For a while, cars were being broken into frequently where I work.

I'm not comfortable keeping a gun in my vehicle. It would have to be in some kind of lockbox, and maybe not even then.

The other problem is that if it's some kind of concealed lockbox, it's doubtful that I would be able to access it in time if I needed it.

In Texas you do not need a permit to carry a firearm in your vehicle although I do have one. I'm an old dude and put about only 4-5k miles a year on my car and keep a Bersa .380 in my car just in case I forget my EDC. The parking area where I work is secured and monitored and, as I control all the CC cameras garage doors for the facility, I keep a camera on the section of the area where I usually park and have that constant on one of my monitors. The only other places I go usually have parking up front for senior citizens so I don't worry to much about my car being broken into. Park it in the garage when I'm home. I usually take my wife's SUV if we go out of town but then I've got my EDC with me. Never saw a need for a long gun in the trunk unless I was going hunting or to the range.

but otherwise why would anyone want a gun that couldn't be accessed without stopping the vehicle, exiting, and unlocking the trunk?

Because it only takes a few moments to get it in case of need. Beats having it at home locked in a safe when you need it on the road. Not every situation would require a quick draw, sometimes you do have a few minutes to sort things out. (And no, I don't have to get out to get to mine, a passenger could retrieve it while moving if the case arose.)

Having something in the trunk doesn't mean I don't have my everyday carry handgun on me.

Having something in the trunk makes spur of the moment shooting trips a snap

This 4 gun approach became my norm after the riots of a couple years ago along with a 'get-me-home' bag in the car. .

I like the get-me-home bag idea.
Depending on where my travels take me, for me it is a Kel-Tec Sub2K with a red dot. Easy to hide and secure in my truck and can be accessed very quickly. I very rarely leave it in the truck and take it back in the house with me. At that time I was way too close to the LA riots and Reginald Denny for my comfort. If I am away from my truck and SHTF, I can use my handgun to fight my way to the rifle. The beauty of it is it takes Glock mags so there are always several spares close by. Although small and compact, it is sometimes a burden to have the "extra baggage" but what is your families life worth? Mine can't be replaced and I won't take that chance.
Just my $0.02

Whatever I am carrying is my "trunk gun". If I am heading out into the country (aka "woods"), I may pack a 22 rifle along with a handgun or two.

I suspect majority of criminals have guns because at one time they were owned by law abiding citizens. Given that leaving gun permanently in a vehicle is real bad idea.

Over a year ago I purchased a SAR 4.5" 16+1 polymer-framed, SA/DA B6P. I wanted a cheap gun to keep in my car. I normally pocket carry a Rohrbaugh R9 and I can't really deploy it from a sitting position. I wanted a gun that I could access quickly while in my vehicle. Since I wouldn't be carrying it, weight and size weren't much of a factor so I wanted a full-sized pistol. Almost everything else I have is 9mm (besides .22LR), so I wanted to stick with 9mm. I also wanted something really cheap and not something that I would worry about exposing to the heat, humidity and freezing temperatures of sitting in my car.

I just used Internet search tools like Gun Watcher and SlickGuns to price sort all 9mm from low to high. At the bottom of the price range are derringers, then Hi-Points, then the Century Arms Zastava M88 / Yugo M70, then there was the SCCY, Kel-Tec and Diamondback DB9 all coming in at around $200.00, then there are the Taurus, and then there is the Sarsilmaz offerings – imported by EAA.

I purchased the pistol for a total of $241.43 from Sportsman Guide. Sportsman's Guide really plays around with prices and different numbers. They advertised a price of $237.49 but that is with membership to their buyer's club which is $29.99 per year and the regular price is $249.99 plus $9.99 shipping but then I received an offer to join the buyers club for 6 months free and as part of that they would waive shipping fees but then they add a $9.99 fee for firearms period – so when you are dealing with Sportsman Guide you really have to get out your calculator and start adding and subtracting all of their different prices, deals, discounts, offers, fees and everything to see if the gun really is a good deal or not. When all the adding and subtracting was done, I ended up spending $241.43 for the B6P I purchased the 19rd Mec-Gar CZ 75B magazine for the gun and so its loaded with 20 rounds of Winchester 147gr Ranger "T" Series - RA9T.

Its gone an entire year sitting in my car, from baking in my car sitting out in a 94° parking lot to freezing in 7° winter weather, the gun hasn't gotten a spot of rust on it and not a single malfunction every time I've gone to the range.

Its not really a trunk gun though, it sits in a Gum Creek holster right by my right knee.

I did put together a GHB, and once again I wanted a cheap pistol for it. I purchased a Taurus Millennium G2 PT111. I didn't want to spend a lot of money for something that was basically just going to sit in a bag most of the time. I wanted something really cheap and not something that I would worry about exposing to the heat, humidity and freezing temperatures of sitting in the trunk of my car, which is where the GHB would be (mostly)

I had noticed the Taurus Millennium G2 PT111 going for super-cheap prices like $199.99 and I'd read good things about them here on the High Road from owners. When they went on sale at Whittaker Guns for 184.99 + 12.99 S&H, it was super cheap so I just had to get one. I did purchase a 20 round Mec-Gar magazine for it, and a few spare that I keep loaded and stored in the GHB. It has 21 rounds of he RA9T loaded in it.

The gun is just OK... I haven't had any malfunctions so I can't really complain. For all of the scenarios that I can envision having to pull my gun out of my GHB - I'm sure the Taurus will be up to the task. I'm not going to complain about the trigger or the fit and finish on a sub $200.00 gun that I choose mainly because it was so cheap.

That must have been in or near downtown?
My cars suffered two break-ins at Shelby Farms, over a twenty year time span . Daylight both times. But I've been there over 200 times for running.
One squarish black leather bag --with navig. charts-- might have resembled what some pharm. reps carry at nearby Baptist East (or jewelry samples). My mistake was leaving it visible in the back seat.

On the second break-in at a main trail head south of Walnut Grove (east of the fishing shack), nothing was visible. Almost no traffic was passing on a foggy New Years Day that time. After that I hid a wallet in a small camo cloth behind a remote tree etc.
Both of these happened years before my real interest in guns developed, especially with handguns.

What makes a good trunk/truck gun?
Cheap
un-papered

Cheap in case its damaged, lost, stolen, or confiscated
un-papered in case the need arises to loose it

For me, its not worth the trouble to keep a gun in the vehicle. Too much danger of it being stolen.

S&W 19-4 in a holster under the driver's seat. The worn blue finish on this old sweet gun makes it's blue book value much less than I would let it go for, so it makes a great truck gun (no trunk, always close.)

Been quite a while since I owned a vehicle with a trunk, with that said I feel any gun in the trunk is too far away.
XD40 in the console, short 12 ga single under the back seat.

I like the get-me-home bag idea.

Just my $0.02

Mine is a SUB2K as well. It lives in an old battered-but-still-secure, locking Zero Halliburton aluminum brief case, along with a GLOCK17 with holster, mags, mag holders and ammo. It's secured with a good quality bicycle cable, and painted flat black, and is usually covered from direct view.

When required by travel, the mags and ammo are in a dopp kit, so I can pull them out and store them separately.

I usually EDC a 1911, transferring it to a holster mounted in my center console on longer rides, so the kit serves as a JIC, as well as an impromptu range toy.

If I have to pull it out for service or to loan the car, it's pretty inconspicuous, though if someone were to pick it up, the weight is noticeable.
