Thanks Cosmoline. That was one i was going to mention. My favorite western, well tied with Lonesom Dove i guess.

Also the gunfights in Bonnie & Clyde. The one where they slept in the woods after Buck was shot in the head. They were surrounded by farmers and local cops.

So many great shootouts, it's impossible to pick just one. But since I watched Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven a few nights ago, I'll offer the scene where Will Munny guns down Little Bill's crew with one of the greatest lines delivered shortly thereafter:

Will Munny said:
All right, I’m coming out. Any man I see out there, I’m gonna shoot him. Any sumbitch takes a shot at me, I’m not only gonna kill him, but I’m gonna kill his wife, all his friends, and burn his damn house down. “

And who can forget one of the all time greats, John Wayne in True Grit:

Rooster Cogburn said:
Rooster confronts four outlaws across a field
Ned Pepper: What's your intention? Do you think one on four is a dogfall?
Rooster Cogburn: I mean to kill you in one minute, Ned. Or see you hanged in Fort Smith at Judge Parker's convenience. Which'll it be?
Ned Pepper: I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man.
Rooster Cogburn: Fill your hands, you son of a bitch.

Yeah, there are new movies with much better production values and greater dramatic impact but I for one will never forget when that "one-eyed fat man" put the reins in his teeth and took off across that clearing, revolver in one hand and rifle in the other. Of course, in the end he was saved by a woman but let's don't go there.

The Rough Riders with Sam Elliot as a Captain, I can't remember who played LTC. Roosevelt. They spent a lot of money making sure the weapons were correct, right down to the Model 1895 Colt machine guns. Was made for TV!!!!!!, and written up very well in Guns and Ammo mag.

Final street battle scene in "Saving Private Ryan" all the way from the scripture quoting sniper in the bell tower through the mobile German 20mm clearing their own tank, to Tom Hanks popping his 1911 toward the Tiger (?) tank.

And, of course, the most beautiful sound in the world, the Rolls Royce Merlins streaming overhead, busting the tank.

Born on the 4th of July - Bad movie but I really like the scene where Ron Kovic gets shot through the foot but then struggles to get back up into a kneeling position to return fire.

I really like the part in the original pilot, Serenity, when Mal shoots the Alliance agent. It's not the kind of thing you expect to see in a TV/movie shootout. There's no "stop or I'll shoot," no warning whatsoever. Mal shoots him in the head without batting an eyelash or breaking stride.

How about the one in the episode titled "War Stories" where they have to rescue Mal from Niska? I thought that one was pretty cool since we got to see most of the crew in action.

Tom Berenger, believe it or not. He's an amazingly good actor and is rarely given the chance to show it. Unfortunately he also vanishes in his role, he's so good at it. That's an excellent film, arguably Milius' finest work. Get the DVD if you haven't yet.

Another excellent one I like to plug is "The Lighthorsemen."

One of the most realistic war / gun movies I have seen was a movie made by A&E called the Lost Battalion. It is set in WWI in the Argonne Forrest. Very realistic, very bloody, and some damn fine acting with a good story. I have seen that it was a remake of an older movie made in 1919 featuring the actual survivors.

Another vote for Open Range and Heat. Open Range just sounds awesome with a decent stereo. The gun shots are like thunder.

Honorable mention to Christian Bale in Equilibrium (the method for clearing a room was pretty cool, although unrealistic) and the lobby shootout scene from the Matrix.

1.Heat-1995
2.Shane-1953
3.High Noon-1952
4.Where Eagles Dare-1968
5.The Public Enemy-1931
6.The Godfather-1972
7.A Fistful of Dollars-1964
8.Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid-1969
9.White Heat-1949
10.The Killers-1946
11.Bonnie and Clyde-1967
12.The Big Red One-1980

Mission Impossible 3, on the bridge when the weapons traders are trying to get their leader back. I also enjoy the part in I Robot when Will Smith is fighting off the robots in Vikis control room. He never reloads the SMG that whole scene. Actualy, I don't think anyone in that movie ever reloaded the whole time...

Riaders of the Lost Ark: When the guard with the Saracen sword parts the crowd and does his flashy BS and Indy casually plugs him and walks off.

Classic.

I especially like River's eyes-closed shooting at the end of that episode. I like the way it kind of freaks Kaylee out.

Open Range did have a fantastic gunfight.

And if anyone has seen Breaker-Morant, when they are being held in custody and the compound is attacked by Boers, they grab Lee-Enfields and I think a machine gun and proceed to waste the Boer raiding party. I remember having to force myself to exhale after that one. Very highly recommended movie to those who haven't seen it.
