - Final shootout

+1 for Heat and Collateral. Michael Mann movies exude great gunplay.

A Michael Mann movie I'd really recommend is Thief. The end gunscene has to be my #1 favorite of all time (plus, it's one of the first movies I watched with my Dad when I was a kid...when my Mom was at work).

Got a few more:

The teahouse and hospital shootout scenes in "Hard Boiled".

The nightclub and a few other shootout scenes in "The Killer". (Kind of surprised noone ever mentioned any John Woo movies...I know they're over-the-top, and somewhat unrealistic, but they're pretty entertaining).

What qualifies as a "gun battle"? Because personally, the gun battles in Indiana Jones 1 and 3 were/are my favorites, in part due to how they fit so seamlessly into the films. Not entirely realistic, for the most part, but certain things are likely as they'd take place in real life (at least in microcosm).

Indy 1:
- The ever-famous sword slayer slaying
- The 'intro' gun fight in Marion's bar
- The

Indy 3:
- "I told you, don't call me Junior!"
- The 'straffing fighter downed by birds' scene

I see a gun as not the end-all, be-all, and but a tool, secondary to the mind. Shoot-'em-up scenes can be entertaining as all getout, but that isn't entirely what makes the scenes entertaining: it's the one-upsmanship of the good guy over the bad guy using superior skills and utilization of weaponry.

The sniper battles in the second half of in Enemy at the Gates were awesome.

Also, Heat and Ronin had some awesome gun battle scenes.

ETA: Oh man, can't believe I forgot The Professional! Awesome gun scenes at the end. If you rent it, make certain you get the "director's cut" version: it's not only a good action film then, but an awesome piece of cinematographic storytelling.

Aliens: Med-lab scene right through to the airshaft fight – great action and music.

True Grit: not just for the 'swinging the Winchester around with one had to cock it' but also for the excellent dialogue before Wayne says his immortal line – “Fill your hands you son-of-a –bitch!”
